Roux J. P. 2011. — The fern genera Dryopteris and Nothoperanema (Dryopteridaceae) in Madagascar and neighbouring Indian Ocean islands, including Saint Paul. Adansonia, sér. 3, 33 (1) : 7-67.

Based on detailed morphological studies of a large number of herbarium specimens from various herbaria, a review of the fern genera Dryopteris and Nothoperanema in Madagascar and neighbouring Indian Ocean islands, including Saint Paul, is presented. Eleven species and a putative hybrid are recorded for the region, seven of these are considered endemic to the region.

Castellanos C., Kolterman D. A. & Vester H. F. M. 2011. — Architectural analysis of Buxus vahlii Baill. (Buxaceae) in two different environments in Puerto Rico. Adansonia, sér. 3, 33 (1): 71–80.

The analysis of the architecture of Buxus vahlii Baill. (Buxaceae) in western Puerto Rico is presented. Two populations growing in different environmental conditions were studied: one is a coastal forest in the municipality of Rincón and the other is a mountain forest with karstic formations in the municipality of Isabela. The growth pattern in Buxus vahlii follows Champagnat's model. Four stages of development were identified: seedling, juvenile tree, mature tree and senescent tree. The stem and branches of the tree are sympodially built by the superposition of mixed orthotropic axes. Two different crown shapes have been recorded in B. vahlii in Puerto Rico: in the Rincón forest, the shape is laminar, while in Isabela, it is in-between a funnel and cup shape.

Hughes M. 2011. — A new species of fleshy-fruited Begonia (Begoniaceae) from the Masoala Peninsula, Madagascar. Adansonia, sér. 3, 33(1): 81–85.

A new species of Begonia (B. masoalaensis M. Hughes, sp. nov.) is described from the Masoala Peninsula in north-east Madagascar. The species has fleshy fruit, but bears no other similarity to other fleshy fruited Begonia from Madagascar, and hence probably represents a secondary acquisition of this character, possibly to facilitate zoochory. Begonia masoalaensis possesses an unusual spicate inflorescence architecture, derived from a highly modified monochasial cyme. It is considered to be in the “Vulnerable” IUCN Red List category (VUD2).

Lectotypification of Astragalus secundus DC. (Fabaceae), rediscovery of a candollean type missing for 140 years.

A lectotype of Astragalus secundus DC. is designated, based on original material from the Paris herbarium (P), and identified by using the relevant literature and the inscriptions on the specimen. This search for Astragalus types is conducted in the context of the GPI digitization project.

Pahlevani A. H. & Mozaffarian V. 2011. — Euphorbia iranshahri (Euphorbiaceae), a new endemic species from Iran. Adansonia, sér. 3, 33 (1): 93–99.

During the joined study on recently collected specimens and herbarium sheets belonging to the genus Euphorbia (Euphorbiaceae), a new species, Euphorbia iranshahri Pahlevani, was reported and illustrated as endemic from the Zagros Mountains in Iran. This species is morphologically distinct from E. microsciadia Boiss. by possessing 6–8 rays and ray-leaves, subulate cyathia lobes longer than (or sometimes equal to) anthers, sharp-keeled capsules and smooth seeds.

Koopman M. M. 2011. — A synopsis of the Malagasy endemic genus Megistostegium Hochr. (Hibisceae, Malvaceae). Adansonia, sér. 3, 33 (1): 101–113.

A synopsis of the endemic Malagasy genus Megistostegium (Malvaceae) is presented based on material from herbarium specimens and field observations. Principle Components Analysis, using measurements from herbarium specimens throughout the range of the genus and vegetative measurements from one site of sympatry where all three species grow in close proximity, assigns the accessions of Megistostegium to three distinct clusters that differ dramatically in habit, leaf size and shape, flower size and morphology. These correspond to the three traditionally delimited species and these morphological boundaries appear to be maintained despite gene flow. A key to the species is presented and pollen characters, ethnobotanical uses and conservation status are also included.

Barrabé L., Mouly A., Lowry II P. P. & Munzinger J. 2011. — Reinstatement of the endemic New Caledonian genus Thiollierea Montrouz. (Rubiaceae) necessitated by the polyphyly of Bikkia Reinw. as currently circumscribed. Adansonia, sér. 3, 33 (1): 115–134.

The genus Bikkia Reinw. as currently circumscribed comprises 20 species distributed throughout the western Pacific Ocean, with a center of diversity in New Caledonia (11 species, all but one endemic). Two recent phylogenetic studies based respectively on molecular and morphological data have shown that Bikkia s.l. is polyphyletic, comprising two lineages: coastal Bikkia from the western Pacific (including the type species of the genus, B. tetrandra (L.f.) A.Rich.) and endemic New Caledonian Bikkia, a situation that necessitates the resurrection of the generic name Thiollierea Montrouz., the oldest available for the second of these groups. An emended description is provided for Thiollierea as well as a summary of the features that distinguish it from Bikkia s.s., and seven new combinations are proposed (T. kaalaensis (N.Hallé & Jérémie) Barrabé & Mouly, T. lenormandii (N.Hallé & Jérémie) Barrabé & Mouly, T. neriifolia (Brongn.) Barrabé & Mouly, T. pachyphylla (Guillaumin) Barrabé & Mouly, T. parviflora (Schltr. & K.Krause) Barrabé & Mouly, T. retusiflora (Brongn.) Barrabé & Mouly and T. tubiflora (Brongn.) Barrabé & Mouly).

Two new species of Thiollierea (Rubiaceae) restricted to hypermagnesian soils of Boulinda massif (New Caledonia).

Two new species of Thiollierea (Rubiaceae) endemic from New Caledonia are described and illustrated. A key to all species of the genus Thiollierea is provided, Thiollierea rigaultii sp. nov. and T. dagostinii sp. nov. belong to the group of Thiollierea with white and purplish flowers, Thiollierea rigaultii sp. nov. has several unique morphological characters, never recorded before in the group: 1-flowered inflorescences, colleters totally covering the internal face of the calyx, and large and coriaceous corollas, Thiollierea dagostinii sp. nov. is characterized by a new and original combination of morphological characters: colleters totally covering stipules adaxially, sub-winged hypanthium, calyx tube obvious without secondary tear, hirsute and cylindrical filament indumentum. Both species are endemic to Boulinda, an ultramafic massif on the North-Western coast of New Caledonia. Their populations are restricted to small forest edges, on hypermagnesian soils, where microendemism is important. The evaluation of IUCN status of these two rare species placed them in the category “critically endangered” (CR).
