Abstract

Entomopathogenic fungi are a broad group of microorganisms that help maintain pest abundance below economic levels in agroecosystems. Limited studies on native isolates of these biological control agents have been done in northern Mexico. Our research endeavors to expand on earlier work. Our primary objective was to collect natural enemies in the Arteaga Coahuila areas where apples, Malus pumila Miller, are grown and isolate and use morphological and molecular characteristics to identify strains of entomopathogenic fungi. Metarhizium anisopliae (Metchnikoff) Sorokin was the dominant genus with eight isolates, and Beauveria bassiana (Bals.-Criv.),had five with 99% identity to the described species at the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) gene bank, mainly at Los Lirios, followed by San Antonio de las Alazanas, and Huachichil with dominance from April through August.
