The genus is characterized by a radial corolla with auriculate petals; five stamens; reduced ovule number; a straight hypanthium; indehiscent, flattened, and sutural-winged fruits; persistent bracts and bracteoles; leaflets with a papillate abaxial epidermis; and ovate to ovate-elliptic markedly striate stipules.
