Littoral species of Cercyon Leach occurring on coastlines of the West Coast of North America from Alaska to Mexico are reviewed based on material freshly collected in Washington State (USA) and British Columbia (Canada) and on museum specimens including primary types. Five species are recognized, including two that are distributed on both American and Eurasian sides of the Pacific Ocean and three that exist only on the American West Coast. The eastern Palearctic Cercyon dux Sharp is recorded in North America for the first time, with all known specimens collected after 2014. The synonymy of the western Nearctic Cercyon tolfino Hatch with the eastern Palearctic Cercyon setulosus Sharp is confirmed. The previous concept of Cercyon fimbriatus Mannerheim, the most common and widespread species, is confirmed. Cercyon spathifer Smetana is placed in junior synonymy with Cercyon luniger Mannerheim, and the species previously treated as C. luniger is an unnamed species, described herein as Cercyon whuljensis Suzumura, new species. Redescriptions of all five species are given along with SEM photographs, illustrations, and maps based on examined material and literature data, and a key to species is provided.

Crepidodera haydenae Clark and Veal, new species, is described and illustrated. So far, this species is known only from Hayden Prairie in Iowa, USA. The adult host is probably prairie willow, Salix humilis Marsh.

Egg hatch and the first instar of Semijulistus spectabilis (Lewis) are described in detail for the first time, and their growth process is compared with that of the melyrid lineage. Diversification of the ontogenic development of the melyrid lineage is discussed.

An updated checklist of the Dermestidae for mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands is produced. A total of 102 species was found from existing lists and world catalogues, but no supporting scientific literature could be found for 26 of these species. Consequently, the proposal here is that the checklist of Dermestidae for Spain should number 76. A consideration of the types of species that should constitute a national checklist and how species appear on a checklist without scientific support is made.

New distribution records for the genus Ora Clark, 1865 in the USA and Mesoamerica are given, with notes on variations in markings in Ora discoidea Champion, 1897. New country records are provided for Ora depressa (Fabricius, 1801) (Mexico) and O. discoidea (USA). A key is provided for identification of the Ora species known from the USA.

A new species of Bolbochromus Boucomont, 1909, Bolbochromus tricostatus Selking, new species, is described from Mindanao, Philippines. The new species is illustrated and compared to similar congeneric species.

Onthophagus howdeni Zunino and Halffter was originally described from two male specimens collected in Oaxaca, Mexico. Thirty years later, this species is collected again in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, the previously unknown female is described, and information about its biology is given. Onthophagus zapotecus Zunino and Halffter was originally described based on three specimens. A redescription of this species is based on newly collected specimens. New data are provided on the distribution of Onthophagus howdenorum Zunino and Halffter, Onthophagus oaxacanus Zunino and Halffter, Onthophagus aureofuscus Bates, and O. zapotecus. The International Union of Conservation of Nature's status of O. aureofuscus and Onthophagus undulans Bates are examined. The affinities with other species of the species- group are discussed, and information about their biology and capture method is presented. An identification key is given, in English and Spanish, for the species of Onthophagus Latreille recorded in Sierra Norte and Sierra Sur of Oaxaca.

Two species of flightless Cymatodera Gray are described from the California Channel Islands: Cymatodera insularis Rifkind, new species, from Santa Catalina Island and San Clemente Island; and Cymatodera caterinoi Rifkind and Burke, new species, from Santa Rosa Island, Santa Cruz Island, and Anacapa Island. The new species are compared with Cymatodera vandykei Schaeffer and Cymatodera angustata Spinola, similar flightless species from the California mainland. The origins of Channel Island insect endemism are briefly discussed.

The primary types of beetles (Coleoptera) in the C. A. Triplehorn Insect Collection at The Ohio State University are catalogued. Data on original combinations, current combinations, and type locality are verified and presented. A brief history of the collection is recounted. There are 200 primary types (172 holotypes, seven neotypes, one lectotype, 20 syntypes) from 28 families and eight countries in the collection. A total of 24 specimens labeled by others as primary types were confirmed as manuscript names and are presented in a separate list. The primary type of Luperaltica nitida Wilcox is presumed to be lost. The presumed holotype of Edrotes fossor Triplehorn was previously erroneously labeled, and a lectotype is designated from the paratype series.

The genus Lithocharodes was described by David Sharp in 1876 for a single species, Lithocharodes fuscipennis Sharp, from the Amazon, Brazil. For over 130 years, the species has been mentioned only in catalogs. However, recent fieldwork found it in localities ranging from northern to southern Brazil. Lithocharodes fuscipennis differs from the other species of the genus mainly by the dark brown to black elytra with the apical quarter conspicuously lighter except on the elytral suture. The male genitalia of L. fuscipennis are illustrated, sexual dimorphism is described, and remarks on the genus, including a diagnosis, are presented.

A flea beetle, Distigmoptera borealisBlake, 1943, is documented for the first time to feed on liverworts, Reboulia hemisphaerica (L.) Raddi (Aytoniaceae), and moss, Weissia controversa Hedw. (Pottiaceae). This is the first and only known bryobiont leaf beetle in the USA and Nearctic biogeographic region. The adult of D. borealis is redescribed and illustrated, and the larva and pupa of D. borealis are described and illustrated for the first time.

