Ichthyosaurus conybeari is a rare species, previously known only from an incomplete holotype and one referred specimen, both from the Lyme Regis area of the west Dorset coast, U. K. A newly recognized, nearly complete specimen (NMW 93.5G.2) is the first occurrence of the species in Somerset, U. K. A revised diagnosis recognizes new morphological characters that distinguish the species: slender maxilla with a long, delicate premaxillary process; narrow postorbital; humerus with an anteriorly offset dorsal process that has a well-defined lip extending slightly into the shaft; fibula that is much larger dorsoventrally and mediodistally than tibia; and wide rectangular ischium that is much shorter than the pubis and femur. Notching of anterior fin elements in the forefin had been used as a diagnostic character, but a review of notching within Ichthyosaurus suggests that it has little taxonomic utility. Another specimen (NHMUK R15907), herein referred to the species, extends the range of I. conybeari from the upper Hettangian to lower Pliensbachian stages of the Lower Jurassic, the longest duration of any species of the genus.

We provide new and revised identifications of mammals from the early middle Miocene (Langhian age, Colloncuran South American Land Mammal Age [SALMA]) of Cerdas, Bolivia. We also formally name a new typothere notoungulate, Hegetotherium cerdasensis, sp. nov., that can be distinguished by the absence of an external talonid sulcus on m3 and its small size (15–25% smaller than Hegetotherium mirabile). We refer several typothere specimens from Nazareno, Bolivia, to H. cerdasensis, which suggests that the two sites are of similar age. We report the first sparassodont and astrapothere remains from Cerdas. Sparassodont remains include an associated basicranium and mostly complete mandible; the species appears to represent a new, small-bodied borhyaenoid. Astrapothere remains consist of many tooth fragments from a new species of the subfamily Uruguaytheriinae. A partial sloth dentary from Cerdas likely pertains to the subfamily Megatheriinae and is the first report of the family Megatheriidae from the site. A newly discovered peltephilid armadillo specimen includes a partial articulated carapace that supports recognition of the Cerdas taxon as a new species. The two dasypodids of Cerdas (one Euphractini, one Eutatini) represent two new species closely related to undescribed species from the late middle Miocene (Serravallian age, Laventan SALMA) of Quebrada Honda, Bolivia. The mammals of Cerdas indicate that (1) the middle latitudes (southern tropics) contributed significantly to the diversity of Miocene mammal communities in South America; and (2) the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum was a key factor in the differentiation of South American mammal assemblages.

Here we report new rebbachisaurid material (MMCh-PV 71) recovered from the Candeleros Formation (Cenomanian) of northwest Patagonia, Argentina. The cranial remains consist of a partial braincase and a right quadrate. Fractures in the braincase exposed the endocranial cavity, allowing the first study of the brain and inner ear morphologies of a South American rebbachisaurid. The braincase and cranial endocast both exhibit traits similar to those observed in the Cretaceous rebbachisaurs Nigersaurus from Africa and Limaysaurus from Argentina, although in terms of osteology, the South American taxa are highly similar. The endocast of MMCh-PV 71 is more similar to that of Nigersaurus than to those of Diplodocus and Camarasaurus, suggesting some probable rebbachisaurid features such as the noteworthy presence of the flocculus. The overall morphology of the quadrate shows similarities with Limaysaurus and Nigersaurus. However, differences such as the broader posterior fossa and the shape and orientation of the head and the pterygoid process indicate that the new specimen could represent a distinct taxon.

Modern wild sheep, Ovis, is widespread in the mountain ranges of the Caucasus through Himalaya, Tibetan Plateau, Tianshan-Altai, eastern Siberia, and the Rocky Mountains in North America. In Eurasia, fossil sheep are known at a few Pleistocene sites in North China, eastern Siberia, and western Europe, but are so far absent from the Tibetan Plateau. We describe an extinct sheep, Protovis himalayensis, gen. et sp. nov., from the Pliocene of the Zanda Basin in western Himalaya. Smaller than the living argali, this new form shares with Ovis posterolaterally arched horncores and partially developed sinuses and possesses several transitional characters leading to Ovis. Protovis likely subsisted on C3 plants, which are the dominant vegetation in the Zanda area during the Pliocene. With the discovery of this new genus and species, we extend the fossil record for the sheep clade into the Pliocene of the Tibetan Plateau, consistent with our previous out-of-Tibet hypothesis. Ancestral sheep in the Pliocene were presumed adapted to high altitude and cold environments, and during the Ice Age, sheep became anatomically modern and dispersed outside of the Tibetan Plateau. Both this new fossil datum and the existing molecular phylogeny suggest that the Tibetan Plateau, possibly including Tianshan-Altai, represents the ancestral home range(s) of mountain sheep and that these basal stocks were the ultimate source of all extant species. Most sheep species survived along their Pleistocene route of dispersal, offering a highly consistent pattern of zoogeography.

