A novel noncontact repellency assay system (NCRAS) was designed and evaluated as a possible alternative method for testing compounds that repel or inhibit mosquitoes from blood feeding. Deet and Aedes aegypti were used in a controlled laboratory setting. Using 2 study designs, a highly significant difference were seen between deet-treated and untreated skin placed behind the protective screens, indicating that deet was detected and was acting as a deterrence to mosquito landing and probing behavior. However, a 2nd study showed significant differences between protected (behind a metal screen barrier) and unprotected (exposed) deet-treated forearms, indicating the screen mesh might restrict the detection of deet and thus influences landing/biting response. These findings indicate the prototype NCRAS shows good promise but requires further evaluation and possible modification in design and testing protocol to achieve more desirable operational attributes in comparison with direct skin-contact repellency mosquito assays.

A study of the behavioral responses of Aedes aegypti and Anopheles minimus to 3 Cambodian plant extracts at 3 different concentrations (1%, 2.5%, and 5%) was performed using an excito-repellency test system. These 3 plants were Strophanthus scandens, Capparis micracantha, and Dioscorea hispida, selected according to traditional healer's knowledge, bibliographic studies and market surveys. Results showed that S. scandens leaves' hexane extract was the only one to exert repellency against Ae. aegypti with 23.3% of escaped mosquitoes at a concentration of 5%. Capparis micracantha was responsible for an irritant activity against An. minimus with 20.2% of escaped mosquitoes at a concentration of 2.5% and 22.8% escaping at a concentration of 5%. Dioscorea hispida showed an irritant activity on both mosquito species with 23.2% of escaped Ae. aegypti at a concentration of 5% and about 20% of escaped An. minimus at 2.5% and 5%. This is the first report on the irritant and repellent activities of S. scandens, D. hispida, and C. micracantha against mosquito species.

Three exotic mosquito-borne pathogens—dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses—transmitted by Aedes albopictus and Ae. aegypti have undergone dramatic global expansion in recent years. The control of vector populations and minimizing bites from these vectors are the primary methods of reducing risk of transmission of these viruses to humans. However, Ae. albopictus and Ae. aegypti are notoriously challenging to control through conventional chemical means, due primarily to difficulties in applying pesticides to their cryptic larval habitats. A novel strategy for suppressing populations of these species is the autodissemination of insect growth regulators (IGRs), in which adult female mosquitoes are attracted to a treatment station where they are tainted with small amounts of potent IGR. When the adult females subsequently visit oviposition sites, they inadvertently disseminate the IGR to larval development sites, suppressing their own population. Implementing this technology to control natural vector populations presents substantial logistical challenges. The current manuscript describes laboratory bioassays and field evaluations to design a novel autodissemination station (ADS) and test the methodology at field locations in Florida where Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus are abundant and pose a risk for transmission of emerging pathogens. The prototype ADS is intended to attract host-seeking, resting site–seeking, and oviposition site–seeking females through a combination of visual and olfactory cues. The efficacy of this strategy was assessed through the use of sentinel ovicups at field locations in Indian River County and Martin County, FL. Greatest efficacy (45.3 ± 7.7% mortality in treatment sentinel ovicups) was achieved at a field site with few competing natural ovisites, while much lower efficacy was observed in locations with numerous competing ovisites (0.0 to 29.0 ± 8.2% mortality). The efficacy of the ADS is likely to be strongly affected by the abundance of competing ovisites, the population dynamics, and climatic conditions.

Floating emergence traps were used in 15 road gullies to determine the effectiveness and longevity of S-methoprene briquets over 124 days. Samples were taken monthly from October 2014 to March 2015. Two treatment methods were assessed: application of briquet using a float, and application without a float. These methods were compared with untreated control gullies. Mosquito emergence peaked in early November, and decreased by February. Effectiveness of the briquet was not impacted significantly by the presence or absence of a float (P = 0.329). Gullies yielded a mean of 108 mosquitoes per day per gully over the season. Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes notoscriptus were the most abundant species. The maximum number of Cx. quinquefasciatus emerging could exceed 1,600 per day per gully. Aedes notoscriptus numbers could exceed 70 adults per day per gully. Treatment with S-methoprene was highly effective against both species for at least 70 days and partially effective for up to 120 days. Treatment provided no control by day 124. S-methoprene provided 90% control over 124 days. Road gullies have been confirmed as a significant larval habitat and are likely to be increasing the potential for Ross River virus transmission in the area.

