Abstract

The Carcinological Collection of the División Zoología Invertebrados, Museo de La Plata (FCNyM UNLP) currently contains 2446 lots, of which 124 represent type material. There is a total of 162 batches corresponding to parasitic crustaceans. Six orders are represented in the collection and recorded here: Arguloida, Cyclopoida, Siphonostomatoida, Harpacticoida, Isopoda, and the infraclass Rizocephala, belonging to four classes of the Suphylum Crustacea. The species names are listed in systematical order, and the type locality, collection number, current taxonomic status and original bibliographic reference are given. Host and site of infection are also provided.

INTRODUCTION

The Invertebrate Collections of the Museo de La Plata (MLP) of the Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo, Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina, like many other natural history collections, constitute a significant source of information on the non-insect invertebrate biodiversity of Argentina. It was therefore found useful to provide an updated list of the species in this collection. The Carcinological Collection, with approximately 2500 lots, comprises both historical material dating back to the late nineteenth century, and recent material. The collection originated with the investigations of Drs Maximiliano Birabén and Raúl A. Ringuelet. The first lots are from 1896-1897. Since then, the collection has grown thanks to many researchers, students and community members (Díaz et al., 2017). The collection has a total of 162 lots of parasitic crustaceans, 41 of which concern type specimens and 121 non-type material. The province of Buenos Aires is the region best represented, followed by Córdoba, with a large number of lots, and then by Patagonian coasts. Most of the parasites in the Carcinological Collection were collected on the body surface, in the gills, and in the nostrils of bony freshwater fish while a smaller number were found parasitizing invertebrates.

All collection records are digitalized in a flat database. Approximately half of the records are identified to genus or species level, and these are currently available in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) database (Damborenea, 2017).

Diaz et al. (2017) listed the type specimens housed in the Carcinological Collection of Museo de La Plata. Here, we present an update of the list of type specimens and a list of voucher parasite crustaceans housed in the same collection.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The collection is organized in lots. Parasite specimens are stored in glass containers in 70% ethanol and as permanent and semi-permanent slide preparations. Wet lots are arranged in a special storage room shared with other Invertebrate Zoology collections. This storage room has a forced air system for ventilation, an electrical system protecting against vapors, and fire extinguishers. All the material is available for consultation. Unless otherwise stated, all the material is in good condition.

In case of type material each entry includes: the name of the taxon with its author(s) and year of publication, host for parasite species, indicating species, author(s), and principal taxonomic group in brackets, locality including country, province or state, department, specific locality, coordinates, site of infestation in parasite species, type status (holotype/syntype/paratype), number and sex of the specimens, MLP-Cr catalog number, type categories following articles 73-75 of the ICZN (1999), current taxonomic status, remarks when necessary, reference(s) of the original descriptions and those that mention type specimens of the MLP Carcinological Collection. Notwithstanding our efforts, some type specimens that are cited in the literature as having been deposited in the MLP Carcinological Collection, have not yet been found. Classification and nomenclature follow the World Register of Marine Species (2022).

In case of non-type material, each entry includes: the name of the taxon with its author(s) and year of publication, host for parasite species, specimen number and sex, locality, date and collector name.
