Population-based reference intervals (RIs) are vital tools used to characterize health and disease based on laboratory values. The science and statistical basis for RI generation have evolved over the past 50 yr. Current veterinary-specific guidelines by the American Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology exist for establishing RIs from nondomestic and wild animals. A list of 35 items that should be included during generation and publication of reference data was distilled from the currently available RI guidelines. The archives of five peer-reviewed journals were searched and 106 articles presenting laboratory reference data from nondomestic or wildlife species were identified and each reviewed by two authors to determine compliance with the list of 35 items. A compliance score was calculated as the number of articles that fulfilled the item out of the number where it would have been appropriate to fulfill the item. Most articles reported the number of reference individuals (compliance score 0.98), their partitioning demographics (compliance score 0.95), and sample collection and handling practices (compliance scores 0.97 and 0.96, respectively). Common deficiencies included omitting discussion of the validation status of the analytical methods for the species being evaluated (compliance score 0.12), documentation of use of exclusion criteria (compliance score 0.51), outlier detection (compliance score 0.43), appropriate statistical methods for the reference population (compliance score 0.34), and calculation and presentation of confidence intervals around the reference limits (compliance score 0.35). Compliance scores were not statistically different when stratified on the number of individuals in the largest and smallest evaluated group or the format of the article (full vs short format). Articles that cited RI generation guidelines fulfilled more of the required steps and provided a more complete description of their data (compliance score 0.74) than those that did not cite guidelines (compliance score 0.58). Additional attention to the science of and recommendations for RI generation is recommended to strengthen the utility of published data.

The housing of wild animals in managed care facilities requires attention to all aspects of husbandry. Diets of wild animals often differ in composition, consistency, and quantity when compared with those in managed care settings including zoos, rehabilitation facilities, and aquaria. It was hypothesized that dietary differences from wild versus managed care would be reflected in data of circulating fatty acids based on previous studies. The current study examined the effect of species and environment on fatty acid concentrations in two omnivorous species of chelonians: Eastern box turtles, Terrapene carolina carolina, and common snapping turtles, Chelydra serpentina, located in the wild and managed care. Whole blood was collected and placed on spot cards for analysis of 26 fatty acids in a total lipid fatty acid profile. The present research indicated that Eastern box turtles have significantly (P < 0.05) higher percentages of linoleic acid (18:2n6), eicosadienoic acid (20:2n6), and mead acid (20:3n9). Common snapping turtles have significantly (P < 0.05) higher percentages of myristic acid (14:0), dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (20:3n6), erucic acid (22:1n9), and n-6 docosapentaenoic acid (22:5n6). Environmental effects also were noted; wild turtles had higher percentages of α-linolenic acid (18:3n3), arachidic acid (20:0), eicosadienoic acid (20:2n6), and eicosatrienoic acid (20:3n3) (P < 0.05), whereas n-6 docosapentaenoic acid (22:5n6) was higher for the managed care group. Eicosadienoic acid (20:2n6), behenic acid; 22:0), adrenic acid (22:4n6), n-6 docosapentaenoic acid (22:5n6), and nervonic acid (24:1) were significantly different (P < 0.05) in species–environment interactions without any noted species or environment patterns. Fatty acids are useful for many important biological functions including proper immune system regulation, and therefore, the present research provides medically relevant data for reptile diagnostics. This research may help further improve diets of all chelonians kept in managed care, regardless of species.

Immersion in tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) is insufficient for euthanasia in at least one species of fish. The current study investigated the effectiveness of potassium chloride (KCl) to euthanize anesthetized koi (Cyprinus carpio). Twenty-eight healthy koi were anesthetized via immersion in 500 mg/L of buffered MS-222 for 10–12 min, manually removed to room air, and randomly administered 10 mEq/kg KCl (333 mg/ml) via one of three routes—intracardiac injection (IC) (n = 7), intracoelomic injection (ICe) (n = 7), or topical instillment over the gill filaments bilaterally (T) (n = 7)—or received no treatment (control, C) (n = 7). A Doppler ultrasonic flow detector was placed over the heart, and sounds were assessed continuously from immediately prior to treatment until 5 min posttreatment and every 5 min thereafter until Doppler sound cessation, resumption of operculation, or 30 min. Time to Doppler sound cessation or resumption of operculation was recorded. Doppler sound cessation occurred in 7/7 fish in IC (median 0.08, range 0–2.75 min) and 1/7 fish in T (10 min). In T, ICe, and C, 6/7, 7/7, and 7/7 fish, respectively, maintained Doppler sounds to 30 min. All fish in ICe (7/7) and C (7/7) resumed operculation with median (range) times of 22 (7–30) min and 16 (9–29) min from treatment, respectively. Intracardiac KCl at 10 mEq/kg rapidly ceases Doppler sounds and is a successful technique for euthanasia of anesthetized koi. Intracoelomic and topical KCl at 10 mEq/kg were not effective for euthanasia of koi.

