Research Needs for the Predaceous Heteroptera

Abstract

Despite their abundance and presumed importance in many managed and natural systems, heteropteran predators are still quite poorly understood. A better understanding of the biology of these predators would contribute to enhancing their use in biological control programs, and to more fully recognizing their relative roles in natural ecosystems. Research in 3 broad areas would greatly improve our appreciation and utilization of heteropteran predators: 1) characterization of their predatory impact on community and population dynamics in natural and managed ecosystems, 2) elucidation of systematic, phylogenetic, and general ecological and life-history information, and 3) development of methods for efficient and cost-effective commercial production and field delivery.
