Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.; Ericales: Ericaceae) is an important crop grown throughout the eastern United States and Canada. Cross-pollination by insects greatly enhances pollination and fruit set in highbush blueberry. In Florida, low-chill cultivars that flower during the winter when most bees are dormant are used, thus, making it difficult to utilize and depend on unmanaged bees. We investigated flower visitation rates by managed and wild bees and the subsequent berry formation, berry weight, and number of seeds/berry in highbush blueberry fields in north-central Florida. Additionally, we tested three pollinator treatments: 1) pollinator-excluded flowers, 2) open-pollinated treatments that were available to managed and wild bees, and 3) flowers that were hand pollinated. Overall, we found seven native bee species that contribute to highbush blueberry pollination in Florida, but managed honey bees and bumble bees were the main flower visitors. Additionally, 14.5 times more blueberries formed in the open treatments than in the pollinator exclusion treatments, thus illustrating the economic impact bees have on blueberry pollination. Most of the wild bees observed visiting blueberry flowers were ground-nesting species that need uncultivated areas for nesting sites.Therefore, leaving field edges uncultivated and some undisturbed habitat may increase native bee numbers within blueberry farms over time.

In the study, 130 honey bee colonies fed with different levels (5, 20, and 100 liters/colony) of various industrial commercial sugars, including High-Fructose Corn 85 (Fructose-85), High-Fructose Corn 55 (Fructose-55), Glucose Monohydrate (Glucose), Bee feed, and Sucrose syrups, for 2 mo were compared with colonies fed with no sugar (control) in terms of their colony development of worker bee population, hive weight, wax production, wintering ability, foraging behavior, and lifespan of worker bee. Utilization of industrial sugars by honey bee colonies showed differences in terms of colony performance and behavior parameters. Honey bees did not use Glucose heavily, resulting in 4% increase in worker bee loss in winter and 46% decrease in marked worker bee numbers over time when compared to the control. Sucrose syrup had a positive effect on wintering ability, wax production, and hive weight. While Sucrose had a positive effect (3–4%) on wintering ability, the 100 liters/colony sugar syrups of all other sugars had negative effects (6–15%). Sugars containing high levels of monosaccharide were not used effectively by honey bee colonies, whereas the sugars containing fructose and glucose at rates of 40 and 30% (Bee feed and Fructose-55), were utilized effectively. The lifespan of worker bees decreased over time in the 100 liters/colony of all sugars syrup. In conclusion, except Glucose, other industrial sugars can be used for promoting colonies at the beginning of the season (in spring). Industrial sugars except sucrose should not be used in order to meet carbohydrate needs of the colonies in winter.

Coevolutionary interactions between pathogens and their insect vectors can dramatically impact the fitness of herbivorous insects and patterns of plant disease transmission. Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) is a common disease in soybean production worldwide. Infected seed is the primary source of inoculum in fields and the virus is secondarily spread among plants by the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), in a nonpersistent manner. In this study, we compared the biological fitness of A. glycines colonizing both SMV-infected and uninfected soybean plants. Aphids feeding on SMV-infected soybean seedlings were significantly smaller and lighter than those feeding on uninfected plants across life stages. SMV infection caused delayed development of aphid nymphs on soybean seedlings, but this was more than compensated by a reduction in the pre-reproductive period of apterous adults. The fecundity of A. glycines was reduced when feeding on SMV-infected seedlings, resulting in a lower reproductive rate, a longer generation time, and a slower population doubling time. A smaller proportion of aphid offspring developed into alatae when feeding on SMV-infected soybean seedling, and these took longer to mature than their counterparts on uninfected plants. We infer that SMV infection has significantly negative effects on the biological performance of A. glycines, which may be consistent with the long-term coevolution of SMV, soybean, and A. glycines in the transmission cycle of SMV.

Imidacloprid is widely used to manage tomato spotted wilt disease (TSW) in tobacco, tomato, and pepper, caused by Tomato spotted wilt orthotospovirus (TSWV) and spread by the tobacco thrips, Frankliniella fusca Hinds (Thysanoptera: Thripidae). Imidacloprid suppresses transmission of TSWV by reducing probing and feeding by adult thrips on treated plants, thereby reducing the probability of transmission by infectious thrips. Because imidacloprid does not reduce probing and feeding on treated plants to zero, the reduction in transmission probability per viruliferous thrips can be offset by an increase in the number of viruliferous thrips challenging treated plants. A composite of these effects which we call ‘pathogen pressure’ experienced by plants is a function of thrips population size, the proportion of those thrips that are viruliferous, and the probability that viruliferous thrips successfully inoculate plants. To better understand the relationship between imidacloprid's effect on virus transmission, pathogen pressure, and TSW incidence in tobacco, we modeled TSW incidence as a function of the two most important variables affecting components of pathogen pressure, temperature, and precipitation, and the dependence of imidacloprid's effect on pathogen pressure. A model incorporating imidacloprid's effect as a reduction in pathogen pressure was found to be more descriptive than models incorporating the effect as a reduction in TSW incidence. Results reveal maximum proportional reduction in TSW incidence resulting from imidacloprid use is associated with minimal potential TSW incidence. As pathogen pressure increases, potential TSW incidence approaches 100%, and the benefits of imidacloprid use are highest at intermediate levels of pathogen pressure.

It is important to monitor fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) efficiently to implement sustainable means of control. Attractants are often used to increase the efficiency of sticky traps deployed in orchards to monitor Lepidopterans, but remains to be developed to monitor fruit flies. Rhagoletis completa Cresson (Diptera:Tephritidae) is an invasive species in the walnut orchards of Europe, and is commonly monitored with yellow sticky traps. In this study, we collected the volatile compounds released by male and female R. completa, and identified two lactones released exclusively by males. We then formulated both lactones in long-lasting volatile dispensers, and we quantified their release rate over a 26-d period. Finally, during the entire period when female flies are present in the field, we compared the efficiency of the conventional monitoring method using unbaited yellow sticky traps with yellow sticky traps associated with a dispenser releasing both male-produced lactones. These assays were conducted in 54 walnut orchards in France, in 2017. The number of fruit flies caught with sticky traps associated with lactones dispensers was increased by up to 10 times each week. Lactone-baited traps also allowed earlier detection in the season. These field results are promising for R. completa monitoring. A complete chiral identification of these lactones should be performed along with a clarification of their role in the sexual communication of R. completa.

The Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae) also known as Asian citrus psyllid transmits ‘Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' (CLas) associated with the citrus Huanglongbing (HLB). Minimizing Asian citrus psyllid populations is one of the most important methods for HLB control. The development and survival of Asian citrus psyllid were evaluated on CLas+ and CLas- plants of Citrus reticulata Blanco. cv. Mashuiju (Sapindales: Rutaceae) or Citrus sunki Hort. ex Tanaka (Sapindales: Rutaceae) to assess the effects of CLas infection on vector populations. The development times were unaffected between CLas+ and CLas- plants for eggs and first to third instar nymphs but decreased for fourth instars, fifth instars, and total nymphal life on CLas+ plants. The survival rates of eggs and first and second instar nymphs were significantly lower, while those of third to fifth instar nymphs were significantly higher on CLas+ plants. However, overall nymphal survival did not differ between CLas+ and CLas- plants. The pre-oviposition period of Asian citrus psyllid on CLas+ plants decreased, while oviposition period increased, resulting in significantly higher fecundity and population trend index compared with those on CLas- plants, illustrating an overall fitness benefit of CLas infection to Asian citrus psyllid. On the other hand, the longevity and resistance to starvation and lower temperatures of adults from CLas+ plants were significantly lower than those from CLas- plants suggesting that there may be a fitness cost for Asian citrus psyllid on CLas+ plants. The development time of eggs and nymphs and adult longevity were always shorter on C. reticulata regardless of infection status. This knowledge of host plant, pathogen, and vector interactions is useful for developing Asian citrus psyllid-HLB management programs.

Alternative foods such as pollen may help predators to maintain their populations even when their prey is scarce or absent. In order to develop an appropriate spider mite management strategy using Neoseiulus californicus McGregor and optimize laboratory rearing, its biological parameters on four types of pollen (cedar, pistachio, pear, and apricot) were determined and compared on Tetranychus urticae Koch. Our results indicated that the developmental times of females and males varied from 6.06 to 7.32, and 6.00 to 7.15 d, respectively. The highest fecundity was obtained on pistachio pollen, followed by apricot pollen and T. urticae. Feeding on cedar pollen caused the lowest fecundity. In contrast to T. urticae and pistachio pollen, which resulted in the highest intrinsic and finite rates of increase, feeding on cedar pollen produced the lowest value. Pistachio and apricot pollen appear to have the highest nutritional value. From an ecological perspective, in the presence of pistachio pollen, a more rapid population increase of N. californicus could be expected, when the prey is scarce or absent in greenhouses or fields. This may provide valuable information for the design of a comprehensive program for conservation and/or mass production of N. californicus to control T. urticae and other pests.

Wireworms, the larval stage of click beetles (Coleoptera: Elateridae), are a considerable threat to cereal and vegetable production in the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain regions of the United States. As insecticides are generally ineffective, alternative controls are needed to improve wireworm management. Wireworms are continuously exposed to a wide range of subterranean pathogenic organisms in the soil; identifying these organisms and determining their impact would contribute to the development of biological control for wireworms. Here, we evaluated the efficacy of an entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser) (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae), and a fungus, Metarhizium brunneum Petch (strain F52) (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae), for control of the Pacific Northwest predominant wireworm species Limonius californicus, in two different soil media. We also examined whether diatomaceous earth (DE) increases the efficacy of entomopathogens through facilitating their penetration into the host integument. Treatments containing M. brunneum (F52) resulted in the highest rates of wireworm mortality, indicating that the fungus may be more effective than the nematode at reducing population size. However, results were impacted by soil media. In peatmoss-dominated medium, M. brunneum-containing treatments were more effective in reducing feeding damage than treatments containing S. carpocapsae. However, in sand-dominated medium, treatments with S. carpocapsae provided relatively better seedling protection. No consistent effect of DE was detected. Our results suggest that the effectiveness of wireworm biological control agents depends on soil media, such that the application of biological control against wireworms must be made with knowledge of field soil type.