A retrospective analysis of 40 extended (>2 hr) anesthetic events in eight lions (Panthera leo) and 32 tigers (Panthera tigris) was performed using a hierarchical linear growth curve model to assess the effects of anesthetic time, α-2 adrenoreceptor agonist dosages, administration of atipamezole, and biochemical parameters on rising plasma K⁺ concentrations. Hyperkalemia was first noted at a mean time of 187 min (range: 131–226 min), with time under anesthesia as a statistically significant predictor of K⁺ concentration (P < 0.0001). A significant two-way interaction between time and atipamezole administration (P = 0.0082) for rising K⁺ concentrations was demonstrated, indicating that administration of atipamezole can mitigate the rise in K⁺ concentrations. Administration of atipamezole beyond 150 min of anesthetic time was less effective in reducing K⁺ concentrations than if administered earlier. Electrocardiographic abnormalities were noted in eight animals, including three hyperkalemic individuals. Lions developed significantly greater plasma K⁺ concentrations than tigers (P = 0.0009) during anesthesia. No biochemical parameter was identified as a significant indicator of which individuals will develop hyperkalemia. Clinicians anesthetizing any large nondomestic felid should monitor electrolytes regularly during anesthetic events; consider early, partial- to full-dose reversal of α-2 agonists; and be prepared to correct potentially life-threatening electrocardiographic abnormalities resulting from hyperkalemia.

The efficacy, safety, physiologic effects, and reversibility of butorphanol-medetomidine-midazolam (BMM) immobilization were evaluated in black-footed cats (Felis nigripes) and compared between captive and wild animals. Nine captive and 14 wild black-footed cats were hand injected into an accessible hind limb muscle group with the BMM combination. The captive cats (captive group) received a lower dose of the combination (butorphanol, 0.25 ± 0.03 mg/kg; medetomidine, 0.06 ± 0.01 mg/kg; midazolam, 0.13 ± 0.02 mg/kg), whereas the wild cats received a higher dose (butorphanol, 0.53 ± 0.11 mg/kg, medetomidine, 0.13 ± 0.03 mg/kg, midazolam, 0.27 ± 0.05 mg/kg). Two capture methods were required to restrain the wild cats; previously collared cats were tracked and excavated out of their burrows during daylight hours (excavated group), whereas uncollared cats were randomly located using spotlights and pursued by a vehicle at night (pursued group). Inductions were rapid and no spontaneous arousals occurred. Mean arterial blood pressure in all cats was within normal limits for domestic cats. Initial rectal temperatures varied greatly among the groups, but decreased in all groups as the immobilization progressed. In the pursued animals, heart rates and respiratory rates were initially elevated. All cats had moderate hypoxemia, hypocapnia, and metabolic acidosis. Intramuscular administration of naltrexone, atipamezole, and flumazenil resulted in rapid, uncomplicated recoveries. BMM is thus a safe, effective immobilizing drug combination for both captive and wild black-footed cats, but higher doses are required in wild animals. The capture methods exerted a greater influence on the physiology of the immobilized animals than did the doses of the drugs used. Although this drug combination can be used safely to immobilize black-footed cats, supplemental oxygen should always be available for use, especially in pursued animals due to hypoxia.

Between December 2002 and September 2017, 125 anesthetic procedures involving free-living and orphaned captive mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) were performed in the Virunga Massif and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in East-Central Africa. Of these 125 immobilizations, 114 records were complete enough for inclusion into this study. Anesthetic and physiologic data from these 114 cases were analyzed, of which 57 used medetomidine–ketamine and 57 used dexmedetomidine–ketamine administered intramuscularly. With the use of estimated weights, the mean induction dosage (mg/kg ± SD) for medetomidine was 0.033 ± 0.003 (n = 42), for dexmedetomidine 0.018 ± 0.005 (n = 53), and for ketamine 3.66 ± 0.95 (n = 95). Mean time from injection of induction dose to recumbency was 6.8 ± 3.1 min (n = 74). Atipamezole was administered intramuscularly to reverse anesthesia. First signs of recovery occurred at 5.0 ± 4.0 min, and full recovery was 19.0 ± 17.0 min after administration of the reversal agent. No significant differences in physiologic parameters or anesthetic time variables were noted between healthy and unhealthy individuals. Mean heart rate was 72.0 ± 17.6 beats/min (n = 83) and mean oxygen saturation was 96.5% ± 4.2 (n = 62). Mean respiratory rate was 27 ± 9 breaths/min (n = 84) and mean body temperature 36.6°C ± 1.2 (n = 61). The current protocol has several advantages for field use in this species given its quick induction, few observed side effects, and ability to reverse so that the animal can return more quickly to its social group.

