We re-describe the type material of the tiny African tragulid “Dorcatherium” moruorotensis from the early Miocene of Kenya, and erect the new genus Afrotragulus, the first African Miocene tragulid that does not belong to Dorcatherium. This new taxon is characterized by its elongated and stretched lower molars with a unique morphological dental pattern that strongly contrasts with that of Dorcatherium. We additionally include the former “Dorcatherium” parvum, also a small species from the early Miocene of Kenya, into the new genus Afrotragulus as Afrotragulus parvus, figuring it for the first time. We discuss the usefulness of body size as the main taxonomical criterion for studying the Tragulidae. And finally we comment on the taxonomical and morphological diversity of tragulids in the moment of their sudden early Miocene re-apparition and expansion in the Old World.

Craniodental remains of a medium-sized beaver from the early middle Miocene of Hambach (MN 5) in the Lower Rhine Basin of northwestern Germany are described and assigned to Steneofiber depereti. The relatively rich material (6 mandibles and 56 isolated teeth) was collected from a single locality, Hambach 6C, and comprises specimens representing juvenile to very old individuals. This makes it possible to assess the morphologic and metric variability of a single population of Steneofiber depereti. Metrically, the mandibular tooth rows compare favorably in size to those of three subspecies described from the Loire Basin in France: Steneofiber depereti janvieri, Steneofiber d. caliodorensis, and Steneofiber d. depereti. Therefore in our opinion, division into subspecies cannot be applied to S. depereti in general. The difference in size between the smaller beaver from Hambach and the contemporaneous larger S. d. carnutense from the Loire Basin is remarkable. The taxonomy of early middle Miocene medium-sized castorids, referred to Steneofiber depereti, Steneofiber subpyrenaicus, and Chalicomys jaegeri is discussed. The presence of the derived beaver C. jaegeri in MN 4 to MN 6 is questioned and assignment to Steneofiber suggested. The occasional appearance of single C. jaegeri features in S. depereti supports the existence of a European lineage from the Orleanian S. depereti to the Vallesian C. jaegeri. The taxonomic status of S. subpyrenaicus remains unresolved.

We describe mammalian distal humeri recovered from the Bissekty Formation, Dzharakuduk, Kyzylkum Desert, Uzbekistan (90 Ma). Isolated elements were sorted into groups that likely correspond to species (or genera). These groups were allocated to taxa known mostly from the dentition, petrosals, and/or tarsals at this site. We identified one humerus of a multituberculate and one of a zalambdalestid. Several eutherian humeri have been tentatively assigned to Zhelestidae based on their dissimilarity to zalambdalestids and the abundance of zhelestids in the dental record. The zalambdalestids and zhelestids were probably terrestrial. At least two metatherian taxa have also been identified, and both were likely arboreal. Although the dental record suggests twelve eutherian species and only one metatherian, crurotarsal evidence supports the presence of at least four metatherian species at Dzharakuduk. The humeri analyzed here also provide support for the presence of multiple metatherians in the fauna, further demonstrating that postcrania are critical to understanding the taxonomic diversity present at these Late Cretaceous localities.

Ankylosaurs have spike-, plate-, and club-shaped osteoderms probably used as defensive and/or offensive weapons. Previous studies have proposed the evolution and function of small ankylosaur osteoderms, but histological variations in their defensive weapons are little known. Here, we provide comparisons of the internal structures in defensive weapons of ankylosaurs, which shed light on understanding their evolutionary history and function. Histological features of spikes, plates, and clubs are similar to those of small osteoderms in having thin compact bone, thick cancellous bone with large vascular canals, and abundant collagen fibers. A previous study demonstrated that each of the three groups of ankylosaurs (the Polacanthidae, Nodosauridae, and Ankylosauridae) have distinct arrangements of collagen fibers in small osteoderms. This study shows that spikes and clubs of ankylosaurs maintain the same characteristic features for each group despite the differences in shapes and sizes. These histological similarities suggest that various types of osteoderms in ankylosaurs retained the thin compact bone and abundant fiber structures of the small osteoderms during their evolution. Polacanthid spikes show thin compact bone, with less collagen fibers than in spikes of nodosaurids and spikes and clubs of ankylosaurids. Also, ankylosaurid plates with hollow bases are very thin in morphology and show thin compact bone. These results imply that the bone strengths of polacanthid spikes and ankylosaurid plates are lower than spikes and clubs of other ankylosaurs, indicating that they may be used more probably as display and/or thermoregulation rather than as weapons. It is thus probable that ankylosaur armor in general played more than just a defensive role.