A new fossil crocodile, Ultrastenos willisi, is described from a cranium and postcranial materials collected from the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, northwestern Queensland, Australia. The mandible displays pronounced anterior constriction, approaching that seen in the extant gharial, Gavialis gangeticus, and false gharial, Tomistoma schlegelii. As such, U. willisi potentially filled the ecomorphological niche associated with longirostry that has been previously unaccounted for in Riversleigh's Oligo-Miocene crocodile fauna. The pronounced constriction and features of the posterior cranium further distinguish U. willisi from all other known crocodiles, including the only reported Australian Oligo-Miocene longirostral crocodile, Harpacochampsa camfieldensis, from Bullock Creek in the Northern Territory. Ultrastenos willisi is recognized as a new genus and species assigned to subfamily Mekosuchinae on the basis of phylogenetic analysis.

As in modern elasmobranchs (sharks and rays), the shagreen of the hybodontiform shark Tribodus limae (Santana Formation, Aptian-Albian, Lower Cretaceous, northeastern Brazil) consists of non-growing (monodontode) dermal denticles that were shed, replaced, and supplemented by new ones during life. In modern elasmobranchs, these denticles are usually represented by a single size class (considered here to be the default arrangement), although larger denticles are sometimes present locally (e.g., thorn rows on the head and trunk in batomorphs). In Tribodus, however, the shagreen consists of two distinct morphological denticle types and size classes (two-size), both widely distributed over the body and fins, with smaller denticles overlying the bases of larger thorns as well as occupying areas between them. Using two conceptually distinct variants of a two-layer reaction-diffusion (R-D) simulation that is consistent with morphogen exchange across the basal lamina between the epidermal and dermal layers, we recovered two-size spatial arrangements similar to the Tribodus shagreen. Our results suggest that denticle patterning in the dermal skeleton of sharks can be replicated using R-D models with kinetics similar to those previously applied to a known mechanism of feather bud patterning in birds and to skin pigmentation patterning in modern teleost fishes. Reaction-diffusion simulations operationalize Reif's ‘odontode regulation theory,’ and so have an important conceptual place in the history of research on the dermal skeleton. Such a modeling framework may enable conceptual links to be drawn among seemingly disparate denticle arrays in Paleozoic and recent chondrichthyans, thereby guiding future work on the molecular and histological underpinnings of dermal skeleton development and evolution.

Increased human activity and environmental disturbances are currently eroding the high biodiversity of the tropics. Insights from the fossil record have the potential to inform conservation decisions in these regions. Conservation paleontology has played a transformative role in defining appropriate conservation goals in temperate systems, and recent applications in the tropics showcase the broad applicability of this field. Here, we highlight paleontology's role in the conservation of the tropics. We show that community-level and species-level responses commonly detected by paleontologists, such as range shifts, inform present-day population trajectories and functional diversity changes. Furthermore, advances in techniques such as ancient DNA recovery make querying ancient tropical diversity more tractable. These analyses have direct applications to policies ranging from reserve design to species reintroductions. Despite these breakthroughs, much work still remains for conservation paleontology to reach its full potential in the tropics. Increased regional coverage is necessary for areas such as Southeast Asia and the Amazon, two biogeographically important regions with highly threatened faunas. Taxonomic sampling biases must be eliminated, and we call for additional data representing amphibians and birds, which are underrepresented in paleontological data sets of terrestrial vertebrates. We also recommend further analyses of existing reptile collections, which are abundant but underutilized because of a dearth of comparative collections. We highlight recent contributions to conservation paleontology in these taxonomic groups and regions whenever possible, and showcase successful collaborations between paleontologists, neontologists, and conservationists outside of academia to illustrate the influence paleontologists can exert in conservation efforts.