The anatomy and physiology of armadillos make anesthetic procedures and the placement of telemetry devices challenging. From June 2011 to November 2019, a total of 73 free-living armadillos were captured and anesthetized in the Pantanal, Brazil. Giant (Priodontes maximus), six-banded (Euphractus sexcinctus), southern naked-tailed (Cabassous unicinctus), and nine-banded (Dasypus novemcinctus) armadillos were divided into two groups. In group 1, 30 armadillos were anesthetized for collection of biological samples, body measurements, and placement of a microchip tag. Anesthetic combination BDM was applied: butorphanol tartrate, detomidine hydrochloride, and midazolam hydrochloride, each at 0.1 mg/kg. In group 2, 43 armadillos received ketamine hydrochloride at 10 mg/kg 20 min after BDM injection, and intra-abdominal radio transmitters were surgically implanted. The transmitter was inserted freely into the abdominal cavity. Vital signs were monitored during anesthesia every 10 min and varied within species and between groups. Rectal temperature varied from 33.1 ± 1.36 to 35.34 ± 1.21°C, heart rate (beats/min) from 19 ± 2.14 to 84.71 ± 9.25, respiratory rate (breaths/min) from 11 ± 4.16 to 31 ± 2.82, and oxygen saturation values (SPO2%) from 84.17% ± 2.39 to 98% ± 1.20. Both groups received the antagonist combination NYF: naloxone hydrochloride (0.02 mg/kg), yohimbine hydrochloride (0.125 mg/kg), and flumazenil (0.01 mg/kg). Recovery varied according to intravenous or intramuscular injection from 2 ± 4 to 8.08 ± 2.93 min respectively. BDM protocol was considered satisfactory and provided enough time to complete the procedures (60 ± 85 to 133.20 ± 9.12 min) according to the species and group. Ketamine added to the BDM provided enough time and a surgical plane of anesthesia (97 ± 22 to 137 ± 39.5 min). The surgical procedure technique chosen did not appear to have a negative impact on armadillos studied. Implantable transmitters provide a cost-effective method for long-term monitoring of wild individuals.

Infection with Yersinia pseudotuberculosis can be difficult to diagnose and treat successfully. Twenty-four cases from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo were identified between 2001 and 2019. Husbandry, medical, and postmortem records for six primates, 10 artiodactyls, and eight birds were reviewed to identify common clinical signs and gross lesions. Most cases occurred during the winter; however, an outbreak in four primates occurred during the summer following a period of stress associated with increased ambient noise and activity. Common clinical signs included lethargy (6/6 primates, 4/10 artiodactyls, 4/8 birds) or death without premonitory signs (3/10 artiodactyls, 4/8 birds). Once clinical signs were observed, disease progressed quickly. Poor condition was common in mammals (6/6 primates, 9/10 artiodactyls), but often went undetected until postmortem examination. Neurological signs occurred in three of six primates. Diarrhea and anorexia were uncommon in all animals. Hepatitis was observed in all groups (4/6 primates, 2/10 artiodactyls, 4/8 birds), mesenteric lymphadenomegaly was common in mammals (4/6 primates, 8/10 artiodactyls), and gastroenteritis was common in artiodactyls (7/10). Erythematous, punctate rashes, which have only been reported with yersiniosis in humans, were present in three of six primates. Bacterial cultures from the liver in primates and birds or enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes in artiodactyls were often diagnostic. All isolates were susceptible to marbofloxacin, oxytetracycline, streptomycin, ceftazidime, amoxicillin clavulanic acid, trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole, azithromycin, and doxycycline, and resistant to clindamycin. Histopathology and Perl's Prussian blue stains were performed on available liver samples (n = 18). Intracellular hemosiderin was present in 17 of 18 cases. Additional research is needed to determine if there is a relationship between hemosiderosis and yersiniosis.

Improperly managed care conditions for reptiles can lead to clinical problems, including those of nutritional origin. A diagnostic tool to aid in the assessment of hepatic lipidosis is warranted. Evaluation of attenuation using quantitative computed tomography has a variety of indications in animals and permits the standardization of hepatic computed tomography (CT) reference values, aiding in the diagnosis of lipidosis. The objective of this paper was to estimate hepatic quantitative CT reference values for boas because of the lack of data in the literature for this species. CT scans were performed in 13 boas (Boa constrictor constrictor): 5 under managed care and 8 that were free ranging. Results show that the mean hepatic attenuation in the captive boa group was well below the mean for the free-ranging animals (P < 0.05) with respective values of 48.78 ± 6.57 and 61.76 ± 7.11 HU. These results suggest an influence of managed care on liver attenuation. These results were observed despite the lack of clinical or laboratory changes. This imaging technique is useful to detect early hepatic changes; however, clinical relevance is unknown at this point. Further studies and standardization of species-specific values for hepatic quantitative CT would contribute to better understanding of the physiologic, physiopathologic, environmental, and nutritional processes.

