Presented is an annotated catalog of the 38 genera and 382 species of Leiodidae known to occur in the Nearctic Region of North America north of Mexico (the continental USA and Canada). Information on types, distributions, and biologies is included. Twelve of the species also or probably occur in Mexico, and 16 of the species also occur in Europe and/or Asia (i.e., are Holarctic in distribution). Ptomaphagus (Appadelopsis) neojonesi Peck and Newton is proposed as a nomen novum (replacement name) for Ptomaphagus (Adelops) jonesiPeck, 1978, preoccupied by Ptomaphagus valentinei jonesiJeannel, 1949. Stereus arenariusPeck and Cook, 2009 is transferred to Pseudotriarthron as P. arenarium (Peck and Cook, 2009), new combination.

Data from literature were used to compile a checklist of the Egyptian fauna of the water scavenger beetles (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae). The checklist includes data on the type localities, references in which the species are described in detail, world and Egyptian distribution, and other references for 51 valid species belonging to 17 genera: AmphiopsErichson, 1843; Anacaena Thomson, 1859; Berosus Leach, 1817; Cercyon Leach, 1817; Chaetarthria Stephens, 1835; Dactylosternum Wollaston, 1854; Enochrus Thomson, 1859; HelocharesMulsant, 1844; HydrobiomorphaBlackburn, 1888; Hydrochara Berthold, 1827; Hydrophilus Geoffroy, 1762; Laccobius Erichson, 1837; Pachysternum Motschulsky, 1863; Paracymus Thomson, 1867; RegimbartiaZaitzev, 1908; Sphaeridium Fabricius, 1775; and SternolophusSolier, 1834. The present study provides a summary that can help as the basis for future progress in the knowledge of the Egyptian Hydrophilidae.

A great diversity of arthropods is symbiotically associated with army ant colonies. Despite the efforts of several generations of researchers to survey army ant symbiont diversity, many species still await scientific discovery. Moreover, the taxonomy of many army ant-associated groups remains unsettled. Here we re-assess the species status of two army ant-associated beetles of the family Histeridae (subfamily Haeteriinae): Ecclisister bickhardtiReichensperger, 1923 and Ecclisister bickhardti costaericaeReichensperger, 1935. We examined specimens fromCosta Rica, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, Guyana, and Brazil. Based on the analysis of external and genital morphological characters, we elevated the subspecies to species level. In addition to morphological characters, we provide 11 DNA barcodes for E. costaericae, new status, to facilitate future identifications. A survey of symbiont diversity of the six local army ant species of Eciton Latreille at La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica, revealed a specific association of E. costaericae with the host ant Eciton burchellii foreliMayr, 1886. We describe the beetles' mechanism of phoretic transport and discuss reasons for the many taxonomic ambiguities in army ant symbionts.

Anillinus alleni Sokolov and Carlton, new species, is described from the Ozark Mountain Interior Highlands (type locality: Blanchard Springs Recreation Area, Stone County, Arkansas, USA) based on four specimens collected using soil washing followed by Berlese extraction. The species is unique among anilline carabids in possessing extremely large, spinous projections on the male metafemora. It represents the second known anilline species occurring in the Ozark Highlands, both of which were collected using soil-washing techniques. Similarities with other species of Anillinus Casey are discussed, and ideas are presented about the potential adaptive significance of elements of external morphology in relation to subterranean habitats.

This article presents both ethnoentomological notes on Nahuatl and Mixtec language terms as they are applied to Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) and distributional records for species collected during three projects carried out in the states of Guerrero and Puebla, Mexico. Some comparative data from other Mesoamerican and Native American languages are discussed. Indigenous common names are mapped onto current taxonomic nomenclature, and an analysis is offered of the logical basis for Indigenous classification: the exclusion of some cerambycids and the inclusion of other beetles in the nominal native “cerambycid” category. New state distributional records for the Cerambycidae collected in this study are offered for Guerrero: Bebelis picta Pascoe, Callipogon senex Dupont, Neocompsa macrotricha Martins, Olenosus serrimanus Bates, Ornithia mexicana zapotensis Tippmann, Stenygra histrio Audinet-Serville, Strongylaspis championi Bates, Lissonotus flavocinctus puncticollis Bates, and Nothopleurus lobigenis Bates; and Puebla: Juiaparus mexicanus (Thomson), Ptychodes guttulatus Dillon and Dillon, and Steirastoma senex White.