Nitrogen (N) fertilization is a common agricultural practice, which, by increasing the quality of plants, also enhances their nutritional suitability for insect herbivores, creating the possibility of a cascade of N across trophic levels, from plant to herbivore to predator. We manipulated the quality of cucumber plants by fertilizing them with three different N rates (110, 160, and 210 ppm), which represented low, medium, and high N levels, respectively. Colonies of Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae) were then reared on these plants and used as prey for adult Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in experiments that characterized the predator's foraging behavior and functional response to different aphid densities. The nutritional content of plants and aphids was also measured. As N fertilization increased, so did the nutrient content (total energy) of aphids and this resulted in declining rates of aphid consumption by beetles at higher aphid densities. Females in the 110 N treatment, and males in all treatments, responded to aphids with a type II functional response (decelerating consumption at higher densities), but females in the 160 and 210 ppm N treatments exhibited a type III response (consuming a declining proportion of available aphids at high densities). Beetles fed aphids from the 110 N treatment consumed more prey in both assays than did those fed aphids from the 210 N treatment. Beetle searching time, handling time, and duration of digestive pauses all increased at high levels of N fertilization, especially for females.The results indicate that heavy N fertilization can increase prey nutritional quality to the point where it alters predator foraging and feeding behavior, resulting in slower rates of prey consumption and longer prey handling times.

We attempted to develop an efficient management strategy against gall thrips (Gynaikothrips uzeli Zimmermann (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae)) via the combined application of a systemic insecticide (imidacloprid) and an entomopathogenic fungus (Lecanicillium lecanii Zimmerman (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae)). The attraction of G. uzeli to Ficus microcarpa volatiles after imidacloprid treatment was weaker than for untreated plants, which could be due to modulation of volatile metabolite profiles by imidacloprid. The toxicity of L. lecanii against nymph and adult thrips was much higher for those that fed on plants treated with a 50% lethal concentration (LC₅₀) of imidacloprid than for the controls. Phenoloxidase (PO) activity was significantly inhibited in treated G. uzeli, while hemocyte abundances were not different in treated and healthy individuals. Thus, imidacloprid impacted the PO-related humoral immunity of G. uzeli, but not their cellular immunity. Overall, F. microcarpa treated with imidacloprid at LC₅₀ concentrations exhibited volatile profiles that decreased the attraction of G. uzeli and also indirectly increased the pathogenicity of L. lecanni by inhibiting the humoral immunity of gall thrips. The results reported here suggest that combined application of imidacloprid and L. lecanii could be used as a new integrated control strategy against gall thrips.

The spread of the multicolored Asian lady beetle Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in Europe coincided with the decline of the native Adalia bipunctata (L.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Both species are predators of aphids in orchards, and differential susceptibility to insecticides used to control fruit pests may contribute to explain the competitive advantage of the invasive over the native species. In this study, the insecticidal activity of imidacloprid and spinetoram was tested on third instars and adults of both ladybird species under laboratory conditions. Insects were exposed to insecticide residues on potted peach plants that were sprayed with the maximum recommended field doses (100 mg/liter for imidacloprid and 66.67 mg/liter for spinetoram). Mortality was scored after short (2 d for both stages) and long (7 and 10 d for adults and larvae, respectively) exposure periods.The susceptibility to the insecticides was very similar for H. axyridis and A. bipunctata. Imidacloprid caused a significant increase in the mortality of both stages of the two species for every exposure period. On the other hand, when exposed to spinetoram residues, larvae and adults of both ladybirds did not show higher mortality than controls after short and long exposure periods. The pest suppression provided by ladybirds, which could be severely hampered by the applications of nonselective pesticides, might be enhanced by the adoption of reduced-risk insecticides, selective for these beneficial insects.

Yeasts from all immature life stages of Mexican fruit fly Anastrepha ludens (Loew) (Diptera: Tephritidae) from diet, insectary air, and rearing materials were isolated, identified and evaluated for pathogenicity. Fifteen species of yeasts with one to genus level were identified from 72 yeast cultures obtained. Zygosaccharomyces bailii was the only yeast found to be highly pathogenic to Mexican fruit fly. Seventy-two hours post inoculation, the diet in bioassay cups with Z. bailii consistently showed signs of fermentation with gas bubbling causing the migration of larvae to the walls and lids of bioassay cups. The spent diet from Z. balii-infested cups was crusty, cracked and had a pasty layer. Many larvae were small, moribund, and discolored, appearing caramel or blackish. Insect yield loss with Z. bailii in comparison to that of control ranged from 10 to 44% for larvae and 14 to 47% for pupae. Additionally, Z. bailii caused a reduction in mean pupal weight. The weakly pathogenic yeasts produced significantly less yield of larvae and pupae than the nonpathogenic ones included Trichosporon montevideense, Clavispora lucitaniae, Candida sp., C. rugosa, and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa. Yield loss of larvae caused by this group ranged from 12 (C. lusitaniae) to 18% (R. mucilaginosa). Yield losses for pupa were similar to that of larvae. The mean pupa weight for these species was above the minimum acceptable (16.50 mg) for the SIT program. The nonpathogenic yeast produced yields of larvae and pupae similar to the control included Cryptococcus diffluens, Pichia kudriavzevii, Meyerozyma guilliermondii, Wickerhamomyces anomalus, Trichosporon asahii, Debaryomyces hansenii, Candida tropicalis, Cryptococcus sp., Candida parapsilosis, and Hanseniaspora opuntiae. In conclusion, the identification and management of insect pathogenic yeasts, such as Z. balii in mass rearing systems of Mexican fruit fly must be considered to avoid their potential negative effects.

Autodissemination and foliar sprays of PFR-97 (Certis Inc., Columbia, MD) microbial insecticide, a blastospore formulation of Isaria fumosorosea Wize (Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae), were evaluated for control of Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), on residential citrus. Seasonal trials on dooryard trees in South Texas evaluated: 1) pathogenicity of I. fumosorosea (Ifr) spores on autodisseminators (dispensers) deployed up to 3 wk on grapefruit trees; 2) psyllid control on several citrus species by dispensers and sprays; 3) infection range of the dispenser. Decline in spore pathogenicity over time was similar among dispensers during fall, winter, or spring and decreased by 30% after 1 d, 59% after 7 d, 81% after 14 d, and 100% after 21 d. Dispensers or sprays were equally effective for psyllid control on heavily infested lime trees from fall to spring and reduced mean reproduction (cumulative eggs) by 90% and mean attack intensity (cumulative psyllid-days) of adults by 76% and nymphs by 82%. Dispensers or sprays were also equally effective for psyllid control on lightly infested lime trees from spring to mid-summer and on orange or grapefruit trees from fall to winter. Very light infestations on grapefruit trees from spring to mid-summer were not significantly reduced by dispensers or sprays. Psyllid control was not improved by combining dispensers and sprays. Adult psyllids infected by Ifr were recovered in trees located 3–4 m away from trees with dispensers but not at greater distances. PFR-97 dispensers could be a treatment option for D. citri in settings where chemical control is problematic.

The presence of quarantine insect pests in fruit export can impede trade with other countries. Therefore, to reduce the risk of possible quarantine pests in exported fruit, postharvest disinfestation treatment is essential. This study investigated the effects of vapor heat treatment (VHT) on oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis Hendel (Diptera: Tephritidae)) and melon fly (Bactrocera cucurbitae Coquillett (Diptera: Tephritidae)) which are major pests for papaya fruits. For inoculated papaya fruits weighing 550 ± 100 g, the optimal egg-inoculation density, rearing conditions, and heat tolerance for each developmental stages of both fruit flies were determined, and then analyzed to determine their survival, and assess papaya fruit quality after treatment. Result of VHT of each developmental stage indicated that the eggs of B. dorsalis were the most heat tolerant at 45.6°C. Efficacy test that determined the optimal mortality temperature was performed by subjecting 60 fruits infested with 4,500 eggs to fruit core temperatures of 44.2, 45.2, 46.2, and 47.2°C. It was found that when the papaya fruit core temperature increased at a heating rate of 0.0925°C/min from room temperature to 47.2°C in 3 h, fruit flies showed 100% mortality. Results of the confirmatory test using 300 papaya fruits also indicated 100% mortality at this temperature. Both fruit quality and injury test results demonstrated insignificant differences in color, appearance, soluble solids, or firmness of fruits before and after treatment. Thus, VHT effectively disinfested papaya fruits against both fruit fly species, thus making it a viable quarantine treatment for papaya fruits prior to their export.

The mango fruit cv. ‘Ataulfo’ niño is an underdeveloped fruit that has a split on the back and a pronounced peak, and among the current total supply of commercialized mangoes cv. ‘Ataulfo’, approximately 2% are classified as ‘Ataulfo’ niño, which are strongly infested by Anastrepha ludens (Loew) (Diptera: Tephritidae) and Anastrepha obliqua Mcquart. The objective of this study was to determine the tolerance to 150-Gy generic irradiation for fruit flies of the Anastrepha genus in comparison to the development of a hot water treatment (HWT) as phytosanitary treatments for mango fruits cv. ‘Ataulfo’ niño infested by A. ludens and A. obliqua. The results indicated that both treatments were effective; 150-Gy irradiation and HWT at 46.3–47°C for 51 min did not result in significant effects on the external and internal color, total sugar content, firmness, pH, or weight. The sensorial quality described by the appearance, flavor, color, and odor did not show any significant differences between treatments. For both A. ludens and A. obliqua, the third larval instar was the most thermotolerant. The efficacy test was conducted with an immersion time of 47 min. A. ludens did not survive, but for A. obliqua, three larvae out of a total of 6,890 did survive and pupate. Consequently, the confirmatory test consisted of submerging mangoes infested with third-instar A. ludens and A. obliqua in water at 46.3–47°C for 51 min. In total, 67,392 A. ludens and 22,086 A. obliqua larvae were treated, and no surviving larvae were observed.