Improvements in husbandry, veterinary care, and nutrition have led to increased longevity of animals in human care, including elephants. The goal of this study was to collect and synthesize information pertaining to geriatric elephant medicine, management, husbandry, and nutrition. An electronic survey was created and distributed to American Association of Zoo Veterinarians members through an online link. A total of 61 responses were received from veterinarians, nutritionists, and elephant managers with data encompassing 314 elephants, of which 142 were geriatric (over 40 years old) and 51 were on their final set of molars. Following the initial survey, willing respondents were contacted for follow-up interviews. Osteoarthritis, foot disease, and colic were the most commonly reported diseases, and flunixin meglumine and phenylbutazone were the analgesics most often used. Respondents described diseases treated, husbandry changes specific for older animals, welfare assessments and quality of life monitoring, nutritional modifications for dental attrition, a variety of integrative medicine modalities, and unique cases. It is the hope that the information identified in this study can be used to improve treatment, management practices, and overall welfare for geriatric elephants.

There are no published plasma biochemistry reference intervals for any species within the order Gaviiformes, which includes the common loon (Gavia immer). Because of their unique classification and lack of close taxonomic relatives, species-specific values for clinical data in loons are needed. This study determined reference intervals for plasma biochemical values in adult common loons, and reference intervals for protein electrophoresis values in both adult and juvenile common loons. Healthy, wild adult (n = 148, age >3 yr) and juvenile (n = 31, age 4–12 wk) common loons were sampled on freshwater summer breeding territories at study sites across North America. Plasma biochemical analytes included glucose (Glu), total calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, chloride, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), uric acid, cholesterol, triglycerides, creatine kinase, γ-glutamyl transferase, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase, amylase, and bile acids. Protein electrophoresis data included albumin to globulin ratio (A: G), prealbumin, albumin, α1-globulin, α2-globulin, β-globulin, and γ-globulin. Adult females had significantly higher Glu, ALP, and BUN than adult males. Juvenile loons had higher β-globulins than adults, whereas adults had higher α1-globulins. Establishment of complete reference intervals will improve clinical assessment of captive loons, and allow researchers to better understand the health of wild loons in response to the multiple environmental stressors faced by these species.

Zoos harbor large collections of diverse species, aiding in both conservation and education, as well as research in multiple scientific fields. However, the most common causes of death in zoo animals around the world remain unclear because few extensive reports or reviews are published on this topic. This information could greatly improve preventive veterinary medicine in zoologic gardens. This study provides a retrospective overview of the causes of death of animals from the Ljubljana Zoo in the years 2005–2015. During this period, a total of 353 animals were submitted for necropsy, of which 244 were mammals, 85 were birds, and 25 were reptiles. The causes of deaths were divided into infectious diseases (38%), dysfunctions of individual organs (20%), traumas (13%), parasitosis (7%), reproductive disorders (6%), metabolic disorders (3%), neoplastic disease (4%), and intoxications (4%). In some cases, the cause of death was unable to be determined (7%), most commonly because of autolysis of the body. The results of this retrospective study bring a general overview of the epizootiologic situation in the Ljubljana Zoo over an 11-yr period and valuable information to other zoos to optimize preventative plans and diagnostics.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a disorder of unknown cause, in which new bone forms in soft tissues attached to the skeleton. Originally described in humans, in whom it is quite common, it is usually asymptomatic. New bone may completely bridge across joints, especially in the spine. However, it can be difficult to distinguish from diseases such as spondyloarthritis and spondylosis. With safer and increased use of radiography in diagnosis, the unfamiliar skeletal changes of asymptomatic DISH may now be coincidentally revealed during investigation of other disorders and result in misdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment. There have been case reports of its occurrence in great apes, but this is the first study to illustrate its appearances in a series of 11 skeletons of western and eastern lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla and Gorilla beringei graueri) from zoos in Europe and the United States. The study combines a review of available clinical and postmortem records with examination of the skeletons and radiologic investigation, such as computed tomography (CT). The results indicate that the disorder is probably common in older (>30 yr) captive gorillas, but that it is asymptomatic. It was not symptomatic during life in any of these animals. Several cases had unexpected features, such as extensive involvement of the thorax and extra-articular sacroiliac and tibiofibular joint fusions that are not typical in humans. By illustrating these skeletons, the study should aid differentiation of DISH from spondylosis (syn spondylosis deformans) and spondyloarhritis. It illustrates those features that are atypical of human DISH. CT scanning is valuable in such cases for examining diagnostically important areas such as sacroiliac joints. Increased awareness of DISH should help with understanding its cause, both in gorillas and humans.

Fifty-eight frozen postmortem lung and air sac samples were collected from penguins housed at 21 zoological collections throughout the United Kingdom, from 2007 to 2018. Aspergillus fumigatus, a significant respiratory pathogen of penguins in captivity, was isolated from 15 of the 22 penguins with gross lesions. Of the penguins with gross lesions of aspergillosis at postmortem examination, the pathogen was cultured from 63.6% (15 of 22) of frozen samples. Aspergillus fumigatus was cultured from 2.7% (1 of 36) of tissues collected from penguins without gross lesions at postmortem. Additionally, of 18 fresh samples that cultured A. fumigatus at the time of postmortem, 15 samples (83%) yielded isolates that were successfully cultured from frozen tissue. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) data demonstrated that all isolates were susceptible to terbinafine and voriconazole, and all were resistant to itraconazole, using published MIC cutoff values. Comparison isolates from fresh tissues had identical antimicrobial susceptibility to isolates from the same tissues after being frozen. This study demonstrates that A. fumigatus can be isolated from frozen respiratory tissues of penguins, even after freezing for more than 10 yr.

