Sea cucumbers (holothuroids) lack the only known echinoderm immune organ, the axial organ. Holothuroids of the families Synaptidae and Chiridotidae have coelomic organs, known as ciliary urns, that gather and excrete waste and, therefore, might function in immunity. Although ciliary urns are widely reported and illustrated in the literature, the process and histology of urn development remain unknown. Development and structure of ciliary urns were examined in Synaptula hydriformis using scanning electron, brightfield, and scanning laser confocal microscopy. Mature urns occurred on all three mesenteries in 10-tentacled young and later growth stages, and developing urns were found in post-pentactulae, 10-tentacled young, and released juveniles. Developing urns were circular clusters of ciliated collar cells protruding from the mesentery. The cells increased in number to form the sessile cushion stage with a shallow lumen. The subsequent spoon-shaped stage had a stalk and a deepened lumen with an extensive ciliary field where coelomocytes began to accumulate. Mature urns had a thin stalk and cornucopia-shaped body with an abluminal epithelium of squamous cells and an adluminal epithelium of densely packed ciliated collar cells. Cell boundaries of the rim of mature urns and of the stalk and body of developing urns were outlined on one or both sides by microvilli and an elevated cell membrane. Ciliary urns resembling the cushion-stage urns of S. hydriformis have been described in the sea star Archaster typicus. If urns in these groups are homologous, it is likely that cushion urns are plesiomorphic and that they are present and have been overlooked in other echinoderms.

From time to time, small, fragile, previously unknown fossil invertebrates are found in specialized habitats. Occasionally, as in the present case, a fragment of the original habitat that existed millions of years ago is also preserved. The present article describes a previously unknown microinvertebrate in Dominican amber that cannot be placed in any group of extant invertebrates. Placed in a new family, genus, and species, the fossil shares characters with both tardigrades and mites, but clearly belongs to neither group. The several hundred fossil individuals preserved in the amber shared their moist, warm habitat with pseudoscorpions, nematodes, fungi, and protozoa. The large number of fossils provided additional evidence of their biology, including their reproductive behavior, developmental stages, and food. While there is no extant group that can accommodate these fossils, and we have no knowledge of any extant descendants, this discovery shows that unique lineages of minute invertebrates were surviving in the mid-Tertiary.

Glass sponge reefs are endemic to the continental shelf waters of British Columbia and Alaska, where they form complex three-dimensional habitats used by a variety of commercially important fish and invertebrate species. The Hecate Strait and Queen Charlotte Sound Glass Sponge Reefs Marine Protected Area (HSQCS-MPA) was designated in February 2017 to protect 2,410 km² of reef habitat. Efforts to establish baseline information regarding reef-associated taxa in the new MPA have documented the diversity of megafauna in detail, but little is understood of the cryptic epifauna inhabiting hidden crevices within the reefs, and even less is understood of larval recruitment, the key reproductive process maintaining long-term reef health and stability. We collected specimens of a reef-building glass sponge, Farrea occa, from the HSQCS-MPA and described the diversity of their epifauna. Five hundred and two organisms from six phyla were documented, including 84 sponges from three classes. We found several glass sponges: known juvenile reef builders (two Aphrocallistes vastus and two Heterochone calyx); the lyssacine sponge Leucopsacus scoliodocus, previously known in Canadian waters only from Jervis Inlet; and an unidentified dictyonine sponge previously unknown to waters of British Columbia. Also present were the carnivorous sponge Lycopodina occidentalis, 11 individuals of Desmacella austini, evidence for a new species in the subgenus Haliclona (Flagellia), and a clathrinid calcareous sponge. The growth stages we observed suggest multiple settlement events by glass sponge larvae between February and early March. Of the 502 invertebrates, 460 were attached to dead sponge skeleton despite live tissue being much more available as substrate. This study highlights trends in recruitment at sponge reefs, explores factors that may affect larval settlement, describes new sponge associations, and provides the first description of the range of macrofauna found on glass sponges, acting as a baseline for continued monitoring of the MPA.