The three instars of Hydrocanthus sharpi Zimmermann, 1928 are described and illustrated, including morphometric and chaetotaxic analyses of the cephalic capsule, head appendages, legs, last abdominal segment, and urogomphus. Larvae of Hydrocanthus Say, 1823 are diagnosed by the following combination of characters: elongate body; posterior tentorial pits not contiguous to occipital foramen; antennomere 4 2–3 times shorter than antennomere 3; non-serrate inner mandibular margin; siphon short, slightly protruding; urogomphi not fused along inner margin. Hydrocanthus differs in chaetotaxy from Suphis Aubé, 1836 by the position of frontoclypeal seta FR10, antennal seta AN3, and maxillary sensilla MX11 and MXj, the presence of several additional setae on the trochanter, the absence of seta MX16 on the maxilla, of seta AB2 on abdominal segment VIII, and of pore MXd on the galea, the length of labial seta LA2 and of urogomphal seta UR4, and the shape of tarsal setae TA3, TA4, TA5, and TA6.

Three new species are described in the Desmopachria striola species-group in the Neoptropical genus Desmopachria Babington: D. atropos Miller and Wolfe, new species (Venezuela), D. clotho Miller and Wolfe, new species (Suriname), and D. lachesis Miller and Wolfe, new species (Guyana). The male genitalia of all species in the D. striola species-group are illustrated except that of D. ferrugata Régimbart. The aedeagi of the new species are illustrated from specimens, whereas those of previously described species are redrawn from published illustrations.

The Australian genus Pediomorphus Chaudoir, 1878 is reviewed and eight new species are described: Pediomorphus maximus Will, new species and Pediomorphus crenulatus Will, new species from New South Wales; Pediomorphus minor Will, new species from South Australia; Pediomorphus punctatus Will, new species from Northern Territory; Pediomorphus storeyi Will, new species from Queensland; Pediomorphus semilaevis Will, new species from Northern Territory and Queensland; Pediomorphus robustus Will, new species from Queensland and Western Australia; and Pediomorphus obtusus Will, new species from Queensland, Northern Territory, and Western Australia. A key to the 13 species of the genus is provided.

We present a study on the carrion beetles of the families Scarabaeidae, Silphidae, and Trogidae from the areas surrounding Villa Juárez, Asientos, Aguascalientes, Mexico. Four sites with three types of habitat were selected: agricultural land; riparian forest; and xerophytic scrub 1 and xerophytic scrub 2. We used NTP-80 carrion traps from October 2016 to September 2017. In total, 4,831 specimens belonging to nine species, five genera, and three families were captured. The family with the highest species richness was Silphidae (s = 4), followed by Scarabaeidae (s = 3) and Trogidae (s = 2). The most abundant family was Scarabaeidae, followed by Silphidae and Trogidae. The most abundant species were: Onthophagus knulliHowden and Cartwright, 1963 (Scarabaeidae) and Nicrophorus mexicanus Matthews, 1888 (Silphidae); those with the lowest abundance were Copris sierrensisMatthews, 1961 (Scarabaeidae) and Trox spinulosus dentibius Robinson, 1940 (Trogidae), with only one individual each. The rank-abundance curves exhibit a pattern in which O. knulli was dominant with more than 70% of total abundance in each of the three sites where it was collected. Onthophagus knulli was not found in agricultural land, thus a greater similarity in species abundance was observed. We present an annotated checklist of the species found. Species richness was lower than other studies in Mexico which can be attributed to the semi-arid region and the high degree of habitat fragmentation in the area. We provide a foundation for future ecological, biogeographical, conservation, and forensic studies. Captures of O. knulli, C. sierrensis, T. spinulosus dentibius, and Nicrophorus olidus Matthews, 1886 are new state records for Aguascalientes.

Most distributional lists are limited to geographical areas such as states or provinces and often include information regarding smaller subsets of coprophagous insects. This checklist of Coleoptera (Geotrupidae, Histeridae, Hydrophilidae, Scarabaeidae, Staphylinidae, and Trogidae) associated with livestock dung on pastures in Canada and the USA builds on the data previously compiled by R. R. Blume in 1985 and adds several improvements to make it more robust and applicable to a modern audience. These improvements include information regarding only coprophagous species, their current distributional records in North America, different types of primarily livestock dung they are attracted to, and taxonomic changes. For added convenience, a Microsoft Excel^® file has been created to permit the reader to generate a specific checklist of coprophilous beetles for any state or province in America north of Mexico or dung type of interest.

Verodes chimalapensis Delgado and Mora-Aguilar, new species, from the cloud forest of the region of Chimalapas, Oaxaca, Mexico is described and illustrated. The new species is compared with other species of the genus, and modifications to a key by Foley and Ivie for the genus are provided to include the new species. Comments on the distribution of Verodes asperatus (Champion), Verodes carinatus (Champion), Verodes exsculptus (Champion), Verodes impresus (Champion), Verodes inaequalis (Say), Verodes interruptus (Champion), and Verodes scabrosus (Solier) are included.