The Jack Beardsley mealybug, Pseudococcus jackbeardsleyi Gimpel & Miller (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), a globally devastating, invasive polyphagous insect, causes great damage to many fruits, ornamentals, vegetables, and food crops worldwide. It is of Neotropical origin and has invaded throughout America and in parts of Asia, Africa and Oceania, and is still expanding its invasion ranges. Therefore, a method for quick and correct identification of this invasive species is crucial for quarantine and spreading interruption of it. In present study, we report the first record of P. jackbeardsleyi on the Chinese mainland, which would cause great damage to many crops. The identification of P. jackbeardsleyi was verified via morphological characters and DNA barcoding. One pair of species-specific polymerase chain reaction (SS-PCR) primers was designed based on variations in the sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene among P. jackbeardsleyi and 28 other mealybug species. No cross-reaction was detected among 21 closely related species using this SS-PCR assay, demonstrating the specificity of this marker. Furthermore, this method was successfully applied to detect individuals from different developmental stages and adult debris across four geographic populations of P. jackbeardsleyi, showing the high stability of the assay. Additionally, the detection limit of the marker was 55.94 ± 5.05 pg/μl of P. jackbeardsleyi DNA, illustrating the high sensitivity of the assay. The SS-PCR assay developed in this study provides a rapid, simple and reliable method for the identification of P. jackbeardsleyi, which should be crucial in the plant quarantine, early detection and sustainable management of this globally invasive pest.

The brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) is a major, regionally migratory pest of rice crops in Asia. Despite intensive studies, the seasonal pattern of migration in this species remains largely unknown, especially in northern China. Analysis of monitoring data of light trapping at Beihuang island in northern China showed that brown planthopper migrants could be found at the island in any month from July to October. However, the daily number of brown planthopper migrants varied considerably from day to day, month to month, and year to year. Most of migrants were caught from July to September, with fewer in October. Simulation of backward trajectories showed that there was temporal variation in the source areas of brown planthopper migrants trapped at Beihuang. A majority of migrants trapped at Beihuang in July came from south of Beihuang. In contrast, migrants caught in August and September could be from any direction around the island. Results suggested that the brown planthopper migrants likely traveled northward in July, and Multidirectionally in August and September in northern China. Some of brown planthopper in northeastern China could escape the ‘Pied Piper effect’ and migrate southward in September.

Current monitoring systems for the invasive Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera; Pentatomidae) in orchard agroecosystems rely on ground-deployed tall black pyramid traps baited with the two-component H. halys aggregation pheromone and pheromone synergist. Pyramid traps are comparatively costly, require considerable time to deploy and service, and may not be best suited to grower needs. Therefore, we evaluated other traps for H. halys, including modified pyramid traps (lures deployed on the outside), a canopy-deployed small pyramid, a pipe trap, delta traps, and yellow sticky cards in 2015 and 2016 in commercial apple and peach orchards. We also compared various H. halys killing agents for use in standard pyramid trap collection jars, including VaporTape kill strips, cattle ear tags, and plastic netting treated with various pyrethroids. Finally, we evaluated the effect of positioning the lures inside versus outside the collection jar on standard pyramid traps on overall captures. Among trap types, modified pyramid and pipe traps were most effective, capturing more adults than all other trap designs. Adult captures in small canopy-deployed pyramid, delta, and yellow sticky traps were lower, but significantly correlated with the standard black pyramid. Placing lures on the outside of collection jars on pyramid traps resulted in significantly greater captures and insecticide-impregnated netting was as effective for retaining bugs as VaporTape strips. These studies demonstrate that trapping systems for H. halys can be simplified and improved by modifying the trap design, lure deployment location, and/or killing agent.

The development, survival, and fecundity data of Conogethes punctiferalis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) reared on chestnut (Castanea mollissima Blume), maize (Zea mays L.), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge), and apple (Malus domestica Miller) were collected at 25 ± 1°C and 70 ± 5% RH. Raw data were analyzed and compared by using the age-stage, two-sex life table. The mean fecundity (F) was the highest (282.3 eggs per female) when larvae were reared on chestnut. The lowest mean fecundity (19.2 eggs per female) occurred on apple. The net reproductive rates (R₀) were 134.52, 106.77, 30.29, 27.61, and 8.63 offspring on chestnut, maize, sunflower, hawthorn, and apple, respectively. The intrinsic rates of increase (r) were 0.1359, 0.1326, 0.0807, 0.0811, and 0.0448 d^-1 on chestnut, maize, sunflower, hawthorn, and apple, respectively. Computer projections based on the age-stage, two-sex life table revealed the stage structure and variability of the population growth of C. punctiferalis. Our results demonstrated that although chestnut and maize were the most suitable host plants for C. punctiferalis, the moths were also able to develop and reproduce on sunflower, hawthorn, and apple.

Monitoring insect populations is a fundamental component of integrated pest management programs. In many cropping systems, monitoring is accomplished through captures in baited traps. The aggregation pheromone and pheromone synergist for the invasive Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) are known. We compared the response of H. halys to commercial lures in peach and apple orchards. Two commercial pheromone formulations, PHEROCON Trécé BMSB (‘Trécé’) and AgBio Inc. Stink Bug Xtra Combo (‘Xtra Combo’), were compared with unbaited traps in peach orchards in 2015 and 2016 and in an apple orchard in 2016. In both crops and years, more H. halys responded to the Trécé lure, and fruit from trees near baited traps had correspondingly higher injury. In both years, peach fruit near Trécé baited traps had significantly higher feeding injury (52.2 ± 5.0%) than fruit near Xtra Combo baited and unbaited traps (35.2 ± 4.5% and 22.2 ± 3.4%, respectively). Injury to apple fruit near baited traps in 2016 was significantly different from fruit near unbaited traps (Trécé: 93.0 ± 3.8%, Xtra Combo: 74.1 ± 5.1%, and unbaited: 19.0 ± 2.7%). A field response index, which quantifies attraction of H. halys to each lure, demonstrated an equal response to both lures in 2015 peach and a higher response to Trécé lure in 2016 in both crops, which suggests the lure is pulling bugs from a larger area. We conclude that formulation differences, population pressure, and host plant species influence H. halys populations' response and resulting injury, and should be considered for trap-based decision management.

The behaviors of Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) during inter- and intrasexual interactions between both solitary and paired individuals at different sex ratios were observed on Acer platanoides L. (Sapindales: Sapindaceae) branches in the laboratory. Intrasexual contact was generally ignored by females, but between males resulted in battles from which one male ultimately retreated. When male size differed, larger males won battles, whereas equally sized males split the wins and battled longer. When males initiated intersexual contact, they quickly found and mounted the female. The female apparently determined if and how long the male could copulate with her by controlling access to her genital opening and males would eventually dismount if the female remained unreceptive. After successful copulation, males ignored female intruders and fought off male challengers, generally without dismounting. Some males dismounted females without attempting to copulate. Individual age and size were not predictive of either female or male choice in a mate. Mating duration was affected by both female receptivity and sex ratios present. Male interruptions of the pair shortened time in copula. Male-skewed sex ratios (1F:2M) significantly shortened the time a male would stay with an unreceptive female. Female-skewed sex ratios (2F:1M) did not impact mating duration. Probability of dispersal both from and within the branch was greater for smaller individuals of both sexes and for males when sex ratios were male-skewed.This information demonstrates how reproductive activity might be impacted as population densities decline during efforts at eradication of this species in North America.

Insect–flower visitation is crucial for many angiosperms because insects can facilitate pollination. Floral traits can attract pollinators so studying how they correlate with insect–flower visitation can elucidate how insects and plants interact and coevolve. However, there are few studies on how floral traits correlate with florivory. Not all floral traits that predict attractiveness of flowers to pollinators are applicable for florivory because they may not necessarily reflect the palatability of the flower parts. Leaf functional traits have been studied extensively to predict herbivory, but we are not aware of studies that adopt such leaf traits in florivory. We addressed these limitations by investigating the research questions: 1) How do floral traits differ among different species? 2) How do the floral traits predict the likelihood of florivory? We measured 10 floral traits, including adopting common leaf traits associated with herbivory (e.g., specific leaf area and leaf dry matter content), among three Asteraceae species: Bidens pilosa L., Sphagneticola trilobata (L.) Pruski, and Tridax procumbens L. We then performed the cafeteria assay using a polyphagous floriphilic katydid, Phaneroptera brevis (Serville 1838). We found that ray floret dry matter content correlates negatively with the likelihood of florivory of the asterid ray floret, whereas the total biomass of the ray floret correlates positively with the likelihood of florivory of the entire capitulum. The specific ray floret area also correlates nonlinearly with the likelihood of florivory of the asterid ray florets. We believe that these florivory traits can be applied to the flowers of other species.

An action threshold (AT) based on the specific pest–crop relationship is an important element of integrated pest management (IPM) programs. We evaluated planting time-based ATs to manage a sucking pest, cotton leafhopper (Amrasca devastans; Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) in conventional (CIM-554) and transgenic (Bt.CIM-599) cotton cultivars under field conditions. Cultivars were planted on 15 March, April, and May during 2011 and 2012. Only two ATs (0.1 and 1.0 A. devastans per leaf) and an untreated control could be tested on 15 March planted cotton, as the populations of A. devastans never reached a density of two per leaf. Cotton planted on 15 March had the highest seed cotton yield, highest net and marginal rate of returns (MRRs) than other planting times. At this planting time, only one insecticidal application was needed at an AT of 1.0 A. devastans per leaf, with no significant yield loss. Four ATs (0.1, 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 A. devastans per leaf) and an untreated control were tested for cotton planted on 15 April and 15 May. For the 15 April planting, 2.0 AT led to 3 applications as compared with 10 applications needed with 0.1 AT; without any significant yield loss, generating the highest net return and MRR for this planting date. The 15 May planting was more vulnerable to A. devastans damage and 1.0 AT generated the highest net return and MRR with four applications as compared with all other ATs.These results suggest that the use of planting time-based ATs can improve cotton yield through cost-effective applications of insecticides.