A laboratory experiment was conducted with the marine gastropod Littorina littorea from three different sites in Long Island Sound to test for inducible responses to the non-native predatory crab Hemigrapsus sanguineus. Individuals of L. littorea did not exhibit decreased shell growth in response to increased predation risk, which differs from the response seen in other species of Littorina. However, snails did exhibit slower growth in response to reduced food availability, as seen in other gastropods. Surprisingly, snails from two sites exhibited differences between the crab-exposed and reduced food-availability treatments in how they remodeled the thickness of different microstructural layers of shell material in apical parts of the shell. Although individuals of L. littorea did not show the typical shell thickening response seen in other gastropods, they did show differences among populations in remodeling their shell. This underlies the importance of examining how the shell is constructed and remodeled in studies of inducible defenses in gastropods, as well as the importance of examining animals from multiple populations.

The cosmopolitan nonindigenous sea anemone, Diadumene lineata, has been recorded from the Pacific coast of Canada since 1859. Despite its long historical presence in the region, the factors influencing the distribution of this species in British Columbia, Canada, are poorly understood, as are the factors that may restrict its local abundance. We conducted large-scale surveys of D. lineata during the winter and summer of 2016, coupled with higher frequency surveys at one focal site. Furthermore, we used laboratory and field experiments to determine the potential importance of a large-scale driver, salinity, and a small-scale driver, microhabitat within boulders, in setting distributional limits at various spatial scales. Our results confirm that D. lineata is widely distributed within the Salish Sea. This broad distribution may be facilitated by post-introduction dispersal; we observed anemones attached to floating substrata, and a few mature specimens contained eggs, suggesting that reproduction is perhaps not limited to asexual fission. We found that D. lineata was abundant throughout the year, although absent from the lowest salinity sites. This corresponded with our laboratory experiments, in which survival of individuals of D. lineata declined at salinities below 10 psu, and no survivors were observed at or below 2 psu. Manipulative experiments in the field demonstrated that survival was high under rocks where D. lineata is commonly found, but was reduced on the tops of rocks, highlighting the importance of microhabitat refugia in buffering temperature and reducing desiccation. A better understanding of the factors that limit the broadscale and local distribution of this anemone are an important step in determining potential ecological impacts of this organism and how distributions may shift into the future.

Marine gastropods exert a strong influence on the structure of marine ecosystems through their foraging activities, yet little is known about how environmental differences in space and time may affect their feeding behavior. To enhance the knowledge about the trophic ecology of coastal benthic species, we investigated temporal and spatial variations in the diet of the sandy beach gastropod Olivella minuta. We collected individuals of O. minuta seasonally, over 1 year, at two sandy beaches with different morphodynamic characteristics (Araçá Bay, an ultra-dissipative tidal flat, and Barequeçaba Beach, a dissipative beach) and analyzed the stomach contents of specimens of O. minuta. We identified approximately 15,000 food items, which we grouped into 14 categories. Thirteen food categories were found at each area, but significant differences in diet were observed between sites and sampling periods. Individuals from Araçá consumed an overall larger quantity and diversity of food items, which consisted mainly of foraminiferans, polychaetes, and crustaceans. At Barequeçaba, diatoms were the most important item, followed by crustaceans and polychaetes. Temporal variation depended on sites: the number of food items in the stomachs of individuals of O. minuta and dietary composition was roughly constant over time at Araçá, whereas larger variations were observed at Barequeçaba. Although O. minuta has been previously characterized as a carnivore/scavenger, our results show that the diet of this species varies in space and time and comprises a large variety of food resources. The species thus plays a role in the cycling of both vegetal and animal organic matter. This generalist behavior may allow individuals to shift their diet according to habitat alterations and food availability, thereby enhancing the persistence and resilience of O. minuta in different environments or future climate change scenarios.

