The Acanthocephala constitute a group of helminth parasites that, as adults, infect all classes of vertebrates. Adults of Neoechinorhynchus brentnickoli are parasites of Dormitator latifrons, a commercially important fish species in Tres Palos Lagoon, Guerrero, Mexico. The aim of this study was to describe features of the reproductive biology of this acanthocephalan. Fish were collected from Laguna de Tres Palos during February 2012 to February 2013. The number of fish that were examined (n=688) ranged from 35 (June) to 70 (August) in each collection. The prevalence of infection was more than 90% during this period and mean abundance varied significantly from 32.3 worms per fish (July 2012) to 89.3 worms per fish (March 2012). Acanthocephalans were reproductively active during the whole year. The stomach was the region of the digestive tract with the smallest percentage of helminths, and females were more abundant than males in all sections of the intestine. Larger male and female worms were always located in the more posterior sections of the digestive tract. The mean length at which 50% of individuals reached sexual maturity was 2.9 mm for females and 2.3 mm for males. Relative fecundity increased with length in females.

Blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) can alter the strength of byssal attachment and move between and within mussel aggregations on wave-swept shores, but this movement ability may be limited by epibiont fouling. We quantified the effects of artificial epibiont fouling on the production of byssal threads, attachment strength, and movement in two size classes of blue mussels. In a factorial experiment, large epibiont-covered mussels produced more functional byssal threads (i.e., those continuous from animal to substrate) after 24 h than large unfouled and small fouled mussels, but not more than small unfouled mussels. Small unfouled mussels formed and released more byssus bundles compared to any other treatment group, which indicates increased movement. Conversely, epibiont fouling resulted in decreased numbers of byssus bundles shed, and therefore reduced movement in small mussels. Epibiont-covered mussels started producing byssal threads sooner than unfouled mussels, while small mussels began producing byssal threads earlier compared to large mussels. Mean attachment strength from both size classes increased by 9.5% when mussels were artificially fouled, and large mussels had a 34% stronger attachment compared to small mussels. On the other hand, a 2.3% decrease in attachment strength was found with increasing byssus bundles shed. Our results suggest that fouling by artificial epibionts influences byssal thread production and attachment strength in large mussels, whereas epibionts on small mussels impact their ability to move. Mussels are able to respond rapidly to fouling, which carries implications for the dynamics of mussel beds in their intertidal and subtidal habitats, especially in relation to movement of mussels within and among aggregations.

Three species of glass sponges (Class Hexactinellida) form massive deep-water reefs by growing on the skeletons of past generations, with new growth largely vertical and away from sediment that buries the lower portions. Growth is therefore essential for reef health, but how glass sponges produce new skeleton or tissue is not known. We used fluorescence, light, and electron microscopy to study skeletal and tissue growth in the reef-forming glass sponge Aphrocallistes vastus. The sponge consists of a single large tube (the osculum), usually with several side branches, each of which can function as an effective excurrent vent. New tissue forms at the tips of each of these extensions, but how this occurs in a syncytial animal, and how the tubes expand laterally as the sponge gets larger, are both unknown. The fluorescent dye PDMPO labeled more spicule types in the tips of the sponge than elsewhere, indicating growth that was concentrated at the edge of the osculum. New tissue production was tracked using the thymidine analog EdU. EdU-labeled nuclei were found predominantly at the edge or lip of the osculum. In that region new flagellated chambers were formed from clusters of choanoblasts that spread out around the enlarging chamber. In cellular sponges clusters of choanocytes form flagellated chambers through several rounds of mitotic divisions, and also by immigration of mesohyl cells, to expand the chamber to full size. By contrast, chambers in glass sponges expand as choanoblasts produce enucleate collar bodies to fill them out. Growing chambers with enucleate structures may be an adaptation to life in the deep sea if chambers with cells, and therefore more nuclei, are costly to build.