Coffee culture, one of the main agricultural activities in Brazil, has undergone recent negative impacts due to unfavorable climate conditions, with a subnormal rainy period and increased temperatures during the second half of 2015.The coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari, 1867) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is one of the main insect pests of coffee crops worldwide. The present research aimed to determine the climate zones for coffee berry borer in the state of São Paulo, based on its thermal requirements. The results showed that the mean biological development time of H. hampei was affected by temperature, completing its life cycle more rapidly in increased temperatures until the 30°C threshold temperature, and more slowly above this temperature. Development time (egg–adult) was inversely related to temperature in the range between 18 and 32°C. The temperature threshold (T_t) was 13.9°C and the thermal constant (K) was 299 degree-days.These laboratory estimates of thermal requirements and the Geographic Information System (GIS) were used to generate insect life span distribution maps for São Paulo. In this state, the coffee berry borer can produce 5.09–10.53 generations annually. Higher pest incidences should coincide with both temperature increases and the availability of coffee fruit for infestation.The data obtained can be used to estimate the monthly and yearly number of generations of this pest, for use in integrated pest management programs.

In the High Plains, sugarcane aphid, Melanaphis sacchari Zehntner (Hemiptera: Aphididae), colonize grain sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L) Moench (Cyperales: Poaceae), when it is in reproductive stages and aphid populations increase rapidly. Sugarcane aphid management recommendations based on aphid densities have been implemented in southern United States, but have not been assessed in the High Plains. Therefore, the goal of this work was to validate whether these guidelines can provide effective suppression of the aphids and improve yield. In a 2-y field experiment, sorghum susceptible (DKS44-20) and resistant (DKS37-07) to sugarcane aphids, with and without insecticide (clothianidin) seed treatments, was exposed to natural aphid infestations and treated with a foliar insecticide (flupyradifurone) once sugarcane aphid densities exceeded 50 per leaf. Further, to assess the effects of these tactics on sorghum yield, data were collected from plots that were not treated at the threshold. In both years, foliar insecticide applied at the density-based threshold decreased aphid numbers across sorghum hybrids with and without seed treatments and aphid densities remained below threshold for the remainder of the season. Yield of sorghum depended on sugarcane aphid pressure—when their densities were high (2016), the resistant hybrid with and without the foliar spray outperformed the unsprayed susceptible hybrid, while the susceptible hybrid had higher yields than resistant hybrid when sugarcane aphid pressure was low (2017). Outcomes of this work support the notion that a well-timed foliar application can alleviated losses in yield in sorghum in the Texas Panhandle and potentially other regions of the High Plains.

Models can be useful to help understand population dynamics of insects under diverse environmental conditions and in developing strategies to better manage pest species. Adult longevity and fecundity of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) were evaluated against a wide range of constant temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 37.5°C). The modified Sharpe and DeMichele model described adult aging rate and was used to estimate adult physiological age. Maximum fecundity of H. armigera was 973 eggs per female at 25°C decreasing to 72 eggs per female at 37.5°C.The relationship between adult fecundity and temperature was well described by an extreme value function. Age-specific cumulative oviposition rate and age-specific survival rate were well described by a two-parameter Weibull function and sigmoid function, respectively. An oviposition model was developed using three temperature-dependent components: total fecundity, age-specific oviposition rate, and age-specific survival rate.The oviposition model was validated against independent field data and described the pattern of field occurrence of H. armigera egg numbers very well. Our model will be a useful component for population modeling of H. armigera and can be independently used for the timing of sprays in management programs targeting this key pest species.

The kudzu bug, Megacopta cribraria (F.) (Heteroptera: Plataspidae), is an invasive pest of soybeans in the southeastern United States. Two greenhouse choice assays evaluated crop species and growth stage-specific orientation preference of kudzu bug adults to six different legume species (Fabales: Fabaceae) at four plant growth stages (V2, V4, R1, and R5). Adults had differential orientation to both legume species and plant growth stages tested. Adults preferred the R1 stage of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) and lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus (L.)), but preferred various growth stages of the other legumes tested. Given their respective attractive growth stages, adults significantly preferred lima bean (47.8%) to soybean (21.9%) and kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris (L.), 19.2%), and preferred mung bean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek, 4.2%), black-eyed pea (Vigna unguiculata subsp. unguiculata (L.) Walp, 4.7%), and green bean (Phaseolus vulgaris (L.), 2.7%) the least. In no-choice assays, females deposited a similar number of eggs on each legume species, except for green bean and kidney bean, on which they deposited the fewest eggs. Eggs laid by females feeding on soybean (67.9%), lima bean (58.1%), and mung bean (42.6%) had significantly greater hatch rates than eggs laid by females feeding on the other legume species. No-choice assays also showed that nymphs completed development to adults on soybean, lima bean, and mung bean; yet, survival was greatest on soybean. Results show that females fed and oviposited on all of the legume species tested; however, plant species significantly affected egg hatch rates and nymphal survival.

The pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), presents a dual threat to commercial pulse growers because it can inflict direct injury through feeding and indirect injury as a vector of two important viruses, Pea enation mosaic virus (PEMV) and Bean leafroll virus (BLRV). A decision support system is needed to help producers manage both of these threats in pulses. To address these gaps in lentil, Lens culinaris (Medikus) (Fabales: Fabaceae), we conducted field experiments near Moscow, Idaho in 2011 and 2012 with three objectives: 1) determine economic injury levels (EILs) for pea aphid in lentil based on the direct effects of their feeding on yield, 2) develop economic guidelines for treating aphids carrying PEMV or BLRV based on the impact on yield of virus inoculation at different times after crop emergence, and 3) provide a framework for using both of these decision tools as part of a comprehensive approach to pea aphid management in lentil. EILs were determined based on data from replicated field cage trials over 2 yr. Windows of economic vulnerability to viruses were determined based on artificial inoculation with viruses at different days after crop emergence over 2 yr. Both direct and indirect injury support tools can be parameterized with potential yields, market prices, and the costs of insecticide applications to guide treatment decisions. Together, the two tools comprise a decision support system for managing pea aphid acting as both a direct pest and as a vector of the viruses in lentils in the Palouse region of northern Idaho and southeastern Washington State.

The corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is only moderately susceptible to most toxins from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) expressed in transgenic corn. To better understand the impact of Bt corn on the life cycle of H. zea, we collected pupae of H. zea during 2014–2016 in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Mississippi from corn hybrids expressing Cry1Ab, Cry1F, Cry1F + Cry1Ab, Cry1F + Cry1Ab + Vip3Aa20, Cry1A.105 + Cry2Ab2, and Cry1A.105 + Cry2Ab2 + Cry1F, as well as from non-Bt near-isolines. We investigated the effect of Bt corn on pupal weight, fecundity, and egg viability of H. zea. Pupal weights were significantly reduced for males and females from all Bt hybrids compared with non-Bt near-isolines. Female pupae from the hybrid expressing Cry1F + Cry1Ab were also significantly lighter relative to those from the near-isolines expressing only Cry1F. Reductions in pupal weight did not result in any detectable effects on fecundity or egg viability.The reduction in pupal weight in the hybrids expressing Cry1F and Cry1F + Cry1Ab significantly declined over time in South Carolina, possibly indicating developing resistance to these Bt toxins. These data can be incorporated into insect resistance management models used to improve risk management decisions regarding H. zea in Bt crops in the complex landscapes of the southern United States.

Aerosol application of insecticides as part of an integrated pest management program is becoming more widely adopted in food facilities such as flour mills. However, the method of application and the complex structural features within a facility can impact how insecticide particles travel and settle on surfaces and therefore impact the consistency in efficacy obtained. Here we investigated how the location from which an aerosol insecticide is released impacts the spatial pattern of aerosol deposition, using efficacy against Tribolium confusum Jacquelin du Val (Coleoptera:Tenebrionidae), the confused flour beetle, as a model insects. Concrete bioassay arenas containing T. confusum adults and flour were exposed to two commercial aerosol formulations, pyrethrin + pyriproxyfen and pyrethrin + methoprene, and observed for initial adult knockdown and subsequent mortality. Aerosols were applied from one of three static locations or a fourth application comprised of multiple aerosol release points. The aerosol release position had a significant effect on T. confusum adult knockdown and mortality; both ranged from 0 to 100% depending on bioassay arena location. The multiple aerosol release positions tended to have more bioassay arenas with higher knockdown and mortality, and had a more consistent impact across all arena locations, yet there were still areas on the mill floor where little adult beetle efficacy was observed. The effect of each aerosol on T. confusum adults is a culmination of how the aerosol was applied, the distance the aerosol particles traveled, and the complexity of a milling facility.

The rice stalk stink bug Tibraca limbativentris Stal, 1860 (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is an important pest of paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.) in South America. Current records of economic injury levels (EILs) and economic thresholds (ETs) for this insect are scarce. In this study, we determined EILs and ETs through cumulative insect-days of T. limbativentris adults in two phenological stages of paddy rice. Five field trials were established for the 2015/16 and 2016/17 crop season. To evaluate the relationship between insect-day and yield, rice plants were infested at V4 and R2 with adult male–female pairs of T. limbativentris. Mixed linear models were fitted utilizing the year and block as random factors to estimate the damage to plant, irrespective of the interference of environmental factors. The yield loss per insect-day was then used to calculate EILs using current market values and control costs. Rice grain yields were reduced by 5.91 kg/ha for each insect-day/m² when infested during V4 stage, with EILs ranging from 3.88 to 11.61 insect-days/m², while infestation during R2 stage resulted in a yield reduction of 3.16 kg/ha, with EILs ranging from 8.05 to 21.72 insect-days/m².The results indicate that yield losses of paddy rice due to T. limbativentris infestation vary according to plant phenological stages and management should consider control cost and market value of rice. These EILs and ETs based on insect-days may be an efficient strategy for decision-making in the management of T. limbativentris on paddy rice.