Amputation surgery in pinniped rehabilitation centers is a feasible procedure when animals are presented with open fractures, osteomyelitis, and/or infectious arthritis of the flippers that appear to be refractory to medical treatment. From 2011 to 2017, the Sealcentre Pieterburen in The Netherlands admitted 3,775 seals for rehabilitation. Of these, 37 individuals presented clinical and radiologic signs of bone abnormalities indicative of osteomyelitis or infectious arthritis refractory to medical treatment. Seven cases resulted in euthanasia, and 30 cases underwent amputation surgery. The surgical procedure involved amputation of part of a flipper (24; two animals twice) or of a complete flipper (eight). All procedures were done under general anesthesia except one that was performed with local anesthesia, and all 30 animals were released. In two cases, the osteomyelitis presented with the rare Totenlade phenomenon, a sequestrum surrounded by new periosteal bone formation. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the outcome of the operative treatment of osteomyelitis and infectious arthritis in the flippers of harbor (Phoca vitulina) and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) during this 6-yr period.

Pathogens such as herpesviruses, Mycoplasma spp., and frog virus 3-like ranavirus have contributed to morbidity and mortality in many species of free-living and zoo-maintained chelonians. However, their prevalence is understudied in Blanding's turtles (Emydoidea blandingii) across North America. To assess the presence of these pathogens, Blanding's turtles were sampled in Lake County, Illinois, in 2017 (N = 213) and 2018 (N = 160). DNA from cloacal-oral swabs was assayed for four ranaviruses, three Mycoplasma spp., two Salmonella spp., Emydoidea herpesvirus 1 (EBHV1), and tortoise intranuclear coccidiosis (TINC) using a multiplex quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Pathogens were most frequently detected in adult turtles (n = 25) and rarely in subadults (n = 2) or juveniles (n = 1). EBHV1 was detected in 22 individuals with no clinical signs of illness, most (n = 20) occurring in the month of May (P < 0.0001). EBHV1 cases at one study site significantly clustered within the same 0.64-km area from 17 to 22 May 2017 (P < 0.0001) and 14 to 15 May 2018 (P = 0.0006). Individuals were rarely positive for Salmonella typhimurium (n = 6). A novel Mycoplasma sp. sharing high homology with other emydid Mycoplasma spp. was detected in one turtle with nasal discharge. Neither TINC nor any ranaviruses were detected. Continued monitoring of this population and habitat may facilitate identification of risk factors for pathogen occurrence and clarify the impact of infectious diseases on Blanding's turtle conservation outcomes.

A flock of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulates) was purchased from a licensed breeder and quarantined at a zoologic facility within the United States in 2016. Following 82 deaths within the flock, the remaining 66 birds were depopulated because of ongoing clinical salmonellosis despite treatment. Gross necropsy was performed on all 66 birds. Histopathologic examination was performed on 10 birds identified with gross lesions and 10 birds without. Pathologic findings were most often observed in the liver, kidney, and spleen. Lesions noted in the livers and spleens were consistent with published reports of salmonellosis in psittacine species. Multisystemic changes associated with septicemia were not noted, most likely because of antibiotic intervention before euthanasia. Of the 20 budgerigars evaluated by histopathology, six had large basophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies within tubular epithelia in a portion of the kidneys. Electronic microscopy, next-generation sequencing, Sanger sequencing, and phylogenetic analyses were used to identify and categorize the identified virus as a novel siadenovirus strain BuAdV-1 USA-IA43444-2016. The strain was 99% similar to budgerigar adenovirus 1 (BuAdV-1), previously reported in Japan, and to a psittacine adenovirus 5 recently identified in a U.S. cockatiel. Salmonella typhimurium carriers were identified via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and bacterial culture and compared with viral carriers identified via PCR. Inclusion bodies and Salmonella detection were significant in birds with gross lesions versus those without; however, there was no correlation between budgerigars positive with siadenovirus by PCR and concurrent Salmonella infection. Identifying subclinical siadenovirus strain BuAdV-1 USA-IA43444-2016 infection in this flock significantly differs from a previous report of clinical illness in five budgerigars resulting in death caused by BuAdV-1 in Japan. S. typhimurium remains a significant pathogen in budgerigars, and zoonotic concerns prompted depopulation to mitigate the public health risks of this flock.

