Abstract

The collections of the Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Genève hold type specimens of 12 species and one subspecies of grasshopper described by Marcello La Greca. These species are listed alphabetically with an account of the condition of the specimens, and the current binomial combination for each is provided.

INTRODUCTION

Marcello La Greca (1914-2001), for many years a professor at the University of Catania, was an enthusiastic entomologist, biogeographer and environmentalist. He specialised in the study of the Orthoptera and Mantodea, and described 102 species or subspecies. La Greca gave his private collection, rich in types, to the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Milano (Baccetti & Ruffo, 2003), but also studied specimens from other collections, private and public. Type specimens of species described by La Greca came to the Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Genève (MHNG) with the collections of Kurt Harz and Adolf Nadig, in the latter case because most of the species represented were described using specimens collected by Nadig. The MHNG collections contain type specimens of 12 species and one subspecies.

InhisearlypublicationsLaGrecadidnotalwaysdesignate a holotype or even give the number of specimens he had studied. In his later publications, however, he was scrupulous about designating a holotype and cautious in designating paratypes. Generally, only specimens from the same locality as the holotype are thus denoted even when he had examined far more while preparing the description.

ARRANGEMENT AND FORMAT

The species and subspecies names are arranged in alphabetic order. The format follows Hollier (2019). Nomenclature follows Cigliano et al., 2023.

LA GRECA” [typewritten on white card, with a circular blue label glued on]; “ALLOTIPO” [printed on red card].

  • The original description states that the holotype was deposited in Nadig's collection, but the ♂ specimen in the MHNG was labelled as a paratype by La Greca, which suggests that the holotype was accidentally retained by La Greca. The two type specimens in his collection, deposited in the Museo Civico di Storia Naturalle di Milano, are also labelled as paratypes however (Rigato, pers. comm.), and so it appears that the specimen in the MHNG is actually the holotype and that La Greca's paratype label was applied by mistake. Nadig labelled a series of other specimens with the same data as the holotype as paratypes, but these were not seen by La Greca and are therefore not part of the type series. Box Nadig 356.