The Malagasy endemic whirligig beetle Heterogyrus millotiLegros, 1953 is redescribed. Jumping behavior of H. milloti is reported here for the first time with video recordings provided. Results of a behavioral experiment conducted in the field demonstrate H. milloti jumps in a targeted manner in a downstream direction. The unique habitat of H. milloti is described in detail with both image and video of the habitat included. Morphology of H. milloti is discussed in detail, revealing symplesiomorphies with SpanglerogyrusFolkerts, 1979, characters forming transitional series between Spanglerogyrus and the Gyrininae, and features unique to H. milloti. The potential adaptive significance of these peculiar morphological features in association with the habitat of H. milloti is discussed. Finally, an argument for the necessity of conservation of this species is made, and common names in English, French, Malagasy, and Swedish for H. milloti are proposed to aid conservation efforts.

Seven new teratological cases in five species of the American genus Cotinis Burmeister are described and illustrated. Anomalies affect head structures, the pronotum, elytra, and pygidium. A compilation of previously described teratological cases in 48 species of Scarabaeoidea is provided

The nocturnal American burying beetle (Nicrophorus americanus Olivier, 1790; Silphidae), once widely distributed in the eastern United States, is currently listed as endangered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The factors driving its decline remain largely unknown. Curiously, a closely related and ecologically similar burying beetle, the roundneck burying beetle (Nicrophorus orbicollis Say, 1825), remains abundant and widespread. We used two sets of trapping data from Nebraska and Oklahoma, USA to examine the effects of moon phase and weather on capture rates of the two species. We found that on nights with few clouds, increasing moonlight levels reduced captures of American burying beetles in baited pitfall traps at both sites. In Nebraska, cloud cover reversed the association between moon phase and capture rate (regression line slope became slightly positive). In contrast, in Oklahoma fewer American burying beetles were caught on cloudy nights for all moon phases. We hypothesize this to be a result of amplification of skyglow from the nearby city of McAlester. The number of roundneck burying beetles captured was not associated with moonlight levels or cloud cover in Oklahoma. Together, these data suggest that natural nighttime lighting affects activity of these two closely related species differently.

Lupraea elongata (Jacoby, 1891), formerly known only from Mexico, is reported for the first time from Arizona, USA. The species is redescribed and illustrated.

The third instar and pupa of Geniates borelli Camerano, 1894 and Anomala testaceipennis Blanchard, 1856 are described and illustrated. Adults were collected with light traps from September to December in 2009 and 2010 at the experimental farm of the Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul, muncipality of Aquidauana, Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. Laboratory rearing of eggs from these adults was conducted to obtain immature insects. An identification key to the known third instars of Rutelinae of the New Word is also provided.

The third instars of Coelhydrus brevicollis Sharp and Darwinhydrus solidus Sharp are described and illustrated for the first time, with detailed morphometric and chaetotaxic analyses of the cephalic capsule, head appendages, legs, last abdominal segment, and urogomphi. A key for the identification of the third instars of the genera of Hyphydrini known in detail is provided. A parsimony analysis based on 49 informative larval characteristics was conducted using the program TNT. The consensus tree supports a placement of Coelhydrus Sharp and Darwinhydrus Sharp within the tribe Hyphydrini. Within the Hyphydrini, Coelhydrus is postulated to share a monophyletic origin with Hyphydrus Illiger and Desmopachria Babington. The phylogenetic placement of Darwinhydrus, however, remains contentious as our study found it part of an unresolved polytomy with Andex Sharp and Primospes Sharp.

Mountainous areas are characterized by high biological diversity but are threatened by agricultural reclamation. To evaluate the effects of agricultural land use and woody crop intercropping on carabid diversity in mountainous regions, we compared the diversity of carabid beetles and their body size compositions in two walnut plantations (monoculture and newly established intercropping system) and two secondary succession habitats (secondary forest and grassland) in 2011 and 2012. Carabid activity-abundance did not differ among the walnut plantations and secondary succession habitats for both sampling years, and species richness was higher in the walnut monoculture in 2012. However, the secondary succession habitats harbored more large carabid individuals than the walnut plantations. All of the carabid species compositions in the walnut plantations differed from those in the secondary succession habitats, whereas the species compositions of large carabids in the walnut plantations differed from those in the secondary succession habitats in 2012 but were similar in 2011.We conclude that converting secondary succession lands to walnut plantations had little effect on both the alpha diversity and species turnover of carabid assemblages, but the secondary succession lands were essential for sustaining diverse large carabids, which comprised conserved species and natural control agents. The newly introduced walnut-chrysanthemum intercropping system did not produce significant short-term losses in carabid diversity compared with the walnut monoculture system, but the concept that the walnut-chrysanthemum intercropping system could serve as a trade-off between production and biodiversity conservation will require long-term monitoring.

As a result of recent field work in Hormozgan and Bushehr provinces in southern Iran from winter to spring 2016, two species of Carabidae, Diodercarus arrowi Lutshnik, 1931 and Chlaenius (Amblygenius) bengalensis Chaudoir, 1856, are reported from Iran for the first time. Twelve new province records are documented for Hormozgan and seven for Bushehr.