It is important to understand the quality of the fossil record of early tetrapods (Tetrapoda, minus Lissamphibia and Amniota) because of their key role in the transition of vertebrates from water to land, their dominance of terrestrial faunas for over 100 million years of the late Palaeozoic and early Mesozoic, and their variable fates during the end-Permian mass extinction. The first description of an early tetrapod dates back to 1824, and since then discoveries have occurred at a rather irregular pace, with peaks and troughs corresponding to some of the vicissitudes of human history through the past two centuries. As expected, the record is dominated by the well-sampled sedimentary basins of Europe and North America, but finds from other continents are increasing rapidly. Comparisons of snapshots of knowledge in 1900, 1950, and 2000 show that discovery of new species has changed the shape of the species-level diversification curve, contrary to earlier studies of family-level taxa. There is, however, little evidence that taxon counts relate to research effort (as counted by numbers of publications), and there are no biasing effects associated with differential study of different time intervals through the late Palaeozoic and Mesozoic. In fact, levels of effort are apparently not related to geological time, with no evidence that workers have spent more time on more recent parts of the record. In particular, the end-Permian mass extinction was investigated to determine whether diversity changes through that interval might reflect worker effort: it turns out that most records of early tetrapod taxa (when corrected for duration of geological series) occur in the Lower Triassic.

Numerous isolated teeth, fin spine fragments and dermal denticles of a hybodont shark from a lacustrine limestone horizon at the top of lithofacies B of the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian succession of the Guardia Pisano Basin (Sulcis area, southwestern Sardinia, Italy) are assigned to a new species of the genus Lissodus Brough, 1935. Lissodus sardiniensis sp. nov. is erected on the basis of about 500 teeth, which show a unique feature of only one pair of lateral cusps that are bent in the direction of the prominent central cusp. Weak heterodonty allows distinction of symphyseal, mesial to anterolateral, and lateral teeth. Lissodus sardiniensis sp. nov. was a freshwater-adapted durophagous shark of bottom dwelling habit, an interpretation supported by general construction of the dentition and the morphology of the dermal denticles. The association with Acanthodes, diplodoselachid sharks and branchiosaurs allows the reconstruction of a five-level trophic chain for the Guardia Pisano Basin. The discovery of Lissodus in Sardinia is presently the southernmost known occurrence of that genus in the Late Palaeozoic of Europe. This new find adds significantly to knowledge of migration routes of aquatic organisms, especially freshwater sharks, between the single European basins in the Late Pennsylvanian, and changes in palaeobiogeography during the Early Permian.

Radiophronidae, a new ceraphronoid fossil family including two new genera and species, is described here from the Early Cretaceous (Albian) amber from the Basque Cantabrian Basin (Spain). Radiophron ibericus gen. et sp. nov. and Microcostaphron parvus gen. et sp. nov. are described from eight and one specimens respectively. The new fossils show some similarities with the extinct family Stigmaphronidae but are distinguished from it and the extant ceraphronoids mainly by the presence of not fused radial and costal veins, among other characteristics. A first cladistic analysis retrieves Radiophronidae as the basal sister-group to all other ceraphronoids (Ceraphronidae, Megaspilidae, and Stigmaphronidae).

As a result of a microfacial study in the outer and middle ramp deposits of the Vaca Muerta Formation (lower Tithonian-upper Valanginian), four ichnotaxa of crustacean microcoprolites are described: Palaxius azulensis Kietzmann isp. nov., Palaxius caracuraensis Kietzmann isp. nov., Helicerina? isp. A. aff. Helicerina siciliana and Helicerina isp. B. They represent one of the first records of crustacean microcoprolites for the Neuquén Basin and Argentina. Helicerina is reported for the first time from the Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous of South America. It is inferred that Palaxius ichnospecies were produced by callianassids, while Helicerina ichnospecies could be produced by decapods of Mecochiridae, Erymidae, and/or Nephropidae affinity. Two assemblages of crustacean microcoprolites are recognised, a middle Tithonian to lower Berriasian Palaxius-dominated assemblage and an early to late Valanginian Helicerina-dominated assemblage.

