In situ observations of the cock-eyed squid Stigmatoteuthis dofleini (Pfeffer, 1912) were recorded in high definition video at 439 m depth off the eastern seaboard of Japan during a survey by the ROV HyperDolphin. Novel behaviors including a quick body turn (ratcheting) were observed and are reported here with discussion on their ecological significance.
