The taxonomic status of Agave horrida subsp. perotensis is reevaluated with a change from subspecies to species level. This change is based on Agave horrida subsp. perotensis being larger plants with longer and broader leaves with a longer terminal spine, and their flowering period being from June–August compared to the February–March flowering for Agave horrida subsp. horrida. In addition, a new species, Agave yucuanensis endemic to the gypsophilous soil on Cerro El Organal in Tlaxiaco District of western Oaxaca, Mexico, is described. Its vegetative and flower morphology places this species in the section Heteracanthae, and is compared to Agave convallis, A. garciae-mendozae, A. horrida subsp. horrida, and A. perotensis. This brings the total number of taxa in the section Heteracanthae to 33; plants in the section occur from western Texas south through the Chihuahuan Desert Region to southern Mexico into Chiapas and adjacent Guatemala.

Este cambio se basa en que Agave horrida susp. perotensis corresponde a plantas más grandes con hojas más largas y anchas, espina terminal más larga y su period de floración es de junio a Agosto, en comparación con la floración de febrero a marzo de Agave horrida subsp. horrida. Además, se describe una nueva especie, Agave yucuanensis, endémica de suelos yesosos del cerro El Organal. En el Distrito de Tlaxiaco al oeste de Oaxaca, México. Su morfología vegetative y floral la ubica en la sección Heteracanthae y se compara con Agave convallis, A. garciae-mendozae, A. horrida subsp. horrida, y A. perotensis. Esto eleva a 33 el número total de taxa en la sección Heteracanthae; las plantas de esta sección se encuentran desde el oeste de Texas hacia el sur a través del la region del desierto de Chihuahua hasta el sur de México, en Chiapas y Guatemala.
