On December 7, 2007, the Hebei-Spirit oil spill poured 10,900 tons of light crude oil into the waters off the Yellow Sea of the Republic of Korea following a collision between a Samsung Heavy Industries crane barge and the Hebei-Spirit oil tanker (KORDI Staff, 2008; Hebei-Spirit Oil Spill cleanup; Korea Ocean and Research Development Institute, 48p). The Hebei-Spirit oil spill was the largest spill in Korean history, and it dramatically affected the fishing and tourism communities of the Taean region in Choognam Province. Typically, oil spills cause considerable damage to the fishing and tourism industries because of those industries' dependence on natural coastal resources. Though fishing and tourism are affected by the spill simultaneously, their distinct resource uses, industry characteristics, and culture lead to different reactions and outcomes.