To better understand the sessile rotifer community of a shallow, eutrophic lake, we monitored over a 1-year period the monthly changes in the density and diversity of rotifers on the roots of the common water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes, which served as a representative hydrophyte. Selected physical and chemical parameters of the water were also determined. Mean annual density of all sessile species was 630 individuals per ml. Species of Collothecacea (n = 7) were most abundant. Of the 12 species of Flosculariaceae (Flosculariidae), Sinantherina socialis occurred seasonally, while Ptygura beauchampi was most common across all seasons. The Shannon–Wiener diversity index was highest (H′ = 2.8) in April, but decreased in January (H′ = 1.3). Applying the concept of the guild ratio (functional-based analysis) we found that raptorial species (Collothecacea) were dominant over most of the year (June–February), while microphagous Flosculariidae were dominant during the warm, drier season (March–May). BEST (optimal matching of biota to environment, including stepwise search) analysis and canonical correspondence revealed that temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, and transparency strongly influenced sessile rotifer dynamics. We also found significant correlations between the density of some species and physicochemical variables. These species included Collotheca ambigua, C. coronetta, C. ornata, C. campanulata, C. tenuilobata, and Stephanoceros millsii in the Collothecacea; and Beauchampia crucigere, Limnias melicerta, L. ceratophylli, Ptygura crystallina, P. melicerta, and Sinantherina ariprepes in the Flosculariidae. Our study shows that the communities of sessile rotifers were structured by abiotic factors and that the guild ratio is useful for understanding the relationship between sessile rotifers and their substrata.

The serpulid annelid Ficopomatus enigmaticus is a widely distributed invader of shallow-water, brackish habitats in subtropical and temperate regions, where it has numerous damaging ecological and economic effects. Its distributional pattern suggests that temperature and salinity play important roles in limiting its distribution, but because other factors often covary with these, drawing strong conclusions from these patterns is difficult. In an effort to more clearly identify the effects of these factors, we examined tolerance to acute thermal (16–28°C) and salinity (0–35 psu) stress by larvae (5-day exposure, unfed) and adults (14-day exposure, unfed) of F. enigmaticus in the laboratory experiments. Larvae showed higher mortality at the highest temperature tested 28°C; adult survival was unaffected by temperature. Neither larvae nor adults survived exposure to pure freshwater (0 psu), but survived well at salinities ranging 3.5–35 psu. In addition, high salinity did not slow tube growth in adults. These results suggest that salinity stress, in particular, does not directly limit the distribution of F. enigmaticus to low-salinity habitats. Experimental work on the distribution of F. enigmaticus is uncommon in the literature, but is likely needed to identify the abiotic or biotic factors that limit the distribution of this frequently invasive species.

The neonicotinoid imidacloprid and the herbicide diuron are long-lived pesticides commonly detected in European rivers. Both have lethal as well as sublethal effects on aquatic invertebrates dwelling in streambeds. Here, we performed lethality tests of imidacloprid and diuron on seven species of widespread, free-living nematodes and the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans. Our results indicated that nematodes were relatively tolerant to both pesticides, and only two species (Diploscapter coronatus and Plectus opisthocirculus) showed mortality at high nominal concentrations of imidacloprid (119 mg/L) and diuron (33 mg/L). The changes observed in nematode community structure after imidacloprid and diuron exposure may have been related to trade-offs between sensitivity to toxicants and changes in competitive abilities of the species. While the former can be tested using single-species tests, we recommend that the latter be tested in further experiments using multispecies communities. Our results suggest that the presence of these pesticides could favor nematodes over other meiofaunal groups found in freshwater sediments.

The diversity of tropical marine invertebrates is poorly documented, especially those groups for which collecting adults is difficult. We collected the planktonic tornaria larvae of hemichordates (acorn worms) to assess their hidden diversity in the Neotropics. Larvae were retrieved in plankton tows from waters of the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of Panama, followed by DNA barcoding of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S ribosomal DNA to estimate their diversity in the region. With moderate sampling efforts, we discovered six operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in the Bay of Panama on the Pacific coast, in contrast to the single species previously recorded for the entire Tropical Eastern Pacific. We found eight OTUs in Bocas del Toro province on the Caribbean coast, compared to seven species documented from adults in the entire Caribbean. All OTUs differed from each other and from named acorn worm sequences in GenBank by >10% pairwise distance in COI and >2% in 16S. Two of our OTUs matched 16S hemichordate sequences in GenBank: one was an unidentified or unnamed Balanoglossus from the Caribbean of Panama, and the other was an unidentified ptychoderid larva from the Bahamas. The species accumulation curves suggest that nearly all the species have been collected and only one more species might still remain undetected in the Pacific. In contrast, the Caribbean species accumulation curve suggests that further sampling could yield more than 10 additional OTUs. Tornaria from the 14 OTUs exhibited typical planktotrophic morphologies, and, in some cases, may be distinguished by differences in pigmentation and by the number of telotrochal ciliary bands, but in general, few diagnostic differences were detected.