The Lower Permian Richards Spur locality is the most speciose Paleozoic continental vertebrate assemblage currently known, and a significant proportion of the tetrapod diversity found at the locality is made up of parareptiles. The first Richards Spur parareptile to be described was Colobomycter pholeter. It has been characterized by its enlarged premaxillary tooth and paired enlarged maxillary teeth, unique dentition that grants it an appearance quite distinct from other parareptiles at Richards Spur. Here we describe new cranial material from Richards Spur that is referable to Colobomycter. This new material differs from that of C. pholeter in that it possesses at least three more teeth on its maxilla, the enlarged premaxillary and maxillary teeth are more gracile than those in C. pholeter, and the lacrimal is restricted externally to the orbital margin and does not exhibit an extra lateral exposure. We infer that these differences merit specific distinction and assign the new fossil to Colobomycter vaughni, sp. nov. The discovery of C. vaughni at Richards Spur is important, because it reveals the presence of another member of the clade Lanthanosuchoidea in Oklahoma, making it the sixth to be found in the state. The large number of taxa from this clade found in Oklahoma suggests that during the Early Permian, this area of western Laurasia was the center of a radiation of small, predatory lanthanosuchoids.

The dromornithids were giant flightless birds endemic to Australia from the late Paleogene to the late Pleistocene. Dromornithids are generally considered to be divergent members of the Anseriformes, but they display many convergent features with extant ratites. In this study, we investigate Dromornis stirtoni from the Alcoota Local Fauna, a species for which little is known of its biology. We used traditional methods of comparative morphology, mass estimation, landmark-based morphometrics, and histological investigations to determine the presence of medullary bone, to assess the possible presence, form, and extent of sexual dimorphism in D. stirtoni. Two morphological groups were identified for each main leg element, differing primarily in relative robustness. Core samples from femora and tibiotarsi shafts revealed medullary bone in the less robust morph, indicating that these were females. Mass, as estimated by algorithms applied to our preferred measurement of least-shaft circumference of tibiotarsi, was significantly different between males (mean = 528 kg) and females (mean = 451 kg). Therefore, male D. stirtoni were more robust but not much taller than the females and challenge the elephant bird, Aepyornis maximus, for the title of the most massive bird to have existed. Sexual dimorphism in this largest of all dromornithids, therefore, was like that of extant Anseriformes. We infer long-term monogamy, mutual display, shared parental care, female incubation, and aggressive defense of nests in these birds. The techniques of geometric morphometrics applied in this study maximize the use of fragmentary material, helping to overcome the common paleontological challenge of limited sample sizes.

Alestidae is a clade of African characiform fishes including 19 extant genera and approximately 105 species that are known from Afro-Arabia, with records reported from the Eocene-Oligocene Jebel Qatrani Formation of Egypt, the Eocene Mahenge crater lake of Tanzania, and early Oligocene to Miocene sites on the Arabian Plate. Here we report the first record of alestid fishes from the late Oligocene Nsungwe Formation in the Rukwa Rift Basin of southwestern Tanzania. The Nsungwe alestid sample is composed of 92 teeth spanning a range of sizes and morphologies. Teeth are examined with regard to cusp number and organization, tooth position and replacement, and in the context of alestid jaw organization using modern, comparative representatives. Results suggest that at least two alestid taxa are represented in Nsungwe Formation localities. Hydrocynus teeth exhibit a single, conical cusp. Several of these specimens preserve a mesiodistally expanded crown and concave surface on the lingual aspect of the tooth. A second, unnamed taxon, with three morphological variants, is distinguished from Hydrocynus based on a multicuspid morphology of fully erupted teeth. The presence of these taxa in the late Oligocene of Africa below the equator provides key insights into the biogeography of the clade.

Despite over a hundred years of intense paleontological exploration, the terrestrial rocks of the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) Hell Creek Formation of eastern Montana are remarkable for the absence of fossil eggs. Here, we describe the first fossil egg and additional eggshell fragments from the formation. The two-layered structure of the smooth 1600-µm-thick eggshell of Belonoolithus garbani, oogen. et oosp. nov., permits assignment of the 6 cm × 8 cm egg to Theropoda. Additional theropod eggshells, Dimorphoolithus bennetti, oogen. et oosp. nov., closely resemble Tubercuoolithus choteauensis (incertae sedis) from the Campanian Two Medicine Formation of Montana, differing only in ornamentation. Therefore, we establish Tubercuoolithidae, oofam. nov., to accommodate both eggshell types. Other eggshell types include two varieties of Spheroolithus, as well as Testudoolithus and Krokolithes. Whereas B. garbani and D. bennetti are unique to the Hell Creek Formation, the other three oogenera also occur in the stratigraphically older Two Medicine and Judith River formations of Montana, and the Oldman Formation of southern Alberta, Canada.

