Abstract

Tracking population trends and understanding the distribution of understudied and elusive species can be difficult due to infrequent detections when surveying. We present detections of an elusive mesocarnivore; specifically, the first record of long-tailed weasels (Neogale frenata) in Hudspeth County, Texas. We surveyed ∼46,000 camera trap nights over 790 sites, spanning all nine counties in the Trans-Pecos eco-region. We documented this species in the arid landscape of the Trans-Pecos on 15 unique occasions between October 2014 and August 2018. As a locally understudied species, long-tailed weasel conservation will benefit from targeted surveying and monitoring in Texas to detect potential population changes.
