An adult male Fly River turtle, Carretochelys insculpta, presented with dull mentation and a proptosed right eye due to severe head trauma. Injuries included rostral mandibular, left mandibular, left maxillary, and bilateral orbital fractures. The right orbital fracture was repaired immediately. Radiography and computed tomography (CT) were performed to evaluate the extent of the fractures. The left mandibular fracture was repaired with an external skeletal fixator. The rostral mandibular fracture was repaired with pins and a cerclage wire. The use of CT provided complete evaluation of the skull fractures, was a guide for surgical planning, and allowed for monitoring of fracture healing. The turtle returned to normal behavior 2 months after surgery. The fractures were either healed or almost healed 6.5 months after surgery.

A six-year-old female Fiji Island banded iguana, Brachylophus fasciatus, and a nine-year-old female green iguana, Iguana iguana, were presented with anorexia and coelomic distension. Exploratory coeliotomies were performed in both individuals. The left ovaries were grossly abnormal, enlarged, and contained smaller fluid-filled vesicles. The abnormal tissue was resected and examined histologically. In both cases the histological diagnosis of benign ovarian teratoma was made. Both iguanas recovered well from surgery. Ten months post-surgery, both iguanas were clinically healthy.

Amphibian chytridiomycosis, caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), has been implicated in the decline and extinction of amphibian species worldwide, in addition to catastrophic losses of animals in captivity. Conservation of threatened amphibians, including captive breeding and maintenance of animals in zoos, research facilities, and private collections, requires effective control of pathogens. Several chemical compounds, including Formalite III^®, itraconazole, and chloramphenicol, have been used to treat amphibians infected with Bd, with varying levels of success. Here, we report successful clearance of Bd in five species of post-metamorphic anurans and one caudate species using terbinafine hydrochloride (HCl) in alcohol, which is available over the counter as Lamisil AT™ (Novartis Pharmaceuticals Inc., New York, NY). Treatments consisting of 5 min soak in fresh 0.01% or 0.005% terbinafine HCl in alcohol for either five consecutive days or for six treatments spread across 10 days successfully cleared Bd from 100% of 81 test subjects in eight trials. Our results indicate that terbinafine HCl in alcohol has a high therapeutic index as a treatment for Bd infection in living post-metamorphic amphibians.

Twenty-five ball pythons, Python regius, were anesthetized, and 25% of the spectacle was resected. Groups of five snakes were humanely euthanized at different times from 24 h to 3 months postoperatively; the eyes were removed and fixed in either formalin or Bouin's solution, and they were sectioned through the wound for histologic evaluation. Engorgement of the spectacular vessels with edema adjacent to the wound edges was observed immediately post-operatively, with this post-surgical response subsiding over several weeks. An amorphous plaque of homogenous proteinaceous material completely filled the defect within 24 h and allowed re-establishment of the subspectacular space and normal wetting of the corneal surface within 1 wk. A variable degree of inflammatory cell infiltration occurred immediately postoperatively and subsided over 30 days. The germinal epithelium of the spectacle migrated under the amorphous plaque by 3 wk post-operatively, re-establishing a germinal center for production of new spectacle material. Normal wound healing resulted in regeneration of normal spectacle morphology by 3 months post-operatively in all animals examined. Experimental animals did not seem to be at risk for a higher incidence of ocular or subspectacular infections as a direct result of partial spectaculectomy. We conclude that partial removal of the spectacle is a feasible procedure to gain access to the ocular compartment for treatment of ophthalmic disease.
