As the 1987–1988 Congressional Science Fellow of the American Institute of Biological Sciences and American Society of Zoologists, Dr. Blockstein worked with the environment subcommittee of the House science committee to prepare the National Biological Diversity Conservation and Environmental Research Act. He is the chair of the Ornithological Council and a Fellow of the American Ornithologists' Union. His research focuses on ecology and conservation of pigeons and doves.