The present study of a large collection of orthid brachiopods from Middle Ordovician (middle Darriwilian) strata of Spanish regions of the Central Iberian Zone of the Iberian Massif, as well as the type collection of Portuguese species from the same Zone, revealed the occurrence of five genera of the family Orthidae, two of them new, and to which most of the seven previously reported species of Orthis from the same areas can be assigned. Besides the two new genera and species Almadenorthis auriculata Reyes-Abril and Villas gen. et sp. nov., and Gutiorthis incurvata Reyes-Abril and Villas gen. et sp. nov., three further new species are erected: Paralenorthis estenaensis Reyes-Abril and Villas sp. nov., Paralenorthis lolae Reyes-Abril and Villas sp. nov., and Sivorthis calatravaensis Reyes-Abril and Villas sp. nov. Paralenorthis alata and Orthambonites sp. are also identified in the same beds. Orthis noctilio is ascribed to the genus Sivorthis, and the species Orthis lusitanica and Orthis miniensis are restricted to only their type specimens. Orthis duriensis is poorly described and illustrated, its type material missing, and actually it may belong to Sivorthis noctilio. These brachiopod taxa invaded the cold waters of the Afro-South European Gondwanan margin from lower latitudes, coincident with the mid Darriwilian transgression, as they belonged to a family that diversified in temperate and tropical seas during the early Mid Ordovician.

The fossil polychaete family Polychaeturidae is considered as monogeneric and comprises four species of the genus Pteropelta. Pteropelta, originally established on isolated scolecodonts (the carriers), is revised and the apparatus-based Polychaetura is shown to be a junior synonym of Pteropelta. In addition to Pteropelta gladiata and Pteropelta kielanae, Pteropelta huberti sp. nov., and Pteropelta sp. A are herein described from the Upper Ordovician of Estonia and Sweden. Polychaeturids include some of the most common and characteristic scolecodont-bearing polychaetes in the Ordovician of Baltoscandia. They first appeared in the early Darriwilian (Mid Ordovician), flourished in the Late Ordovician and disappeared in the early Silurian. The distribution patterns of individual polychaeturid species infer regional biostratigraphical potential. Polychaeturids were geographically widespread during the Ordovician and have been recorded from at least three palaeocontinents.

A new species of tannuolinid, Tannuolina pavlovi, is reported from the basal Krasnoporog Formation cropping out along the Sukharikha River at the northwestern margin of the Siberian Platform. The new material expands the geographic range of tannuolinids onto the Siberian Platform and extends their stratigraphic range into the basal Tommotian Stage of the traditional Lower Cambrian. The oldest appearance of tannuolinids in the fossil record is shown herein to have occurred as early as the oldest appearance of the linguliformean brachiopods, of which tannuolinids have been suggested to be a stem group. The sellate sclerites of T. pavlovi sp. nov. are different from those of the other known species of Tannuolina in the consistent absence of a pronounced sella and duplicature on the respective sides of sclerites, as well as in having regularly distributed large setal pores on the lateral edges. The mitral sclerites of T. pavlovi sp. nov. do not clearly show asymmetry of left and right forms, manifested in other species by the presence of the carina on the interior surface. Large pores aligned along the lateral margins of sellate sclerites regularly coalesce below the wall surface from an apically and an aperturally directed basal branch, forming a nearly right angle.

Recurvoides infernus sp. nov., one of the oldest representatives of the superfamily Recurvoidacea (Foraminifera), is described from a thin black claystone overlying the manganese deposits of the Krížna Unit in the Western Tatra Mountains (Poland). These manganese carbonates/silicates were laid down around a shallow-water exhalative submarine hydrothermal vent that was active in the early Toarcian. The microfossils are possibly the first described Jurassic foraminifera associated with hydrothermal vents. The assemblage is characterized by a high abundance and dominance of this new species. The primary lamination of the black claystone, the lack of any macrofauna, and an elevated TOC content point to oxygen-deficient conditions during sedimentation of these deposits. Furthermore, the nearly exclusive occurrence of agglutinated foraminifers suggests a low pH level. It is likely that the foraminifers colonized vent-related bacterial mats which acted as a rich and stable food source. Modern shallow- and deep-water hydrothermal vents may represent similar habitats.

Eight species of pteridosperms with callipterid foliage belonging to four genera are described from the upper Gzhelian of Donets Basin. The fossils indicate that the fronds of the callipterids belonging to the genera Lodevia, Dichophyllum, and Raminervia are bipartite in the upper part and are distinguished by the morphology of the penultimate order pinnae. The main diagnostic character of callipterid species with dissected pinnules is the shape of the pinnule segments. The degree of segmentation of pinnules and their size are considered to represent intraspecific variability expressing the heteroblastic development of the foliage. The taphonomical features of the plant remains and facies interpretations of the plant-bearing strata, including floodplain, floodplain-lacustrine and lacustrine deposits, indicate that the callipterids were dominant elements of the floodplain vegetation in the late Gzhelian.