Observations of natural spawning events are rare but critically important for the field of fertilization ecology. For broadcast spawners, knowing the natural behavior of spawning, including proximity of animals and the timing of spawning, is essential for informing spawning experiments and directing future study. Here we describe a natural spawning event that took place on the island of Maui in the winter of 2010. Groups of Tripnuestes gratilla were observed to spawn in the late afternoon shortly after a local high tide that was a lower high of a mixed, semidiurnal tide cycle. Urchins appeared to increase the probability of fertilization by ascending to the local high points of the reefs and spawning within groups of 2–5. Although the majority of the urchins that spawned were T. gratilla, two individuals of Echinothrix diadema were observed to spawn at the same time, raising questions about potential hybridization in the wild.

As the earth's climate has warmed, many tropical species have expanded their ranges poleward and encountered high-latitude seasonal temperature regimes, in which further permanent expansion is limited by physiological vulnerability to cold temperatures. The barnacle Megabalanus coccopoma is native to shorelines from Baja California to Peru and has been introduced to many locations worldwide, including the southeastern USA. The ability of larvae to develop successfully at local temperatures can be an important factor limiting the spread of invasive species. To determine if cold temperatures limited larval success near the northern range limit of M. coccopoma along the Atlantic southeastern USA coast, we measured lower temperature limits to larval development, examined the effects of temperature on larval growth and energy accumulation, and calculated a larval energy budget to estimate the extent of potential larval dispersal in this region. Larvae were able to develop through metamorphosis at 16°C, which is much colder than sea surface temperatures during the spawning season in their invasive range, making it unlikely northern range limits are set by a lower temperature limit to larval development. Energy budgets suggest that for larvae produced at the northern end of the invasive range, long distance dispersal to sites far poleward of the current range limit is possible. Similar to the findings of the handful of other studies on cold tolerances of tropical marine invertebrate larvae, larvae should be successful far poleward of current adult distributions.

Members of the sessile rotifer species Cupelopagis vorax are unusual ambush predators that live permanently attached to submerged freshwater plants. Previous light microscopical research has revealed several uncommon features in this species including a stellate-patterned integument and an expansive foregut region called the proventriculus. In this study, we apply transmission electron microscopy to explore the ultrastructure of both the integument and foregut to determine how they differ from other rotifers. Our results reveal that the integument is covered by a thick glycocalyx and is patterned with tubercles that originate from the intracytoplasmic lamina (ICL) within the syncytial epidermis. The ICL forms an apical layer within the syncytium, is electron dense and mostly amorphous, and forms tubercles up to 2.3 µm; these tubercles probably account for the patterned appearance of the integument and are similar to what has been found in other gnesiotrochan rotifers. The basal cytoplasm is highly granular and contains two types of membrane-bound vesicles: large ovoid vesicles (320–411 nm) with amorphous, opaque contents, and secretory bulbs (110–264 nm) with electron-lucent cores and occasionally electron-dense contents. Only the secretory bulbs were observed to form connections to the apical plasmalemma, and so are probably exocytotic. Internally, the proventriculus is a large distensible sack that connects the anterior pharyngeal tube to the posterior mastax. The proventricular epithelium is a thin syncytium mostly covered with a dense glycocalyx and a strong brush border of microvilli underlain by a thin terminal web. The cytoplasm contains few organelles and there is no evidence that it is either secretory or has features (e.g., ICL) that might aid in maceration. We hypothesize that the thick glycocalyx might serve a protective function against the movements of live prey and/or against enzymes released from the rotifer's gastric glands that become regurgitated during feeding.

