1 March 2004 IX International Mammalogical Congress Sapporo, July 31–August 5, 2005

ANNOUNCEMENT

The Ninth International Mammalogical Congress (IMC 9), formerly the International Theriological Congress (ITC), will be held in 2005 in Sapporo, Japan. The Congress will be hosted by the Science Council of Japan and the Mammalogical Society of Japan, with the support of the Hokkaido Government and the Sapporo City Government. The Organizing Committee looks forward to welcoming you to Japan and hopes that you will enjoy your stay in Sapporo.

Background

The Congress aims to bring together mammalian biologists from around the world and to serve as a venue for them to present their latest studies. It promises to contribute to mammalogy through exchanges of scientific information and discussions of various issues. Since this will be the first IMC congress held in Asia, it is expected to contribute greatly to mammalogy in Asia.

Scientific Program

The Congress will address various aspects of research on mammalogy, including conservation and management. The event also provides an opportunity for IUCN/SSC specialist groups to meet. Details will be announced later.

Location and Dates

The Congress will run from July 31 to August 5, 2005, in Sapporo, Japan. Sapporo, the capital of Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido, is richly blessed with natural splendor, as is evident in the surrounding mountains. These are habitats for brown bear, sika deer and other wildlife. Visitors to Sapporo will have a wonderful opportunity to explore the scenic landscape. The Congress site will be Sapporo Convention Center, which opened in June 2003. The Convention Center is a convenient 15-minute subway ride from the city centre. Attendees are sure to be met with the warmest of welcomes.
