The 60 specific names that have been applied to American Tabanus species with striped abdomens and banded eyes are reviewed. The group is defined, the 28 valid taxa discussed, 2 new species described, and 6 names discarded as unrecognized or not applying to American taxa. Keys are provided to females of all recognized taxa and to males of those taxa the males of which are known. The new species are Tabanus kwatta n. sp. coastal Venezuela to Para, Brazil, and T. wokei n. sp. from eastern Bolivia. T. wilkersoni n. n. is proposed to replace T. despectus Fairchild from the Amazon basin, a preoccupied name. Head characters and eye patterns, where known, are figured for nearly all species.
