Abstract

We utilized the human landing catch method to compare the biting rhythm of mosquitoes in two urban sites – a protected natural area and a housing development. We collected 9,186 mosquitoes of six species, and 75% of them were collected in the housing development. Culex salinarius was the dominant species at both sites, and more than 90% of the mosquitoes collected were members of this species. The biting activity of three species was analyzed. To our knowledge, this LV WKH ¿UVW VWXG\ WR VKRZ GLXUQDO peaks of hematophagous activity for both Aedes quadrivittatus and Ae. guerrero. The biting rhythm of Cx. salinarius at both sites showed two peaks of activity with one at dawn and the other at dusk. This study provides information on the hematophagous activity of mosquitoes in two sites of Puebla city, Mexico, which can help to generate and improve the surveillance of the populations of mosquitoes and the programs to control them.
