Please note that these guidelines are subject to change, and any such changes will be included on this page and shall become effective upon their posting on our website. (See "Changes to Policy" below.)

Information BioOne Collects

Personally Identifiable Information (“Personal Information”) is any information that permits the identity of a specific individual to be directly or indirectly inferred. The Personal Information BioOne collects will depend on how you are using the Site. To create a BioOne Digital Library Account, we collect your name, email address, and password, as well as other information you may supply. In addition, we may collect Personal Information through correspondence you send to us. To enable your access to the Site through your library or institution, we may collect information concerning the institution's Internet protocol address or other authentication methods, which could, if combined with other information relating to you, constitute Personal Information. We may also collect certain non-personally identifiable information, such as the type of browser you are using, the type of operating system you are using, and the domain name of your Internet Service Provider. Unless you provide us with Personal Information, you remain anonymous to us other than by association with an Internet protocol address or other authentication mechanism.
To facilitate your pay-per-view order or subscription payment, third-party vendors collect your name, postal address, email address, credit card details and transactional information via the appropriate payment portal. Further details are provided below.

Security of Information and Personal Data

BioOne is committed to protecting the security of your personal data. We use a variety of security technologies and procedures to help protect your personal data from unauthorized access, use or disclosure.

Personal information that you provide (name, email, authentication details, transaction history) is stored in our secure and controlled database. Credit card information is not stored.

We require our third-party vendors to similarly handle highly confidential data according to industry security standards.

The Site has security measures in place to protect against the loss, misuse, and alteration of the information under our control. We have taken the necessary steps to provide a secure server for transmission of sensitive data to and from the Site.

Unfortunately, no information transferred over the Internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee the security of data transmitted to us.

Use of the Information

We use the Personal Information collected in ways that are compatible with the purposes for which it was intended to be used: to enable your use of BioOne; to facilitate subscription payment; to enable pay-per-view transactions; to create your BioOne Digital Library Account; to respond to your inquiries; for system administration, customer support, and troubleshooting purposes; for targeted marketing and product service announcements from BioOne; for sending newsletters (also directed at institutional participation in BioOne); to improve the design of the Site; to enable us to enforce our Terms of Use; and in aggregate form, to track and analyze site usage. BioOne will take reasonable steps to ensure that Personal Information is relevant to its intended use, accurate, complete and current.

Onward Transfer of Information

When we employ a third party to perform these functions, that third party is provided only with the particular Personal Information necessary to provide these services for us, and is prohibited from using Personal Information provided by BioOne for any other purpose.

BioOne's credit card processors – PayPal and PayTrace - comply with the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard. All inquiries regarding the privacy practices of the Site and third-party vendors may be directed to BioOne by email to helpdesk@BioOne.org.

Except in the following special circumstances, BioOne does not sell or share personal information about or the purchasing history of individual users:

  • If required to do so by law or if we believe in good faith that such action is necessary to comply with the law or a legal proceeding, to protect against violations of our Terms of Use, or to protect and defend our rights and property of publishers selling content through BioOne;
  • With service providers with whom we have entered into agreements to assist us with our business operations; or,
  • Other third parties if necessary to deliver our services, such as an institution with which you are affiliated.

BioOne will never rent or sell your Personal Information to another organization for marketing purposes. In addition, BioOne shares general usage data in aggregated form so that no Personal Information is identifiable to participating libraries, publishers, and the general public.