Diaphania angustalis Snellen (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) has emerged as a very important pest of blackboard tree, Alstonia scholaris (L.) R. Br. (Apocynaceae), in China during the last two decades. Understanding its biology and behavior is crucial for designing effective and environmentally friendly pest management strategies. Under laboratory conditions [25–28°C, 12:12 (L:D) h, 75–80% RH], adults emerged during both light and dark hours with peak emergence occurring between the first and fifth hours of scotophase, and unmated males and females lived for a mean (±SE) 5.4 ± 0.4 and 5.3 ± 0.7 d, respectively. Female calling behavior was observed only during scotophase (peaking in the fifth hour) by 1- to 5-d-old females, and mating activities occurred 2–5 d after emergence, peaking on day 3. These behavioral characteristics could inform control programs targeting adults.

Invasions by insects introduced via international trade continue to cause worldwide impacts. Surveillance programs using traps baited with host volatiles and pheromones can detect incursions of nonnative species. We report on two experiments executed to determine if attractants for several insect species can be combined without compromising trap catches and detection ability of target species. In the first experiment, we tested the effect of bark beetle pheromones (plus α-pinene) and trap contact with foliage on trap catches of the brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys Stål (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in traps baited with a mixture of bisabolenes and methyl (E,E,Z)-2,4,6-decatrienoate. Trap capture of H. halys adults was greater in traps not in contact with foliage, and the bark beetle pheromones ipsenol and ipsdienol did not affect trap capture of H. halys. In the second experiment, we tested the effects of multi-lure interactions among the primary host attractants α-pinene and ethanol, and the pheromones monochamol, ipsenol, ipsdienol, lanierone, and the H. halys compounds, on trap captures of various forest and agricultural insect pests. Specifically, we targeted Monochamus spp. (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), Ips spp. (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) and H. halys. We found that a combination of all lures did not catch significantly lower numbers of Monochamus carolinensis Olivier, Monochamus scutellatus Say (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), and Ips pini Say (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) than lure combinations missing components although removal of both lanierone and ipsdienol somewhat increased catches of Ips grandicollis Eichhoff (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Our results support the use of traps baited with a full combination of these attractants in surveillance programs. This should reduce costs and increase detection rates of a wider range of conifer forest pests and H. halys.

Feeding damage by arthropods exposes plants to pathogens and interferes with plant physiological processes. Feeding by the citrus leafminer (CLM), Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), larva exposes leaf cuticle to the causal pathogens of the citrus canker disease. We investigated the impact of larval feeding on photosynthetic rate (Pn), CO₂ exchange rate (Ci), and H₂O exchange rate (Wi) in eight citrus cultivars [Citrus mandarins (Kinnow, Seedless Kinnow, Feutrell's early), Citrus sinensis (Succari, Salustiana), Citrus tangerines (Fairchild), Citrus limon (China lemon), and Citrus paradisi Macfad (Grapefruit)] under natural conditions in comparison with control plants protected from larval feeding. The effects on gas exchange parameters were tested by allowing the single first instar larvae per leaf to feed till pupation at the rate of three leaves per plant and 10 plants per cultivar. A consistent reduction in leaf Pn, Ci, and Wi rates with larval development through 19 d was observed in all cultivars except Grapefruit in which all three parameters decreased through 13 d and then increased consistently through 19 d. Reductions in Pn, Ci, and Wi were significantly correlated. All three parameters of CLM-infested plants were reduced significantly compared to their levels in control plants except Pn in Kinnow, China lemon, and Grapefruit; Ci in Grapefruit; and Wi in Succari. Pn was reduced most in Fairchild, whereas Ci and Wi were reduced most in China lemon. The consequences of these physiological alterations in regions with high CLM populations could be even more intense and negatively impact plant health, tolerance to pests and diseases, and yield.

Edamame, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, consumption continues to rise in the United States. Improved understanding of production threats, including insect pests, could facilitate increasing production of edamame in the north-central United States. Two years of complimentary field and laboratory experiments were performed to assess insect pest populations on commercially available edamame varieties. Fourteen varieties of edamame and four grain-type soybean varieties were tested in the laboratory with soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), and subsets of these varieties were tested in the field with naturally occurring insect populations. In the laboratory, mean aphid densities on the edamame varieties Agate and Chiba Green did not differ from the aphid-resistant grain-type soybean. Among edamame, aphid densities on Agate, Chiba Green, and Kuroshinju were significantly lower than on Hokkaido Black. In both years of the field experiment, aphid densities were significantly lower on the aphid-resistant grain-type compared to all others varieties. In 2016, aphid populations on edamame varieties did not differ from the aphid-susceptible grain-types. However, in 2017 with greater aphid exposure, differences were seen among edamame varieties, and between edamame and aphid-susceptible grain-types. In both years, potato leafhopper, Empoasca fabae (Harris) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), densities tended to be higher on edamame varieties compared to grain-types, and varied significantly among edamame varieties. In a laboratory study, differences were seen among varieties in mean density of trichomes, with grain-types generally having more trichomes than edamame. Results of this research will provide a foundation for development of production recommendations for edamame in the north-central United States.

The larval developmental environment can affect the quality of artificially reared insects used in pest control programs that apply the sterile insect technique. We used a liquid larval diet lacking corncob fractions (an ingredient which may be contaminated by toxins that inhibit larval development and drastically reduce insect production in mass-rearing facilities) to examine quality indicators of Anastrepha ludens (Loew) (Diptera: Tephritidae) as a function of larval density (1–5 larvae per ml of diet) and on two types of supporting materials (synthetic sponge and carpet felt) compared with a standard solid diet with corncob fractions inoculated with a fixed quantity of A. ludens eggs. Pupal weight and adult emergence of A. ludens reared on a liquid artificial diet were negatively and positively density dependent, respectively. One tray of solid diet produced an average (95% CI) of 689.5 (594.4, 794.3) pupae, whereas one tray of liquid diet with synthetic sponge and carpet felt produced an average of 266.0 (208.7, 332.9) and 43.7 (23.2, 73.9) pupae, respectively. Pupal weight and adult emergence of flies reared on the solid diet were atypically low probably due to the type of rearing tray used, whereas pupal weight and adult emergence on liquid diet were equal to, or exceeded 20 mg and a proportion of 0.93, respectively. The highest proportion of adults capable of flight was observed in the liquid diet with carpet felt. The potential causes by which larval density and support substrate affected productivity and quality of A. ludens reared on liquid diet are discussed.

Queensland fruit fly (‘Q-fly’), Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is the most destructive insect pest of horticultural crops in Australia. The sterile insect technique (SIT) has attracted significant interest for sustainable management of Q-fly through the mass rearing and release of sterile flies. Cost-effective diets are required to rear Q-flies for SIT. Wheat germ oil (WGO) is the main source of fatty acids and vitamins in gel larval diets that are used to rear Q-fly but is an expensive ingredient. With the aim of reducing WGO cost in gel larval diet, we assessed performance of Q-flies reared on diets that varied in WGO content. Q-fly larvae were reared on two diets that differed mainly in yeast composition (‘gel diet 2006′ and ‘gel diet 2009′) and contained 0, 0.03, 0.07, 0.11, 0.15, or 1% WGO to identify reduced concentrations of WGO (and hence cost) without compromising productivity or quality. Diets containing WGO outperformed diets without WGO in development rate, pupal number, adult emergence, percentage of fliers, rate of fliers, and fecundity. Concentrations of 0.11% and above provided full benefit in gel diet 2006 (original formulation 0.15%), and concentrations of 0.15% (original formulation 1.0%) and above provided full benefit in gel diet 2009, and for both diets, a concentration-dependent decline in fly performance resulted from lower doses. Savings can be made in gel diets for mass rearing of Q-fly without compromising productivity by reducing WGO concentration.

Imago dispersal by the West Indian drywood termite, Cryptotermes brevis (Walker) (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae) potentially initiates or expands structural infestations by the establishment of incipient colonies. The prevention of drywood termite colonization in structures is difficult, but a substantial reduction may be obtainable. In this experiment, seasonal dispersal of C. brevis imagos commenced from infested wood in a laboratory building. A bioassay was developed to determine the efficacy of 100, 50, and 10% label rate applications of a borate (Tim-Bor) and silica (CimeXa) dust or solution against C. brevis colony establishment under these simulated field conditions. All treatments prevented colony establishment at label rate applications, whereas Tim-bor significantly reduced colonization at all exposure rates.

Subterranean termites often transport soil into bait stations. In this study, we hypothesize that adding soil or clay material in the bait may affect preference and performance of termites. Choice and no-choice tests were conducted in the laboratory to investigate the aggregation and feeding preference, survivorship, wood consumption, and body water percentage of termites in response to food containers (here we simulated the bait station by placing a wood block into a bigger plastic box with termite-entering holes on the wall) with the void space filled with soil (sandy clay loam), clay material (sodium bentonite), or remained unfilled. Choice tests showed that under low-moisture conditions, food containers filled with clay attracted significantly more termites (Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Blattodea: Rhinotermitidae) and Reticulitermes guangzhouensis Ping (Blattodea: Rhinotermitidae)) compared to food containers filled with soil, or unfilled. Under medium-moisture conditions, however, the percentages of termites that aggregated in the food containers filled with soil or clay were similar, and both were significant higher than the percentages in unfilled ones. In no-choice tests, the highest survivorship and wood consumption in C. formosanus were recorded under medium-moisture conditions and when food containers were filled with clay, whereas the lowest survivorship and wood consumption were recorded under low-moisture conditions and when food containers were filled with soil. Interestingly, presence of clay increased the body water percentage of termites. Our study enhances the understanding of the foraging ecology of subterranean termites, and may contribute to the improvement of termite-baiting technologies.

