An adult Western Grebe Aechmophorus occidentalis was kept and hand-fed in an outdoor encloser. Prey-fish were provided ad libitum, and daily caloric intake was calculated. Activity was monitored to ensure accurate metabolic assessment. Body mass fluctuation and distinct meal sizes were revealed.
