The Pyxine pungens complex comprises species producing atranorin in the upper cortex, lacking vegetative propagules and reacting K blackish purple in the pigmented medulla. Based mainly on the development of apothecia, pigmentation and development of the internal stipe and chemistry, three new species morphologically similar to P. pungens are described. Pyxine rhodesiaca and P. schechingeri are also treated and compared to this complex of species.