Dengue vector control still heavily relies on the use of chemical insecticides, and the widespread use of insecticides has led to resistance in mosquitoes. The diagnostic dose is a key part of resistance monitoring. The present study corroborates the discriminating lethal doses of temephos and malathion based on dose–response of known susceptible strain of Aedes albopictus following the World Health Organization (WHO) diagnostic test procedure. Late 3rd and early 4th instars were tested with a range of larvicides to determine the lethal concentrations (LC₅₀ and LC₉₉) values. A slightly higher diagnostic dose of 0.020 mg/liter as compared with the WHO-established value of 0.012 mg/liter was observed for temephos. Meanwhile, a malathion diagnostic dose of 0.200 mg/liter is also reported here since there are no such reported values by WHO. Doubling the LC₉₉ values of susceptible strains, 3 of the 5 wild-collected populations showed resistance to temephos and 2 showed incipient resistance; all 5 populations showed incipient resistance to malathion. The revised and established lethal diagnostic dose findings from the current work are crucial to elaborate on the variation in susceptibility of Ae. albopictus in future resistance monitoring programs in Malaysia.

Because Aedes aegypti, a vector of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses, exhibits resting and reproductive behaviors that present challenges to control them, pesticide application equipment available for vector control must be evaluated for their ability to control this species in a variety of cryptic environments. Five types of pesticide sprayers, representing 3 spray technologies (1 mister, 2 ultra-low volume [ULV] cold foggers, and 2 ULV thermal foggers), were evaluated for their ability to control adult and immature stages of Ae. aegypti in indoor and outdoor environments. Cages holding adult mosquitoes and larvae were placed in cryptic sites for indoor sprays and placed among dense vegetation for outdoor sprays. Adult and pupal mortality data were recorded following applications of a mixture of synergized pyrethrins and pyriproxyfen. We found that no single sprayer was best suited for controlling Ae. aegypti in indoor and outdoor environments, nor was one best for controlling adult and immature mosquitoes. Sprayers producing larger droplets (misters and cold foggers) were more effective in controlling immature mosquitoes indoors and outdoors. Thermal fogging was more effective in controlling adults indoors, whereas cold fogs and misters were more effective for outdoor control.

Leishmania infantum (syn. chagasi) is the etiologic agent of visceral leishmaniasis in Argentina, and the phlebotomine fly Lutzomyia longipalpis is its main vector. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Dragon Max^®, an emulsifiable concentrate formulation containing the pyrethroid permethrin and the larvicide pyriproxyfen, for Lu. longipalpis control under field conditions. The work was conducted in the city of Posadas (Misiones province, Argentina). Comparisons were performed between treated and untreated peridomiciles with poultry, which met previously determined criteria for favoring the presence of Lu. longipalpis. Henhouses and their surrounding area were treated, with the formulation (100 mg of permethrin and 2 mg/m² of pyriproxyfen) applied using a hand pump sprayer. Untreated henhouses were used as controls. Phlebotomine abundance was monitored before treatment and then weekly, using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention light traps. Lutzomyia longipalpis was the only phlebotomine species captured. A male/female ratio of 2.5 was observed. The more chickens there were in the henhouses, the greater the number of phlebotomines captured. The treatment resulted in a significant decrease in the number of individuals, which persisted for at least 2 wk. This encouraging result provides a baseline for further studies evaluating the possibility of using Dragon Max as a tool for Lu. longipalpis control.

Mosquito surveillance was carried out in Batumi, Georgia, in August 2014. Aedes albopictus was detected for the first time, which brought the number of reported mosquito species in Georgia to 32. An updated checklist of the mosquitoes of Georgia is provided.

The occurrence of the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, has been reported in the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, Coahuila (northeastern), Veracruz, Chiapas, Quintana Roo (southeastern), Morelos, San Luis Potosí (middle), and Sinaloa (northwestern). In April and September 2012, Ae. albopictus was collected in a variety of habitats and landing/biting on the collecting personnel in 12 counties of Hidalgo state (middle). This is the first record of the occurrence of this species in Hidalgo state.

In Mexico the Psorophora genus includes 24 species divided into 3 subgenera: Grabhamia, Janthinosoma, and Psorophora. Some species occur in the Nearctic region of the country (northern Mexico), whereas other species occur in the Neotropical region (southern Mexico), and a few species occur in both regions. In Quintana Roo, Mexico, 7 species have been previously recorded: Ps. confinnis s.s., Ps. champerico, Ps. cyanescens, Ps. ferox, Ps. lutzii, Ps. ciliata, and Ps. lineata. In October 2013, 24 females of Ps. albipes were collected using CDC light traps. This is the first record of this species in Quintana Roo.

