Hypoestes canescens Hedrén & Thulin, nom. nov., is proposed for the illegitimate name H. cinerea Hedrén, non C. B. Clarke.
Hypoestes cinerea Hedrén, proposed for a species from central Somalia (Hedrén 2006a), is a later homonym of H. cinerea C.B. Clarke, described from the Philippines (Clarke 1906). It is therefore an illegitimate name under Art. 53.1 of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (McNeill & al. 2012). Accordingly, a replacement name is here provided for the species in Somalia.
Hypoestes canescens Hedrén & Thulin, nom. nov. ≡ Hypoestes cinerea Hedrén in Willdenowia 36: 752. 2006, nom. illeg. [non Hypoestes cinerea C. B. Clarke in Publ. Bur. Sci. Gov. Lab. 35: 89(-90). 1906],
Holotype: Somalia, Mudug Region, 15 km N of Hobyo on road to Jirriiban, 05°27′N, 48°32′E, 28 May 1989, Thulin & Abdi Dahir 6647 (UPS; isotype: K000430896).
Hypoestes canescens is an endemic of central Somalia, where it is known from three collections only, all from coastal grassland near Hobyo. It may be locally common, but at present its conservation status can best be assessed as data deficient.A full description of the species is given in Hedrén (2006a) and Hedrén (2006b).
