Abstract

Physalis carpenteri (Solanaceae) is placed in a new, monotypic genus: Calliphysalis. Recognition of this taxon at the generic level is supported by molecular, phylogenetic, morphological, and chromosomal data. This nomenclatural change emphasizes the uniqueness of this southeastern US endemic, and helps to make Physalis s.s. monophyletic. A discussion of the distribution, ecology, morphology, and nomenclatural history of the species follows.