Sarcoptic mange epidemics can have long-lasting impacts on susceptible wildlife populations, potentially contributing to local population declines and extirpation. Since 2013, there have been 460 reported cases of sarcoptic mange in an urban population of endangered San Joaquin kit foxes (Vulpes macrotis mutica) in Bakersfield, CA, with many of them resulting in fatality. As part of a multifaceted response to mitigate mange-caused mortalities and reduce this conservation threat, a 2-yr randomized field trial was conducted to assess the efficacy of long-acting flumethrin collars against sarcoptic mange in kit foxes. Thirty-five kit foxes living in a high-density population on a college campus were captured, examined, administered selamectin, and each fox randomly assigned to either receive a flumethrin collar placed within a VHF radio collar or a VHF radio collar without flumethrin. The survival and mange-infestation status of study animals was monitored via radio telemetry, remote cameras, and periodic recapture examinations and compared among treated and control kit foxes using a Cox proportional hazards model. The average time to onset of mange for treated kit foxes (176 days) was similar to controls (171 days) and treatment with flumethrin did not significantly reduce mange risk for all kit foxes. Kit foxes that had a mild mange infestation at the beginning of the study were four times more likely to develop mange again, regardless of flumethrin treatment, compared with kit foxes that had no signs at initial recruitment. This study demonstrates an approach to evaluating population-level protection and contributes to the limited literature on efficacy, safety, and practicality of acaricides in free-ranging wildlife.

The aim of this study was to objectively evaluate the biological variation of healthy Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) hematology and biochemistry parameters, therefore enabling evidence-based clinical decision-making to improve patient management. Ten clinically healthy elephants had blood samples collected weekly for 5 wk under standardized conditions. The analytical, between- and within-individual variation, index of individuality, and reference change values were calculated using previously reported methods. Large between-individual variation and small within-individual variation for almost all parameters indicated that individual normal values should be used for interpreting blood results from Asian elephants.

Spontaneous ovulation has been identified in several wild felid species and domestic cats previously thought to undergo only induced ovulation. Two studies have assessed ovulation patterns in tigers (Panthera tigris) and have not found evidence of spontaneous ovulation in this species. However, uterine pathology typically associated with prolonged progesterone exposure has been identified in unbred tigers, suggesting spontaneous ovulation occurs. Ovaries from 47 tigers were reviewed with histologic examination. The presence or lack of active corpora lutea was documented and compared with social housing conditions for each animal. Social housing categories were as follows: female housed alone, female housed with other females, and female housed with at least one male. Active corpora lutea were identified in 66% (10/15) of females housed alone, 85% (6/7) of females housed with other females, and 58% of females housed with a male. A chi-squared test found the presence of active corpora lutea was independent of social housing condition. These results offer strong evidence of spontaneous ovulation in tigers. This finding suggests that a luteal control protocol with an early follicular inhibition agent may improve assisted reproduction efforts and supports spaying nonreproductive or postreproductive female tigers to reduce the rate of uterine infections.

Acute-phase proteins (APP) are the foundation to the innate immune response and valuable biomarkers that increase with inflammation, infection, neoplasia, stress, and trauma.^2,4,16 Little is known about the acute-phase response in cetaceans and if these proteins can be used for health monitoring in individuals and free-ranging populations. The purpose of this study was to characterize serum concentrations of haptoglobin (Hp) and serum amyloid A (SAA), as well as electrophoretic profiles of common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in free-ranging (n = 33) and professional care (n = 27) settings. Results were correlated to commonly utilized inflammatory indices including erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), fibrinogen, total white blood cell count (WBC), and absolute neutrophil count. SAA levels, measured with a dolphin-specific enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), were significantly higher (P = 0.05) in free-ranging dolphins (mean = 4.26; SE = 1.12) when compared with those under professional care (mean = 1.82; SE = 0.45). For dolphins under professional care, a statistically significant correlation was identified between ESR and Hp (P < 0.001; r = 0.69), ESR and SAA (P < 0.001; r = 0.67), fibrinogen and Hp (P = 0.001; r = 0.58), and fibrinogen and SAA (P = 0.002; r = 0.56). In addition, there was a significant correlation between WBC and SAA (P = 0.01; r = 0.38) and absolute neutrophil count and SAA (P = 0.04; r = 0.32). There were no significant correlations between study variables observed in free-ranging dolphins. The variable correlation of APPs with commonly utilized inflammatory indices demonstrates that these proteins are independent measures of inflammation with unique sensitivity, specificity, and timeline of expression. The results of this study contribute to improved health monitoring of dolphins and have the potential to assist in identification of compromised health.

The red wolf (Canis rufus) is a critically endangered North American canid, with surviving conspecifics divided between a captive breeding population and a reintroduced free-ranging population. The goal of this study was to assess the prevalence of selected vector-borne pathogens in captive red wolves. Whole blood samples were collected from 35 captive red wolves. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays were performed on extracted DNA to identify infection by Trypanosoma cruzi and vector-borne organisms within the following genera: Anaplasma, Babesia, Bartonella, Ehrlichia, Mycoplasma, Neoehrlichia, Neorickettsia, and Rickettsia. All red wolves sampled were PCR-negative for all tested organisms. These pathogens are unlikely to constitute threats to red wolf conservation and breeding efforts under current captive management conditions. The results of this study establish a baseline that may facilitate ongoing disease monitoring in this species.

