It's summertime, and the livin' is easy, at least for Jamaican bioluminescent click beetles—those that produce orange light, that is. The beetles, say biology students Sebastian Velez, Uwe Stolz, and Jeffrey Feder of the University of Notre Dame, represent evolution in action, one of the virtually hundreds of such examples discussed at the 53rd annual meeting of the American Institute of Biological Sciences (22–24 March 2002). The meeting addressed “Evolution: Understanding Life on Earth.”
