Recent field work and herbarium studies of historical collections resulted in one hundred and seventy-five moss species and one variety (in 38 families and 96 genera) from Streaked Mountain and the surrounding area in the Foothills Region of the Western Mountains of Maine (Oxford County). Streaked Mountain is Devonian in age and consists of igneous rocks, including granitic pegmatite, overlaid with meta-sedimentary rock as well layers of meta-limestone rock and more recently deposited glacial sediments. This study surveyed approximately a nine square mile area. Three species rare for Maine (Andreaea crassinervia, Racomitrium aduncoides and Plagiothecium latebricola) are present on Streaked Mountain. Five species, including several calciphiles that were collected in the late 1800s were not relocated: Cirriphyllum piliferum, Dicranum spurium, Entodon cladohorrizans Hylocomiastrum umbratum, and Leucobryum albidum.