The aim of this study was to screen for cardiac disease and report normal echocardiographic variables from a managed population of the African painted dog (Lycaon pictus; APD). The study included six male adult APDs under managed care with no evidence of significant structural cardiac disease. Echocardiography was performed with APD maintained under anesthesia with a combination of midazolam, butorphanol, and inhaled isoflurane. All animals underwent a full physical examination and two-dimensional (2D), M-mode, and Doppler echocardiography using standard views. Left ventricular volumes were calculated using the Simpson's method of discs. Medians with ranges were reported for the echocardiographic variables. No valvular structural abnormalities were noted. Trace mitral regurgitation was documented in five of six APD, trace tricuspid regurgitation in three of six, and mild pulmonic regurgitation in all APD. No aortic regurgitation was noted. Standard M-mode measurements fell within the normal ranges for allometrically scaled M-mode cardiac measurements for normal adult domestic dogs (Canis familiaris). Two-dimensional measurements were comparable with that of domestic dogs with similar body weight. The study demonstrates a similarity in cardiac size and function compared with normal adult domestic dogs and provides baseline echocardiographic variables for investigation of cardiac health in other populations of APDs in the future.

Sloths are xenarthrans from Central and South America with a highly adapted morphophysiology. Five of the six known species of sloths are found in Brazil, among which Bradypus torquatus (maned three-toed sloth) is considered a vulnerable species by International Union for Conservation of Nature. Nevertheless, knowledge on health and disease of sloths is very scarce, thus this study aimed to describe macroscopic and microscopic findings in 36 Brazilian sloths. The most common findings included iron storage disorder, probable bacterial pneumonia, gastric and intestinal nematode parasitism, and a presumptive diagnosis of systemic mastocytosis.

This case series describes hepatocellular neoplasms in 10 Nile lechwe (Kobus megaceros) at two separate zoological institutions in Florida. Histologically, the neoplasms were classified as hepatocellular carcinoma (n = 7), hepatocellular adenoma (n = 2), and hepatobiliary carcinoma (n = 1). Common clinical signs were nonspecific and included thin body condition (n =7), lethargy (n =6), lameness (n =3), and acute recumbency (n =5). Four males and six females were affected, and the mean age at death was 12.7 yr with a range of 4–18 yr. All cases were diagnosed postmortem, and metastasis to various sites, including lung, lymph nodes, and omentum, was found in 40% of cases (n = 4). A single case of hepatocellular carcinoma in a Nile lechwe was described in 2007; however, this is the first reported series of neoplasms in Reduncinae. The pathogenesis behind the development of hepatocellular neoplasms in Nile lechwe has not yet been identified.

Measurements of intraocular pressure (IOP) and tear production are key components of ophthalmic examination. Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) were anesthetized using either tiletamine-zolazepam (TZ; 2 mg/kg) combined with medetomidine (TZM; 0.02 mg/kg), or, TZ alone (6mg/kg). Tear production was lower (P = 0.03) with TZM (5.63 ± 6.22 mm/min; n = 16) than with TZ (11.13 ± 4.63 mm/min; n = 8). Mean IOP, measured using rebound tonometry in an upright body position (n = 8) was 18.74 ± 3.01 mm Hg, with no differences between right and left eyes. However, positioning chimpanzees in left lateral recumbency (n = 27) resulted in higher IOP in the dependent (left) eye (24.77 ± 4.49 mm Hg) compared to the nondependent (right) eye (22.27 ± 4.65 mm Hg) of the same animal (P < 0.0001). These data indicate medetomidine anesthesia markedly lowers tear production in chimpanzees, and that body position should be taken into consideration when performing rebound tonometry.

Sarcoptic mange continues to impact free-ranging mammal populations, including the American black bear (Ursus americanus). Administration of a single oral dose of fluralaner may be a viable treatment option for captive and free-ranging black bears affected by mange. This novel ectoparasitic in the isoxazoline class acts as an inhibitor of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-gated chloride channels and l-glutamate–gated chloride channels (GluCls) and is commercially available in the United States as a flea and tick preventative medication for domestic dogs and cats. Pharmacokinetic parameters of fluralaner were evaluated in clinically healthy American black bear cubs (n = 10) administered a single oral dose of fluralaner at a targeted minimum dose of 25 mg/kg. Blood was collected at 24 hr and 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, and 70 days, and harvested plasma was analyzed for drug concentration using high-performance liquid chromatography. The average half-life (K_e t_1/2) was determined to be 4.9 days, which is shorter than that published in domestic dogs. It was estimated that the average drug withdrawal time is approximately 64–72 days in this species.