Workers of three termite species, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Blattodea: Rhinotermitidae), Coptotermes gestroi (Wasmann) (Blattodea: Rhinotermitidae), and Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) (Blattodea: Rhinotermitidae), were force-fed with cellulose media pads treated with 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) alone and in combination with noviflumuron for 3 d to examine their mortality time trends up to 14 d (including 3-d exposure time). Termites exhibited symptoms of hyperecdysonism before the onset of death. The times required for 20E to fully express its effects were 10–13 d for C. formosanus, 13–14 d for C. gestroi, and 11–13 d for R. flavipes. Higher 20E concentrations resulted in higher mortalities at 14 d, and the addition of noviflumuron generally yielded higher mortalities. The lethal time of 20E was similar to chitin synthesis inhibitors such as noviflumuron than metabolic inhibitors, and the 10–14 d lethal time may be sufficient for 20E-affected termites to return to the central nest before the onset of hyperecdysonism and ultimate death. As an active ingredient in baiting systems, 20E has shown potential to reduce the colony elimination time.

This study evaluated the impact of a non-repellent liquid termiticide (fipronil) and a chitin synthesis inhibitor (CSI) termite bait (noviflumuron) on whole colonies of Coptotermes gestroi (Wasmann) (Blattodea: Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) in laboratory conditions, over a 12-m foraging distance.The protocol simulated the implementation of remedial treatment of an infested structure, where the colony has multiple access routes, and where only a portion of the population was directly exposed to the treatment. Within 2 wk after the implementation of fipronil, all termites within 1.5 m away from the treatment died.The accumulation of cadavers near the treated area resulted in secondary repellency and the colonies avoided the treated area for the remaining 10 wk of the experiment, using alternative foraging galleries. At the end of the 12 wk, colonies exposed to fipronil did not have any difference in population size compared with control colonies. Comparatively, colonies exposed to noviflumuron had no change in foraging activity for the first ≈40 d, but then termites progressively ceased their activity throughout their foraging territory. By 12 wk, noviflumuron-exposed colonies were near-elimination, with only a few workers, soldiers remaining, and all colonies were eliminated by 95 d. This study shows that subterranean termite colonies with access to CSI baits are inevitably eliminated, regardless of the position of the bait, while colonies exposed to fipronil are only locally excluded from the area near the treatment, but may maintain their foraging activity in untreated areas, and retain their potential risk for structural damage in the long term.

The annual bluegrass weevil, Listronotus maculicollis (Kirby) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is the most difficult to control insect pest on golf courses in eastern North America. Insecticide resistance, particularly to pyrethroids, is a serious and expanding issue in its management. Optimal diagnostic tools for resistance detection are crucial for efficient resistance monitoring and mitigation. Developed vial and Petri dish assays clearly separated different resistance levels among weevil populations. With the pyrethroid bifenthrin, susceptible, moderately resistant (resistance ratios, RR₅₀s 12.2–95.7), and highly resistant (RR₅₀s 258.2–1760.9) populations were distinguished. With the organophosphate chlorpyrifos, susceptible, tolerant (RR₅₀s 2.4–6.7), and resistant (RR₅₀s 8.8–120.7) populations were distinguished. In validation assays, several bifenthrin and chlorpyrifos concentrations were needed to separate resistance levels in Petri dish (bifenthrin: 112.2 and 336.3 or 3,362.5 mg AI/m²; chlorpyrifos: 3.4 and 33.6 mg AI/m²) and vial (bifenthrin: 112.1 or 1,120.8 mg AI/m²; chlorpyrifos: 2.2 and 11.2 mg AI/m²) assays. The Petri dish assay with formulated bifenthrin and chlorpyrifos was the best option for L. maculicollis resistance detection and monitoring. It demonstrated sufficient discriminating power, accurately reflected resistance levels, and was easier to conduct. A single diagnostic concentration sufficed to separate susceptible and resistant populations.To determine different resistance or tolerance levels, two to three concentrations were necessary.

Pest management for the glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca vitripennis Germar (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), in Kern County, California relies on the application of insecticides. These treatments have contributed to low H. vitripennis field counts since applications were initiated in 2001. However, densities have been high in recent years despite continued management, prompting efforts to evaluate the susceptibility of current populations to insecticides. H. vitripennis adults were subjected to bioassays with five commonly applied insecticides, and the results were compared to baseline toxicities determined in 2002. Two neonicotinoids, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam, were evaluated using systemic uptake bioassays. Contact toxicities of the neonicotinoid acetamiprid and pyrethroids bifenthrin and fenpropathrin were estimated using leaf dip bioassays. Dose-mortality responses were analyzed by probit analysis. For each compound, there was no significant difference in annual LC₅₀ values determined over 2 yr. Compared to baseline toxicities, acetamiprid and bifenthrin were found to be significantly less toxic to H. vitripennis.The LC₅₀ values of these two compounds increased sevenfold and 152-fold, respectively. Tests with the neonicotinoids revealed a trend of decreasing susceptibility levels within each season followed by reversion back to early season LC₅₀ estimates in the following year. In addition, data showed seasonal and site variation in susceptibility to imidacloprid, possibly due to differential applications in nearby fields.

Plants genetically modified to produce insecticidal toxins from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bt) have been extensively used to manage the western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in the United States. Evolution of WCR resistance to Bt toxins has forced the consideration of alternative pest management and improved insect resistance management. Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs), obligate insect parasites, are attracted toward volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by maize roots after WCR herbivory.The production of VOCs of two types of Bt maize (MON88017 and MIR604) and their near-isolines was evaluated after induction with Bt-susceptible and resistant WCR.The attraction of EPNs toward the Bt hybrids was tested in the laboratory and the field. Bt hybrids emitted VOCs when induced by Bt-resistant insects whereas induction by Bt-susceptible WCR did not elicit a plant response. Survival of Bt-resistant WCR was lower on the hybrid attracting EPNs and similar to the survival of Bt-susceptible WCR without EPNs. This trade-off of Bt-resistance is defined here as an induced fitness cost, and offers a viable tool to management of Bt-resistant WCR.

The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), is a serious pest of rice. At present, the application of chemical insecticides is the main control option for this pest. BPH has evolved resistance to various classes of insecticides. Cycloxaprid, a new oxabridged cis-configuration neonicotinoid insecticide, is a (nitromethylene) imidazole analog of imidacloprid. This study focused on the baseline susceptibility to cycloxaprid of 18 field samples of N. lugens collected from nine geographical locations in China, as well as possible cross-resistances between cycloxaprid and other important neonicotinoids in one laboratory-selected resistant strain of N. lugens to imidacloprid.The median lethal concentration (LC₅₀) of cycloxaprid for the 18 samples ranged from 1.26 to 14.90 mg/liter. Furthermore, the cross-resistance studies showed that the imidacloprid-resistant strain exhibited a 27.63-fold resistance to imidacloprid and lower levels of cross-resistance to acetamiprid (16.64-fold), thiacloprid (12.64-fold), and nitenpyram (16.90-fold); however, there was no cross-resistance to cycloxaprid (1.92-fold). These results indicate that cycloxaprid could be an effective alternative insecticide for the management of N. lugens, which is urgently needed to prevent or delay further increases in insecticide resistance in N. lugens.

The population dynamics of the blister beetle, Epicauta impressicornis (Pic) (Coleoptera: Meloidae) had been investigated from 2014 to 2016 in field. The results showed that E. impressicornis is univoltine and overwintered in the fifth instar in the Luodian area of Guizhou, China. The biological and ecological characteristic of the beetle were analyzed at six temperatures (i.e., 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, and 36°C) in the laboratory using the age-stage, two-sex life table. The developmental duration, longevity, and total preoviposition period were significantly shortened with increases in temperatures. The adult preoviposition periods at 24, 27, and 30°C were significantly longer than at other temperatures, while the fecundities at 27 and 30°C were significantly higher than at other temperatures. Life expectancy (e_xj) decreased with age and the reproductive value (v_xj) increased with age.The intrinsic rate of increase (r = 0.0921 d^-1) and finite rate (λ = 1.0965 d^-1) were the highest at 33°C, followed by 30°C (r = 0.0758 d^-1, λ = 1.0788 d^-1). Although the net reproductive rate (R₀ = 17.63 offspring) was the lowest at 36°C, the values of r (0.0724 d^-1) and λ (1.0751 d^-1) were higher at 36°C than those at 21, 24, and 27°C. Our analysis for a mass-rearing system showed the most efficient and economical strategy would be to rear E. impressicornis at 30–33°C.

Malaria is a serious mosquito-borne disease transmitted to humans by Anopheles mosquitoes. Seven species of Anopheles are important malaria vectors in Thailand and all remain susceptible to pyrethroid insecticides, despite decades of use in public health mosquito control programs. However, for a more refined and accurate approach to temporal monitoring of susceptibility patterns to commonly used pyrethroids to control adult Anopheles mosquitoes, it is preferred to have specific concentrations for more discriminating testing. A laboratory strain of Anopheles minimus Theobald was used to establish baseline concentrations for susceptibility to six different synthetic pyrethroids—deltamethrin, permethrin, bifenthrin, cypermethrin, α-cypermethrin, and λ-cyhalothrin using the World Health Organization (WHO) adult bioassay system. Final discriminating concentrations of each active ingredient were determined based on doubling LC₉₉ for each chemical to arrive at the following percent concentrations: deltamethrin (0.009%), permethrin (0.551%), bifenthrin (0.12%), cypermethrin (0.104%), α-cypermethrin (0.034%), and λ-cyhalothrin (0.019%). For permethrin, deltamethrin, α-cypermethrin, and λ-cyhalothrin, all revised percentages were lower than currently recommended discriminating concentrations by WHO. Using the newly derived concentrations, insecticide susceptibility tests were followed in a field population of An. minimus s.l. from Kanchanaburi Province. Deltamethrin, bifenthrin, and λ-cyhalothrin produced 100% kill, whereas permethrin, cypermethrin, and α-cypermethrin gave between 92.9 and 97.7% mortality, indicating lower sensitivity (tolerance). Routine monitoring of insecticide susceptibility in An. minimus wild populations throughout Thailand should continue to ensure that insecticides in use are effective to control this vector species.

