Callianassa crassa Rathbun, 1919, a fossil thalassinid shrimp from the Miocene of Panama was preoccupied by Callianassa crassa A. Milne Edwards, 1870 from the Eocene of France; therefore, Glaessner (1929) renamed it Callianassa rathbunae. I have recently discovered that Callianassa (Callichirus) rathbunae Schmitt, 1935, a living species from the West Atlantic, is a junior primary homonym of Callianassa rathbunae Glaessner, 1929. Schmitt's species is now assigned to a different genus, NeocallichirusSakai, 1988 (see Manning and Felder, 1991). Therefore, the new replacement name Neocallichirus maryae, for the late Mary J. Rathbun of the United States National Museum, is here proposed for Neocallichirus rathbunae (Schmitt, 1935).
