The Bryologist is an international journal devoted to all aspects of bryology and lichenology, and we welcome reviews, research papers and short communications from all members of American Bryological and Lichenological Society (ABLS). We also publish lists of current literature, book reviews and news items about members and event. All back issues of the journal are maintained electronically. The first issue of The Bryologist was published in 1898, with the formation of the Society.

All submissions to the journal are subject to at least two peer reviews, and both the reviews and the identities of reviewers are treated confidentially. Reviewers are asked to acknowledge possible conflicts of interest and to provide strictly objective assessments of the suitability and scholarly merit of the submissions under review. 

Submissions must present new experimental results clearly and precisely. Papers may be rejected without review if they are deemed to lack scientific quality or relevance to the study of bryophyte or lichen biology. Manuscripts may also be rejected based on prior publication of substantial portions of text, data or conclusions, including those published in a language other than English or through electronic media such as websites.

Before submissions are formally accepted for publication, corresponding authors will be asked to sign an Assignment of Copyright form, which will transfer copyright of the published work to the American Bryological and Lichenological Society.

Publishers and editors will take reasonable steps to identify and prevent the publication of papers where research misconduct has occurred. In the event that a journal’s publisher or editors are made aware of any allegation of research misconduct, the publisher or editor shall deal with allegations appropriately. Publishers and editors are always willing to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies when needed.