Insect mass-rearing is an essential requirement for the sterile insect technique. Production at a large scale requires the development of standardized rearing procedures to produce good quality males able to compete with wild males to mate with wild females. Three sets of experiments (using trays placed on the table, the whole tray-rack system, and climate-controlled chambers) have been conducted aiming to determine the optimal water temperature and number of eggs to aliquot into each larval rearing tray to achieve the highest production of pupae. No difference was found in time to pupation, sex ratio, or male body size as a result of altering larval density. However, higher larval densities resulted in decreased emergence rate and female body size. A constant water temperature of 22°C delayed hatching and did not allow Anopheles arabiensis to complete larval development. Hatching eggs in water at 22°C and then increasing water temperature to 27°C resulted in decreased pupae production compared to eggs hatched and larvae maintained at a water temperature of 27°C throughout. Water temperature and larval density affected the production parameters of An. arabiensis mosquitoes, which has implications for mass release programs. We conclude that 4,000 eggs per 4 liter and a water temperature of 27°C were the optimal conditions for mass-rearing this mosquito species which yielded 105,000 pupae/larval rearing unit.These results are valuable information in the development of standard operation procedures for the efficient large-scale rearing of An. arabiensis mosquitoes.

In insects, superoxide dismutases (SODs) play a critical role in the scavenging of harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS) and protecting against oxidative stress induced by various environmental stresses. The Asiatic rice borer, Chilo suppressalis (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is an economically important insect pest of rice crops. In this study, a mitochondrial manganese SOD (Cs-mMnSOD) gene was characterized in C. suppressalis.The deduced Cs-mMnSOD protein has typical highly conserved features of mitochondrial manganese SODs, including four manganese binding residues, the signature DVWEHAYY peptide, and a mitochondrial-targeting sequence at the N-terminus. Transcription of Cs-mMnSOD was detectable at all developmental stages, but highest in pupae. Furthermore, the mRNA level of Cs-mMnSOD was strongly upregulated (more than twofold increase) following exposure to low and high temperatures (4, 30 and 35°C), insecticides (chlorpyrifos and chlorantraniliprole), and chemical reagents (cumene hydroperoxide, paraquat, H₂O₂ and CdCl₂), but slightly elevated (less than twofold increase) in response to 8°C, abamectin and CuSO₄. Additionally, the Cs-mMnSOD transcription results were consistent with the enzymatic activity data of the protein product. Purified recombinant Cs-mMnSOD protein expressed in Escherichia coli displayed SOD activity and thermostability. Furthermore, E. coli cells overexpressing Cs-mMnSOD exhibited long-term resistance to the oxidative inducers cumene hydroperoxide and paraquat. Our findings indicate that Cs-mMnSOD plays an important role in protecting C. suppressalis against oxidative damage.

Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), also known as the Asian citrus psyllid, is a vector of the citrus huanglongbing (HLB) disease. D. citri transmits all three known strains of the HLB pathogen: Candidatus Liberibacter africanus, Candidatus Liberibacter americanus, and Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus.The study involved 92 psyllids representing the Caribbean Basin and reference samples representing countries within Asia, North America, and South America. This study was aimed at characterizing D. citri on a molecular level in order to determine the haplotype diversity and uniqueness within Jamaica and the Caribbean Basin. D. citri-specific primers were used to amplify an 821 bp gene fragment from the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (mtCOI). The statistical parsimony program, TCS, was used to determine the 12 haplotypes found within the Caribbean, with haplotypes H2 and H7 being the most prominent.The H2 haplotype was found to belong to the South Western Asia group originating from India. H2 represented 54% of the sequenced samples and dominated the Greater Antilles, 22% were grouped as H7, dominating the Lesser Antilles, while the remaining 24% of the sequences were grouped in the remaining 10 haplotypes and were variants seen within the Greater and Lesser Antilles.

Wild relatives of crops are an important source of resistance genes against insect pests. However, it is important to identify the accessions of wild relatives with different mechanisms of resistance to broaden the basis and increase the levels of resistance to insect pests.Therefore, we evaluated 15 accessions of wild relatives of chickpea belonging to seven species and five genotypes of cultivated chickpea for their resistance to pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera, which is the most damaging pest of chickpea. The test genotypes were evaluated for resistance to H. armigera using detached pod assay. Data were also recorded on activity of the digestive enzymes in the midgut of the larvae fed on different wild relatives of chickpea. All the wild chickpea genotypes suffered lower pod damage and weight gained by the third-instar larvae of H. armigera was lower when fed on them compared with the cultivated chickpea. The accessions, IG 69979 (Cicer cuneatum), PI 599066, IG 70006, IG 70018, IG 70022 (Cicer bijugum), IG 599076 (Cicer chrossanicum), and IG 72933, IG 72953 (Cicer reticulatum), showed high levels of resistance to H. armigera. There were significant differences in protease activity in larval gut of H. armigera fed on different wild relatives of chickpea. Total protease, trypsin, and chymotrypsin activities were lowest in larva fed on PI 599066 (C. bijugum) compared with that in the larvae fed IG 69979 (C. cuneatum) and IG 70022 (C. bijugum). Aminopeptidase activity was highest in the larvae fed on IG 70022 (C. bijugum) and IG 599076 (C. chrossanicum), whereas lowest activity was recorded in the larvae fed on ICC 3137 and KAK 2 (susceptible checks). The variation in protease activities may be due to the presence of protease inhibitors in the wild relatives or hyperproduction of enzymes by the larvae as result of protease inhibitor activity of the wild relatives, resulting in low weight gain by larvae.The results suggested that wild relatives of chickpea with diverse mechanisms of resistance can be exploited to increase the levels and diversify the basis of resistance to H. armigera in cultivated chickpea.

The development of soybeans tolerant to the soybean aphid [Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae)] remains unexplored. The objectives of this research were to determine the susceptibility of two high-yielding soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill (Fabales: Fabaceae)] genotypes involved in a breeding platform to develop aphid-tolerant recombinant inbred lines (RILs); characterize the peroxidase activity and relative expression of peroxidase transcripts in the parents of RILs; and identify an assay to phenotype aphid-tolerant RILs. Enzyme kinetic assays documented the total peroxidase activity for tolerant (KS4202), susceptible (SD76R), and two high-yielding (U09105007 and U11-611112) soybeans during two vegetative stages (V1 and V3) at three sampling days (D4, D6, and D8 after aphid introduction). Enzyme kinetic assays showed that V3 infested tolerant and U11-611112 plants had significantly higher peroxidase activity than their respective control plants at D4, and infested tolerant plants were also higher than control plants at D6.There were no apparent trends when comparing the expression of peroxidase-specific transcripts in the absence of aphids (basal levels) in both V1 and V3. Relative expression analyses of two peroxidase transcripts (PRX52 and PRX2) performed to compare differences among the soybean genotypes indicated that, despite basal levels being similar for the treatments analyzed, tolerant soybeans had a tendency for a higher expression of PRX52 in the presence of aphids. Based on the different patterns observed and the feasibility of analyses performed in this study, enzyme kinetics using V3 infested plants may be a marker for screening RILs in a breeding program targeting the development of aphid-tolerant soybeans.

Three hundred and ninety-one Gossypium hirsutum and 34 Gossypium barbadense accessions were screened for thrips resistance under field conditions at the Upper Coastal Plain Research Station in Rocky Mount, North Carolina in years 2014 and 2015. Visual damage ratings, thrips counts, and seedling dry weights were recorded at 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5 wk after planting, respectively. Population density and thrips arrival times varied between years. Data from the three separate damage scoring dates provided a better estimate of resistance or susceptibility to thrips than ratings from the individual dates over the season. Tobacco thrips [Frankliniella fusca (Hinds) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)], followed by western flower thrips [Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)], were the dominant thrips species observed in the study. Five resistant G. barbadense accessions and five moderately resistant upland cotton accessions were identified from field evaluations. Greenhouse experiments were conducted in Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 to determine if plant height, growth rate, leaf pubescence, and leaf area were significantly different in resistant and susceptible groups of G. hirsutum and G. barbadense accessions identified from the field screenings. Leaf pubescence and relative growth rate were significantly higher in resistant accessions compared with susceptible accessions in absence of thrips. There was no difference for plant height and leaf area between resistant and susceptible groups. Results suggest thrips-resistant plants have a possible competitive advantage through faster growth and higher trichome density, which limits thrips movement.

Stored products represent an enormous economic output, but insects regularly immigrate into stored products from the surrounding landscape throughout the postharvest supply chain. Long-lasting insecticide-incorporatednetting (LLIN), which usually contains an incorporated pyrethroid, has been used as part of a strategy to reduce the spread of malaria in tropical regions since the 1990s and has only recently been considered for its application in pre- and postharvest agricultural contexts. The goal of this study was to determine how short-term exposure to LLINs in the laboratory impacts the locomotory behavior and mortality for adult Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) red flour beetle, and Rhyzopertha dominica (Fauvel), (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) lesser grain borer, at different periods of time after exposure. Exposure to LLINs resulted in multiple-fold reductions in the distance moved and elevated angular velocity in both species that quickly took effect and persisted even after 168 h compared with adults exposed to control netting. R. dominica was somewhat more susceptible than T. castaneum to LLINs. Finally, the dispersal capacity of both species, measured as ability to move to a remote resource patch, was significantly impaired or absent after exposure to LLINs compared to adults exposed to control netting. Our results demonstrate that LLINs are a promising new technology for reducing infestation by stored product insects since even short exposures limit movement and ultimately lead to knockdown and death.