Dung beetles are insects involved in the organic matter cycle, providing services in ecosystem functions through their feeding and reproductive behavior. Environmental degradation of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil causes a decrease in species richness, which may affect ecosystem processes. However, many of the characteristics related to the ecological functions of dung beetle species remains unknown. Our study aimed to describe the ecological characteristics of dung beetle species that inhabit the natural forest environments of Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. We used databases from research conducted from 2007 through 2014 coupled with standardized sampling methods to capture copro-necrophagous Scarabaeinae in 103 native Atlantic forest areas in 20 locations in the state of Santa Catarina. The 98 species collected, representing six tribes and 20 genera, were identified, photographed to scale and categorized according to their feeding habit, resource allocation behavior, diel activity, relative abundance, body size, and distribution range in the state. Most of the species were of small size (n = 54) and tunnelers (n = 47), and almost half of the species (n = 42) were found only in one site, while 85 species were considered rare in relative abundance. In addition to contributing to the knowledge of dung beetle ecology in Brazil's Atlantic Forest, this study shows the species distribution in the region and highlights the importance of remaining forest fragments in the maintenance of biodiversity and the ecosystem functions carried out by these beetles.

The genus Labomimus Sharp contains 43 species in Asia and is represented in the Himalayan region by two species from Xizang, China. In this paper, the first species of Labomimus from Nepal, Labomimus flammicornis Yin and Zhang, new species, is described and compared to related congeners.

The bean weevil, Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae), which attacks seeds in various leguminous crops, is reported for the first time in Egypt. The aim of this study was to determine the duration of the developmental stages and host preference of A. obtectus feeding on kidney bean, broad bean, cowpea, chickpea, and lentil seeds and estimate the amino acids related to the legume seeds. Acanthoscelides obtectus passes through six instars. The larvae developed rapidly on cowpea followed by kidney bean, chickpea, lentils, and broad bean for 21.7, 25.4, 28.7, 34.7, and 37.1 days, respectively. Pre-pupal periods in lentil, broad bean, cowpea, kidney bean, and chickpea were 1.0, 1.4, 2.6, 2.8, and 3.4 days, respectively. The pupa lasted 5.3, 5.3, 5.2, 4.2, and 3.0 days, respectively, in chickpea, broad bean, cowpea, kidney bean, and lentils. Male longevity was slightly lower (6.6–8.2 days) than that of the female (8.2–9.4 days). Mean fecundity (number eggs per female) was significantly higher on cowpea (44.8) than in broad bean (23.1) and kidney bean (11.9). The number of emergent adults indicated that kidney bean and cowpea seeds are more significantly preferable for A. obtectus than the other tested seeds. The infestation rate indicated that kidney bean is significantly preferable to A. obtectus. Infestation also caused the highest significant weight loss in cowpea seeds. Nine amino acids (aspartic acid, theronine, serenine, glysine, valanine, methionine, leucine, tryptophane, and histadine) essential for A. obtectus were of better quality in kidney bean. All nine amino acids were at high quality percentages in kidney bean and positively correlated with infestation rate. In conclusion, A. obtectus survives and develops best on kidney bean and then on cowpea and broad bean. Chickpea and lentil seeds are unsuitable for the development of the beetle.

Sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs) play an important role in pheromone detection and are considered a component of pheromone reception in insects. However, the SNMPs of Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, an important pest of stored cereals, have not previously been reported. In this study, we report four SNMPs (named SzeaSNMP1a, SzeaSNMP1b, SzeaSNMP2a, and SzeaSNMP2b) from the antennal transcriptome of adult S. zeamais, including their full-length open reading frames. Sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis suggest that these SzeaSNMPs have the general characteristics of SNMPs (two transmembrane domains and six conserved cysteine residues) and belong to two SNMP subgroups. To estimate the expression of SzeaSNMPs in different tissues, we performed quantitative real-time PCR. The SzeaSNMP1 genes (SzeaSNMP1a and SzeaSNMP1b) are mainly expressed in the antennae of males and females and weakly expressed in non-olfactory tissues such as legs and wings. In contrast, the SzeaSNMP2 (SzeaSNMP2a and SzeaSNMP2b) genes are highly expressed in male and female antennae, but we also detected relatively high levels of expression in non-olfactory tissues, especially SzeaSNMP2a in legs and wings.

The oil palm pollinating weevil Elaeidobius kamerunicus Faust (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) was first introduced into Malaysia from Cameroon in 1981 as the main oil palm pollinator. Adult weevils were collected from six localities in Malaysia, one locality in Indonesia, and one locality in Liberia. Morphometric analysis was performed to detect possible morphological differences among these populations. Fifteen morphometric characters were examined and analyzed using multivariate analyses. Principle Component Analysis indicated that there was complete separation by sexual dimorphism for weevils from the three countries. Snout length between the apex and anterior eye margin at mid-height, profemoral length, body length, and pronotal width at the widest point were the morphometric characters that differentiated male and female weevils. Canonical Discriminant Analysis suggested that separation existed among the three different countries, with 77.5% and 83.3% classification accuracy for males and females, respectively.
