The Flat Rock Quillwort, Isoetes graniticola sp. nov., occurs in ephemeral pools on several granite outcrops in Randolph and Lee counties of east-central Alabama, and possibly Heard County of western Georgia. It is tetraploid (2n=44), in contrast to the widespread Piedmont outcrop diploid (2n=22) I. piedmontana (s. str.), with which it is close in appearance. Presently known from three (possibly five) populations, I. graniticola represents a globally rare endemic of the western Piedmont.
