1 April 2010 Cerithium harzhauseri nom. nov., a New Replacement Name for Cerithium (Ptychocerithium) Archiaci Vredenburg, 1928, non Cerithium archiaci Hébert and Renevier, 1854 (Mollusca: Gastropoda)

During the course of my study of the Cenozoic molluscan faunas in the Indo-West Pacific region, I observed that the cerithiid gastropod Cerithium (Ptychocerithium) archiaci Vredenburg, 1928 (Vredenburg, 1928, p. 356–357) is preoccupied by Cerithium archiaci Hébert and Renevier, 1854 (Hébert and Renevier, 1854, p. 183, pl. 1, fig. 8). The former species was described based on “Cerithium pseudocorrugatum d'Orb.?” of d'Archiac and Haime (1854, p. 299–300 [pro parte], pl. 28, figs. 5, 5a, 7, 8) from the Lower-Middle Miocene Gaj Formation in western India (currently Pakistan). C. (P.) archiaci Vredenburg, 1928 is neither a junior synonym of a certain valid species-group name nor a senior synonym of other available species-group names (Eames, 1950; Harzhauser, 2007). Because Ptychocerithium Sacco, 1895 is currently thought to be synonymous with Cerithium Bruguière, 1789 (e.g., Houbrick, 1992), I propose a new replacement name Cerithium harzhauseri nom. nov. for C. (P.) archiaci Vredenburg, 1928. The new name is in honor of Dr. Mathias Harzhauser of the Natural History Museum Vienna.

In addition, there are two other objective homonyms of Cerithium archiaci Hébert and Renevier, 1854. The first is Cerithium archiaci Piette, 1855 (Piette, 1855, p. 1097) from the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) in Aisne Department, northern France. Cossmann (1920) considered it to be a junior synonym of Procerithium konincki (d'Archiac, 1843), which was originally found in the same locality. The other is Cerithium (Campanile) archiaci Dollfus, 1915 (Dollfus, 1915, p. 30, pl. 2, fig. 808) from the ?Oligocene in Celebes (currently Sulawesi, Indonesia). Cossmann (1920) initially pointed out that this species-group name is preoccupied by C. archiaci Piette, 1855; later, he (Cossmann, 1921) proposed the new replacement name Cerithium gustavei for C. (C.) archiaci Dollfus, 1915. It may be noted that these two species-group names were omitted in a checklist of Cenozoic Campanile by Matsubara (2009).
