Abstract

The applied entomologist Fritz Peus (1904-1978) built a collection of fleas that was acquired by the Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Genève, Geneva, Switzerland in 1977; it contains type specimens of most of the flea taxa that he described. These type specimens are listed and the current combination given for each. The whereabouts of other type specimens is given where known. Type specimens that other entomologists exchanged with Peus and present in his collection are listed separately.

INTRODUCTION

The German entomologist Friedrich (Fritz) Ferdinand Christian Peus (1904-1978) was born in Siegen and studied in Münster (both in Westphalia), being awarded a doctorate in 1927. Specialising in blood-sucking flies, he worked as an applied entomologist before he joined the Diptera department of the natural history museum in Berlin (now the Museum für Naturkunde) in 1947, becoming curator of Diptera and Siphonaptera in 1949. In 1959 he became director of the zoological section until he left in 1961. From 1962 until 1969 he was professor of applied entomology at (West) Berlin University, and was instrumental in setting up the Institute for Applied Zoology (Schumann, 1980). Peus had a life-long interest in fleas, an order of insects parasitic on vertebrates. Even after retirement he carried on his entomological work, and made a major contribution to our knowledge of the flea fauna of Turkey (Keskin et al., 2018).

In 1977 the Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Genève (MHNG) acquired the Peus' personal flea collection of around 9700 slide preparations, which includes many type specimens. Peus is the author of two genus-level names and 66 species-level names (34 species and 32 subspecies), most of which are still regarded as valid. There is sometimes a discrepancy between the number of specimens mentioned in the original description and the number of specimens labelled as paratypes, but all of the slides labelled as paratypes have the same locality data and collector as those given in the original descriptions, and all have uniform identification labels.

ARRANGEMENT AND FORMAT

The taxa described by Fritz Peus are listed alphabetically. The locality data and number of specimens are listed verbatim, with the country names added in square brackets when not explicit. The holdings of the MHNG are enumerated, and other depositories of type specimens listed where they are known. Current nomenclature follows Hastriter & Bossard (2018).