A chronological list of species based on date of publication is provided for confirmed mosquito species in West Virginia. Five additional newly found species in the state are documented with collection data. Two previously misidentified or mislabeled published records are corrected. The number of confirmed species occurring in the state is now 35, and many more species are likely present, but undetected. Significant populations of 4 widely distributed known vector species, Aedes albopictus, Ae. japonicus japonicus, Ae. triseriatus, and Culex pipiens, in West Virginia signal an urgent need for additional studies, surveillance, and increased mosquito control efforts to help prevent future native and invasive arbovirus infections and outbreaks in local residents.

Aedes aegypti, Ae. albopictus, Ae. japonicus japonicus, and Ae. triseriatus eggs are described with the aid of color images and images from scanning electron microscopy. All eggs were broadly cigar shaped with Ae. triseriatus and Ae. j japonicus eggs being dull or matte black, while Ae. albopictus and Ae. aegypti eggs were shiny jet black. Aedes triseriatus eggs were lighter in color and had a rougher appearance when compared to those of Ae. j. japonicus. Aedes albopictus and Ae. aegypti eggs can be differentiated by the distinct presence of micropylar collars in Ae. aegypti. Our results reduce the need to rear these mosquitoes, reducing labor and time while providing an accurate identification of the vector mosquitoes.

Recent autodissemination studies have popularly favored pyriproxyfen, but methoprene is already established and widely used in control programs. This study demonstrated that methoprene could also autodisseminate through contaminated gravid females. Arenas of oviposition cups were arranged around methoprene-contaminated bait stations. Gravid female Aedes albopictus were released to allow oviposition. All cups were then removed and tested in an insect growth regulator bioassay. Liquid formulations did not result in adequate autodissemination among treatment groups. Granular formulations pulverized into a fine powder resulted in successful autodissemination. Emergence inhibition was recorded as high as 85% in individual assays. Pooled inhibition across the granular trials was 56.7%. Methoprene has benefits similar to pyriproxyfen use and has the added advantage of already being established and readily available in existing mosquito control programs throughout the USA. Methoprene is a good candidate for continued investigation of autodissemination.

Despite an extensive literature on mosquitoes, remarkably little attention has been paid to males. Current interest in control by release of transgenic males begs attention to this bias. It is well known that males are more susceptible to insecticides than females when determined by the standard World Health Organization (WHO) bioassay, and field observations have shown a higher impact of ultra-low-volume (ULV) space sprays. It is generally assumed that these differences are due to the smaller size of males and/or greater physiological susceptibility. We compared susceptibility by WHO bioassay and by topical application. There was a significant difference between the sexes in terms of dose effect and knockdown by the WHO test, but no significant difference by weight-adjusted topical application. We conclude that greater susceptibility of males is solely a function of their size and suggest that a ULV treatment before the release of transgenic males would greatly increase their competitive ratio versus wild mosquitoes and thus their impact as a control measure.

Dengue viruses cause hundreds of millions of infections every year in tropical and subtropical countries. Unfortunately, there is not a single universal vector control method capable of suppressing Aedes aegypti (L.) populations. Amongst novel control tools or approaches are various types of traps targeting gravid females or their eggs. Here, we provide details of the operational use of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention autocidal gravid ovitrap (CDC-AGO trap) for the surveillance and control of Ae. aegypti. Adult mosquitoes were monitored every week in 2 isolated neighborhoods treated with 3 AGO traps per house in 85% of houses and in 2 reference neighborhoods without control traps. Between March 2013 and April 2015 we serviced the AGO traps 14 times in each community (every 2 months). Common trap problems were absent or broken trap tops (1–1.5%), flooded (0.1–0.7%) or dry (0.5–1.3%) traps, and missing (0.3–0.8%) or vandalized (0.5–1.4%) traps. Most traps kept a volume of infusion between 45% and 97% of their original volume (10 liters). Nontarget organisms captured in AGO traps were mostly small flies, and to a lesser extent ants, cockroaches, grasshoppers, butterflies, dragonflies, and lizards. Trap coverage ranged between 83% and 87% of houses in both communities throughout the study. We interpret such high levels of trap retention over time as an expression of acceptance by the community.