The present work was undertaken in three successive years in three different regions of Nigeria to study the impact of age on the postharvest biological performance of maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) adults infesting maize grain. Eight different age groups of S. zeamais adults which ranged from 1 to 56 d were used. The study assessed important parameters and was carried out using standard methods at mean temperature and relative humidity of 28.2°C and 87.5%, respectively. Results indicated that age affected bionomics of S. zeamais adult infesting maize grain in storage. The minimum age threshold for prolific oviposition in the females was 8 d. Weevils in the age groups 8–14 and 15–21 d showed highest fecundity. There was no effect of age on progeny emergence and development time for weevils younger than 36 d. Consequent upon infestation, only S. zeamais adults of ≤35 d old caused great damage and loss to grains in storage.The susceptibility of infesting weevil to cypermethrin was not greatly influenced by weevil age except at an elderly age of ≥43 d. Observations signal that weevil adults are physiologically fittest at ≤14 d old but indicate that adults of ≤35 d old pose the highest food security threat. The S. zeamais ecotype studied showed resistance to the pyrethroid insecticide at 24 h evaluation period and that also has implications for food security.

Pyralid moths, such as Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller) or Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), are among the pests of most concern in mills and food industries worldwide. One option for their control, which presents an alternative to the application of insecticides, is the release of natural enemies. Habrobracon hebetor (Say) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a larval parasitoid of pyralid moths that is commercially available for augmentative release in storehouses. They are delivered as adults that limit their performance. To improve their quality when released at the target location, a banker box has been developed consisting of a rearing box that optimizes the release of the parasitoid. In the present study, the nonpest larvae Galleria mellonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) have been used as a host, substituting for E. kuehniella larvae which were used in the previous design. The best results were obtained when a mixture of two larval sizes of the host were offered to the female parasitoid, producing five times more adults than with E. kuehniella larvae. Quality of the released parasitoids was optimal because they were delivered in the pupal stage inside the rearing box and adults began to emerge in situ. The banker box released adult parasitoids over a prolonged period of approximately 25 d at the target location.The use of this banker box may significantly help in the biological control of stored-product moths.

Hermetic storage technology using plastic liners is threatened by the boring action of Prostephanus truncatus Horn. (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae), a major insect pest of stored maize in sub-Saharan Africa. We investigated the performance of four brands of hermetic storage bags against adult P. truncatus in maize stored for 90 d under simulated resident and incoming infestation. Five treatments were used: four hermetic bag brands; SuperGrain Bag (SGB) IV-R, SGB Farm, Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bag, and Kuraray bag; and an ordinary plastic bag; each containing 50 kg of shelled maize. Two modes of insect infestation were used whereby 50 adult insects were introduced inside and outside the hermetic bags to simulate resident and incoming insect infestations, respectively. Parameters measured included carbon dioxide–oxygen levels, live adult P. truncatus numbers, grain moisture content, grain damage and weight loss, germination, and number of insect-induced perforations on plastic liners. Externally infested bags had no insect activity; all the introduced insects died of starvation. Internally infested bags were all perforated. The ordinary plastic liner was severely perforated with 151 insect-induced holes compared to hermetic plastic liners (<40 holes).There was no live adult insect infestation in grain samples collected using double-tube multi-slotted sampling probes inserted vertically several times. However, live adult insects were present in the bottom grain layer (0.05 m) of all plastic liners. There were no significant differences between hermetic bags regardless of mode of infestation for all parameters assessed. The results show that the tested hermetic bags are equally susceptible to perforations by resident P. truncatus.

The New World screwworm fly Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel, 1858) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is an important livestock pest endemic to the Americas that has been eradicated from North and continental Central America with a control program based on the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). The establishment of target management units is a strategic step in the implementation of new control programs, which can be achieved using genetic studies of natural populations. Previous studies of New World screwworm fly populations were conducted on the continental scale and identified four main groups: two in South America and two in the Caribbean. However, studies within these groups are needed to determine which smaller geographic areas can be treated as management units. Here, we analyze the genetic variability distribution and the population demographic signals of the New World screwworm fly in a 6,000 km² area located along the border of Brazil and Uruguay. This area was the subject of the first control pilot program conducted in South America. We studied eight microsatellite loci and sequences from two mitochondrial DNA regions in individuals sampled at 20–25 livestock breeding farms. We observed no population structure and found high genetic variability on the geographical scale sampled for both molecular markers. Our microsatellite data suggest that these populations are not in equilibrium, and demographic analyses based on mitochondrial data indicate population expansion.These results suggest that this geographic scale is not adequate for future New World screwworm fly management in South America.

The ability to predict key phenological stages of insect pests is of prime importance in sampling and management programs. Hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae (Annand) (Hemiptera: Adelgidae), is a non-native invasive pest of eastern and Carolina hemlock that is currently expanding its range westward through the central Appalachian region. We conducted intensive sampling of A. tsugae across four sites in West Virginia and western Maryland from March 2013 to May 2014, and developed a degree-day model (minimum temperature threshold of 4°C) to predict the temporal distribution of progrediens eggs, progrediens egg hatch, newly hatched sistens, and settled first-instar sistens. We then linked degree-day predictions to recent weather data collected from our study region from 2012 to 2016 to provide a range of calendar days over which these key phenological events occur. The initial occurrence of progrediens eggs and progrediens egg hatch is predicted to occur at 209 (mean date of 19 April) and 346 (mean date of 8 May) degree days, respectively.The initial occurrence of newly hatched sistens and settled first-instar sistens is predicted to occur at 852 (mean date of 19 June) and 1010 (mean date of 30 June) degree days, respectively. Because our study region represents a region in which A. tsugae continues to spread, this information should be useful in optimizing sampling programs and the timing of control tactics in the central Appalachian region.

The present study aims to investigate the susceptibility status of Aedes albopictus (Skuse) collected from residential areas in Sabah, Malaysia towards eight WHO-recommended dosages of larvicides representing the classes of organophosphates and organochlorines. Field and reference strains of Ae. albopictus larvae were bioassayed in accordance to WHO standard methods using diagnostic dosages of bromophos, malathion, fenthion, fenitrothion, temephos, chlorpyrifos, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), and dieldrin.The results revealed that Ae. albopictus was resistant (mortality < 90%) towards malathion, temephos, and DDT. In addition, most of the Ae. albopictus strains exhibited a wide range of susceptibilities against bromophos, with mortality ranged from 49.33 to 93.33%. On the contrary, only dieldrin was able to induce 100% mortality against all strains of Ae. albopictus. Tolerance to fenitrothion, fenthion, and chlorpyrifos, with mortality ranging from 81.33 to 97.33%, was also observed in this study.

Most scatter or granular toxic fly baits are intended to be used against house flies, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae). Attractants have been developed to make baits house fly-specific to avoid wasting bait on nontarget flies. Cyanarox Insecticidal Bait (IB) (formerly Zyrox Granular Fly Bait) appeared on the market recently and field reports suggested that stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae), were being attracted to the bait. There was little doubt that the toxicant, cyantraniliprole, which is formulated to kill house flies, should readily kill stable flies if enough is consumed, but it seemed highly unusual that blood-feeding stable flies would be attracted to the bait. Proof of concept tests were conducted to determine if stable flies would feed on Cyanarox IB. When confined in small cages, mortality exceeded 90% after a 3-d exposure. Stable flies (200) were released in each of two large windowless rooms and Cyanarox IB was placed in small containers at the label rate at floor level in four locations per room. Mortality reached 90% after a 5-d exposure, which indicated that stable flies were attracted to the bait, actively found it and fed on it. The Cyanarox IB Material Safety Data Sheet lists an undisclosed amount of sucrose as part of the bait composition. Stable flies are known to feed on many sugar sources in the environment and the sucrose associated with the Cyanarox IB may explain why stable flies find it attractive.

We conditioned colonies of Melanaphis sacchari (Zehntner, Hemiptera: Aphididae) to three different temperature regimes over a period of 2 mo: 30°C, 25°C, and a cycle of 18/8°C (L:D), all under a diurnal photoperiod of 12:12 (L:D). Plants of susceptible sorghum, 85Y40, were grown to the five-leaf stage in 4-liter pots, 2 per pot, and then infested with mixtures of second-fourth instar M. sacchari nymphs, either 50 (18/8°C treatment) or 100 (25 and 30°C treatments) aphids per plant. In each run of the experiment, a series of two to four plants of each treatment group were lowered to the desired cold temperature (4.0, 2.0, 0.0, -2.0, and -4.0°C) in a climate-controlled chamber and then evaluated for aphid survival after 12 h in complete darkness. Results revealed substantial survival of aphids from the 18/8 and 25°C conditioned treatments, even at -4.0°C, a temperature sufficient to kill the plants, and >90 and 60% survival, respectively, at 0.0°C. In contrast, aphids conditioned to 30°C experienced about 50% mortality at 4.0°C, and complete mortality at 0.0°C. Our results indicate that M. sacchari is able to survive periods of sub-freezing temperatures quite easily and will not suffer ‘cold-shock’ mortality unless subjected to a rapid drop in temperature from very warm conditions (e.g., 30°C or higher).Therefore, only temperatures that are cold enough to kill sorghum plants are likely to kill all apterous virginoparae of M. sacchari.

Hop looper, Hypena humuli Harris, can cause substantial defoliation and crop damage by feeding on hop leaves and cones. A 4-yr field study conducted in western Oregon evaluated the abundance of hop looper larvae and associated defoliation of leaves on plants fertilized with nitrogen rates ranging from 44.8 to 269 kg/ha. There was annual variation in abundance of hop looper and defoliation, with a tendency for increasing nitrogen rate to increase both abundance of hop looper and defoliation. A mixed model analysis with data combined from 2014 to 2017 found that abundance of hop looper was linearly related to nitrogen fertilizer rate, with a 2.5 increase in hop looper-days per kilogram of nitrogen fertilizer applied. Similarly, based on data from 2015 to 2017, defoliation associated with hop looper increased 0.031 percent with each kilogram of nitrogen fertilizer applied.Therefore, avoiding unduly high rates of nitrogen fertilizer may reduce the abundance and defoliation caused by hop looper. Further studies are needed to understand the mechanisms associated with nitrogen stimulation of hop looper.
