A small bat with unique frosting of the hair dorsally and ventrally, it is 1 of about 100 species of Myotis worldwide and 1 of 12 species of Myotis in South America. It is one of the most widely distributed species in the genus occurring from southern Mexico to Argentina in diverse habitats generally at elevations below 500 m.