Neoplastic diseases have rarely been reported in the family Pteropodidae, and primary malignant renal neoplasms are generally uncommon across animal species. This case series describes four cases of primary renal neoplasia: three renal cell carcinomas and one nephroblastoma in three species of pteropodid bats, specifically large flying foxes (Pteropus vampyrus, n = 2), straw-colored fruit bat (Eidolon helvum, n = 1), and a little golden-mantled flying fox (Pteropus pumilus, n = 1). Two of the cases were diagnosed antemortem using ultrasonography, computed tomography, and cytology; and one of these bats with a renal cell carcinoma was treated successfully with a unilateral nephrectomy. The remaining two cases were diagnosed at necropsy.

Oral disease, such as endodontic disease and macropod progressive periodontal disease (MPPD), which can progress to chronic alveolar osteomyelitis (CAO), have been identified as a common source of morbidity and mortality in captive macropods. This case series reviews the diagnosis and treatment of dental disease in eight captive Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus) over the course of an 8-yr period (2011–2019) in a zoological collection. Two wallabies were treated at four separate times, for a total of 14 anesthetized dental surgical procedures. Two wallabies died after treatment for dental disease. Endodontic disease, MPPD, and CAO were all identified and treated with extraction. Cases in which disease was identified early and treated aggressively had a good outcome with no return of clinical signs in the affected area. Several cases of extensive CAO were treated successfully with extraction and extensive debridement. One wallaby developed immune-mediated anemia, a suspected adverse drug reaction associated with prolonged administration of intravenous clindamycin.

One adult leopard (Panthera pardus) and five adult tigers (Panthera tigris) presented with a range of nonspecific clinical signs, including lethargy (6/6), mobility deficits (4/6), and hyporexia (3/6). Hematology and biochemistry revealed a hyperproteinemia characterized by hyperglobulinemia (4/6), hepatocellular enzyme activity increases (3/6), azotemia (3/6), leukocytosis (2/6), hyperbilirubinemia (2/6), or a combination of conditions. Further diagnostics and management varied with the presenting signs and clinicopathological findings, including supportive care, diagnostic imaging, and blastomyces urine antigen analyses. Two animals died, and four were euthanatized. Postmortem findings included granulomatous pneumonia (6/6), fibrinous pleural effusion (3/ 6), pericardial effusion (2/6), and diffuse icterus (1/6). Histopathology revealed round to oval structures with a thin clear wall and purple inclusions within cells of the mononuclear phagocyte system, consistent with Histoplasma capsulatum, in each animal. Disseminated histoplasmosis was found in five cases, with organisms present in the lung (5/5), liver (3/5), lymph nodes (3/5), spleen (2/5), bone marrow (2/5), thyroid (1/5), tongue (1/ 5), kidney (1/5), or a combination of organs. One tiger was found to have pulmonary histoplasmosis without evidence of disseminated infection. On the basis of clinical and pathological findings, histoplasmosis was diagnosed. This case series illustrates the difficulties in antemortem diagnosis of histoplasmosis on the basis of complete blood count, serum biochemistry profile, and antigen testing and underscores that histoplasmosis should be considered a differential diagnosis in any felid presenting with nonspecific clinical signs in endemic areas.

Follicular thyroid hyperplasia was diagnosed in nine out of 32 (28%) marine tropical teleosts housed in a public aquarium over a 9.5-mo period. These proliferative lesions were considered to be the cause of death in five of these fish. Iodine concentration was undetectable in nonozonized water (<0.005 mg/L), suggesting that an environmental iodine deficiency was the cause of these hyperplastic thyroid lesions. The only significant modification in the husbandry was a change, 18 mo before the first case, of the commercial salt mix brand used to make artificial seawater. The iodine content in this replacement salt mix was five times lower than that of the salt mix used before. This case series suggests that the iodine concentration in this new salt mix was insufficient to maintain thyroid homeostasis in reef teleosts under the husbandry provided in this institution.

The electroencephalogram (EEG) waveform can predictably change with depth of anesthesia, and algorithms such as the Patient State index (PSi) have been developed to convert the waveform into a user-friendly objective reading of anesthetic depth. In this study, PSi values were measured in 10 captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) during three phases of an anesthetic event. Phase 1 included sedation with dexmedetomidine, midazolam, and ketamine. Phase 2 started with administration of an α-2 antagonist and isoflurane. Phase 3 started with discontinuing isoflurane and ended with spontaneous movement and extubation. Initial PSi readings for phase 1 were high at 74.5 ± 12.2 (mean ± SD), before declining to 24.1 ± 5.3 for the remainder of the phase. Phase 2 PSi values were recorded as 21.4 ± 5.4 and then climbed during phase 3. Spontaneous movement was recorded at PSi values of 72 to 79. Electroencephalographic monitoring via PSi was successfully performed during three phases of anesthesia in the chimpanzees and was consistent with human values reported during general anesthesia. This paper serves as a preliminary investigation into EEG monitoring of chimpanzees, and further work is needed for its validation.