The first fossil spookfish (Argentiniformes: Opisthoproctidae) is described from deposits of the middle-upper Miocene Kurasi Formation of Sakhalin Island, Russia. The fossil is placed in the family Opisthoproctidae because of the posterior position of its dorsal fin, along with a very small mouth and very long pelvic fin. It is referred further to the genus Macropinna, based on the placement of the anterior margin of the anal fin under the posterior part of dorsal fin, and a close correspondence in vertebra and fin ray counts and body proportions with the only living species, Macropinna microstoma Chapman, 1939. The great similarity between fossil and Recent barreleyes suggests that this Miocene form is a representative of the Recent species or a stem member of M. microstoma.

Decennatherium pachecoi Crusafont, 1952, is one of two giraffid species described from the Miocene of the Iberian Peninsula. This species is recovered exclusively from Vallesian faunas (MN9-10, late Miocene, 10–11 Ma). Despite being relatively well represented in the fossil record, except for the skull and ossicones, the complete vertebral column, and part of the upper dentition, its systematics and phylogenetic position among giraffids are the subject of debate. We update our knowledge of D. pachecoi, revising all Spanish material assigned to this species, as well as previously undescribed fossils. We reassess the systematics of Decennatherium, including its potential relationship with the second Iberian giraffid, the early Turolian Birgerbohlinia Crusafont, 1952, by means of the first cladistic analysis of the Giraffidae that includes Decennatherium together with the most relevant African and Eurasian taxa, both fossil and extant. Our results link Decennatherium with a ‘samothere’ clade, whereas Birgerbohlinia is nested within a ‘sivathere’ clade, thus refuting a previously assumed direct relationship between the two Spanish forms. Finally, we discuss some other possible finds of the genus Decennatherium in Greece, Turkey, and Iran.

The first nearly complete and articulated manus of the ground sloth Mylodon darwinii, from the upper Pleistocene of Argentina, is described. It shares similarities with Mylodonopsis ibseni from Brazil, including a cuneiform with a distinct pisiform facet, an obliquely concave ulnar facet, and a prominent distolateral process, as well as a gracile metacarpal III. It shares a flattened pisiform with Glossotherium robustum. The trapezoid is unique in the obliquely elongate proportions of its dorsal surface. Shapes of the articular facets indicate different functions in digits II and III, with the former having a greater range of motion and the latter greater stability at the joints. Clear arboreal or fossorial adaptations are absent. A phylogenetic analysis recovered M. darwinii as closely related to M. ibseni and agrees with larger phylogenetic analyses of sloths based on craniomandibular evidence. Our data support more than two mylodontine dispersal events to North America.

We describe Palaeomacrosemius thiollieri, gen. et sp. nov., a new genus of Macrosemiidae (Neopterygii: Ginglymodi), from the Upper Jurassic (late Kimmeridgian to early Tithonian) of the Solnhofen Archipelago (Germany) and Cerin (France). Palaeomacrosemius, gen. nov., is characterized primarily by the following features: presence of vertical scale rows that do not dichotomize dorsal to the lateral line (unlike members of the genus Macrosemius Agassiz); a long dorsal fin with 32–33 dorsal fin rays; and a smaller scale-free area immediately ventrolateral to the dorsal fin compared with Macrosemius. Small, hook-like spines located on the posterolateral border of the principal dorsal fin rays may have functioned in reproductive behavior. We also review the currently known species of Macrosemius (M. rostratus Agassiz and M. fourneti Thiollière) from the Upper Jurassic plattenkalk of southern Germany and Cerin, France. Macrosemius rostratus, which we here restrict to the German plattenkalk basins of Eichstätt and Solnhofen (Tithonian above the eigeltingense horizon), is mainly characterized by the presence of 37–39 dorsal fin rays, which are very long in adult specimens. Macrosemius fourneti is mainly characterized by the presence of 34–35 dorsal fin rays, which are broader in the posterior part of the fin. Although M. fourneti was previously known only from Cerin, France, we here describe it for the first time from the older plattenkalk of Brunn (southern Germany, late Kimmeridgian).

