Abstract

Cernian, A., 2024. Advances in detecting and identifying marine plastic waste: A comprehensive review. In: Phillips, M.R.; Al-Naemi, S., and Duarte, C.M. (eds.), Coastlines under Global Change: Proceedings from the International Coastal Symposium (ICS) 2024 (Doha, Qatar). Journal of Coastal Research, Special Issue No. 113, pp. 1076–1081. The paper presents a review of the main methodologies currently used for the detection of marine plastic debris. Drawing insights from scientific literature across various categories (from in situ methodologies to deep learning approaches), it not only underscores significant discoveries but also provides a nuanced understanding of the main strengths and limitations inherent in each approach. Beyond this, the paper introduces a comprehensive approach aimed at addressing the pressing issue of ocean plastic pollution. We propose a research project which aims to develop and implement an innovative method of detecting and predicting oceanic plastic waste, using deep learning techniques and satellite images. By integrating satellite data with information about ocean currents and wind patterns, the aim is to predict the trajectory and accumulation of plastic waste in the marine environment and to better understand plastic pollution in the seas and oceans. The research objectives of this paper are underpinned by a meticulously planned series of activities. This systematic approach is designed to contribute collectively to the overarching goal of attaining a profound comprehension of plastic debris in marine environments. This includes the crucial aspects of detection, ensuring accurate identification, and trajectory determination, allowing for insights into the movement and accumulation patterns of plastic waste. The integration of these activities forms a cohesive framework, offering a holistic perspective on the multifaceted challenge of ocean plastic pollution and laying the groundwork for informed and effective mitigation strategies. This research serves as a comprehensive and forward-thinking endeavor, blending cutting-edge technology with environmental science to address a critical challenge—ocean plastic pollution.
