Abstract

The poorly known family Barbutiidae is one of the most mysterious groups in the Prostigmata. We review the family at the world level, synonymize the genus Namibarbutia with Molothrognathus of the family Caligonellidae, describe the first Australian representatives of the family, Barbutia australia sp. nov. and B. longinqua sp. nov., provide diagnostic characters, habitats and distributions for each of the four known species, and give a key to all species.