Early Eocene fluvial ichthyofaunas of Wyoming are relatively poorly known compared with the betterpreserved lake deposits of the Green River Formation. We describe the teleost fishes from a single floodplain locality in the main body of the Wasatch Formation that immediately predates the formation of Lake Gosiute, in the Washakie Basin of Wyoming. This assemblage was deposited during the Graybullian substage of the Wasatchian Stage, corresponding to the onset of the rapid climatic warming leading to the Early Eocene Climatic Optimum. In addition to a lepisosteiform and an amiid, the locality has a teleost ichthyofauna comprising Diplomystus (Ellimmichthyiformes), a gonorynchiform probably representing Notogoneus, amblyopsid-like percopsiforms that may represent up to three taxa, and perciforms among which are probably an indeterminate centrarchid and ‘Priscacara.’ The fauna demonstrates that many of the Green River Formation fish taxa were already present in fluvial environments prior to the formation of the Green River lakes, indicating that the subsequent climate warming had little effect on these fishes. Some of the elements recognized here as probably representing Notogoneus were previously recovered from Late Cretaceous deposits from Utah to Alberta, suggesting that this gonorynchid was wide-ranging in North American fluvial environments since Mesozoic times, as were several other taxa identified here. Furthermore, the ichthyofauna indicates that the depositional environment was well vegetated and well oxygenated. These waters were shallow, with gentle flow strengths, which, together with the high oxygen content, suggests that the sediments of the locality were deposited in small ponds connected to an active river system.

Chukimys favaloroi, new genus and species, is added to the past diversity of sigmodontine rodents, the largest subfamily of Neotropical mammals. It is based on a maxillary with the entire tooth row and both first and second lower molars collected in sediments of the Brochero Formation (Late Pliocene) that crop out in Córdoba Province, Argentina. The new genus represents a small rodent (about 40 g) and has a unique combination of traits, including a zygomatic plate with deeply excavated anterior border and conspicuous zygomatic spine, incisive foramen reaching the level of the protocone of the first upper molar, palate narrow and flat, molars moderately hypsodont, and the first lower molar four-rooted. The new sigmodontine shows similarities with several extant members of the tribes Phyllotini and Reithrodontini, as well as with the extinct Dankomys vorohuensis from the Pliocene of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The comparisons performed suggest that Chukimys has anatomical features related to omnivory and the incorporation of hard material in its diet. Chukimys is the first fossil genus of sigmodontine described from central Argentina and probably represents a new member of the currently monotypic tribe Reithrodontini.

The Hemingfordian North American Land Mammal Age is not well sampled, especially in the Pacific Northwest. Here we present both a description of a new fauna and two radiometric dates, 16.26 Ma and 16.44 Ma, constraining the Hawk Rim locality of central Oregon. Hawk Rim represents the first diverse late Hemingfordian fauna in the Northwest and is one of the stratigraphically lowest fossiliferous outcrops of the Mascall Formation. Much of Oregon was blanketed by Columbia River Flood Basalts during late Hemingfordian time, limiting not only outcrops but places for organisms to have survived. The site yields a taxonomically rich fauna sharing strong faunal similarity with the type locality of the Mascall but also containing taxa new to the formation and region. We describe occurrences of five genera of Artiodactyla, four genera of Perissodactyla, three genera of Rodentia, and six genera of Carnivora, with all but three new occurrences for the Hemingfordian of the Pacific Northwest. In particular, the carnivore fauna extends the geographic and temporal range of several carnivorans, and we describe a new hypercarnivorous mustelid, Watay tabutsigwii.

The Early Jurassic (Toarcian) actinopterygian Pachycormus is a basal taxon within Pachycormiformes, a Mesozoic marine neopterygian radiation that evolved an extreme ecomorph divergence between hyperspecialized ‘billfishlike’ macrocarnivores and gigantic suspension feeders, including the largest fish of all time. Current phylogenies place Pachycormus as an early member of the suspension-feeding lineage; however, species disparity renders character states uncertain and potential exists for considerable intraspecific variability. Given its importance for resolution of pachycormiform phylogenetic topology, we comprehensively reassessed Pachycormus fossils housed in collections across Europe and found that the proportional traits traditionally used to discriminate between species are actually consistent with an ontogenetic size morphocline. Our cladistic analyses further show that the monotypic senior synonym, Pachycormus macropterus, is a wildcard that manifests a mosaic of transitional states. This has significant implications for hypothesized Toarcian marine vertebrate provincialism because P. macropterus had a ubiquitous Boreal Tethyan distribution. Moreover, our tree-based palaeobiogeographical optimizations infer that the western Tethyan region was a pachycormiform dissemination center, with global dispersals occurring through transoceanic migration and invasion of epeiric basins.