Clonal propagation is an important life history trait for many sessile organisms, and often leads to the formation of monoclonal aggregations. In the marine environment, sea anemones have been model species for testing theory regarding the evolution of sex and understanding the contribution of sexual versus asexual reproduction to the population structure in facultatively clonal animals. However, little attention has been paid to tropical actiniarians. The corkscrew anemone Bartholomea annulata is common in tropical marine habitats in the western Atlantic and Caribbean; it forms small aggregations (2–4 anemones) on coral reefs and larger aggregations (>10 anemones) in mangrove habitats. We used field surveys and molecular analyses to investigate patterns of distribution, abundance, and genetic structure of aggregations formed by B. annulata on a reef in the US Virgin Islands and in a unique mangrove habitat in the Florida Keys. Abundance was greatest at the abandoned rock quarry mangrove habitat in the Florida Keys, where anemones formed continuously distributed aggregations carpeting the exposed limestone walls. Genetic diversity assessed via intersimple sequence repeats (ISSRs) and six microsatellite loci revealed that asexual reproduction plays only a minor role in the formation of both small and large anemone aggregations. Specifically, ISSR analyses showed that only ∼10% of anemone aggregations were clonal in the US Virgin Islands, while microsatellite genotyping identified clonality in only 1 of 35 aggregations. In the Florida Keys, only four clonal genotypes were recovered within aggregations, but eight clones, representing 33% of the total surveyed population, had individuals in multiple aggregations. Thus, population structure of B. annulata appears to rely primarily on sexual reproduction, although asexual reproduction may play a nontrivial role in some environments. Mechanisms that drive the formation of genotypically diverse aggregations remain unknown, but may include attraction toward conspecifics, shared use of preferred habitats, or the local retention of larvae in partially enclosed habitats.

Animals have evolved diverse mechanisms to protect themselves from predators. Although such defenses are typically generated endogenously, some species have evolved the ability to acquire defenses by sequestering defensive chemicals or structures from other species. Chemical sequestration is widespread among animals, but the ability to sequester entire structures, such as organelles, appears to be rare. Here, we review information on the sequestration of functional nematocysts, the stinging organelles produced by Cnidaria, by divergent predators. Nematocyst sequestration has evolved multiple times, having been documented in Ctenophora, Acoelomorpha, Platyhelminthes, and Mollusca. For each of these phyla, we review the phylogenetic distribution, mechanisms, and possible functions of nematocyst sequestration. We estimate that nematocyst sequestration has evolved 9–17 times across these four phyla. Although data on the mechanism of sequestration remain limited, similarities across several groups are evident. For example, in multiple groups, nematocysts are transported within cells from the gut to peripheral tissues, and certain types of nematocysts are selectively sequestered over others, suggesting convergent evolution in some aspects of the sequestration process across phyla. Similarly, although the function of nematocyst sequestration has not been well documented, several studies do suggest that the nematocysts sequestered by these groups are effective for defense. We highlight several traits that are common to Ctenophora, Acoelomorpha, Platyhelminthes, and Mollusca and suggest hypotheses for how these traits could have played a role in the evolution of nematocyst sequestration. Finally, we propose a generalized working model for the steps that may lead to the evolution of nematocyst sequestration and discuss important areas for future research.

Brooding has been reported in at least 57 species of sea anemone. More than three quarters (44/57) of the species that are known to brood have been described since the last comprehensive treatment of brooding in this lineage. Different authors focusing on different taxonomic groups within sea anemones over the last 115 years have collectively produced an imprecise and inconsistent set of terminology with respect to brooding in general and to the variety of conditions of brooding in particular. In this review, I characterize brooding as a behavior in which offspring are retained by the adult to at least the juvenile stage, in contrast with the more common release of eggs, embryos, or larvae. Brooding occurs in two primary modes, internal and external, in which offspring may be produced via sexual or asexual means. I categorize structures associated with external brooding in three types: pits, chambers, and grooves. Early inferences that external brooding has a primarily bipolar distribution continue to be supported with current data, but it is doubtful that small size and simultaneous hermaphroditism are correlated with brooding in sea anemones. Finally, I identify open questions about brooding in sea anemones and suggest future lines of research that will broaden our understanding of this phenomenon.
