Termite individuals of Gnathamitermes perplexus (Banks, 1920) (Blattodea: Isoptera: Termitidae) were found inside nests of the harvester ant Pogonomyrmex rugosus Emery, 1895 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Myrmicinae) in three ecoregions of Durango, Mexico. The termites and ants were collected in June 2022, July, October and November 2023. This finding suggests that termites are associated with the nests of harvester ants in their natural state. The record of G. perplexus represents the first one in Durango.

Se encontraron individuos de la termita Gnathamitermes perplexus (Banks, 1920) (Blattodea: Isoptera: Termitidae) dentro de nidos de la hormiga cosechadora Pogonomyrmex rugosus Emery, 1895 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Myrmicinae) en tres ecorregiones de Durango, México. Las termitas y hormigas fueron recolectadas en junio 2022, julio, octubre y noviembre 2023. Este hallazgo sugiere que las termitas están asociadas a los nidos de hormigas cosechadoras en su estado natural. El registro de G. perplexus es el primer registro en Durango.

The sweetpotato whitefly Bemisa tabaci (Gennadius) and the greenhouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) are considered as species of economic importance of crops worldwide. These species primarily cause damage to plants through the transmission of Begomovirus in the case of B. tabaci and Crinivirus in the case of T. vaporariorum. In addition, both species overcome control efforts due to the rapid development of resistance to insecticides because of their short life cycles and high fertility. The identification of these species is the key to developing and implementing strategies for their efficient management. This necessitates considering their biological and ecological attributes, particularly their ability to transmit viruses and acquire resistance to insecticides. The objective of this study was to identify the species of Bemisia and Trialeurodes and their distribution in Mexican agroecosystems, as well as to analyze the genetic structure of the species B. tabaci and T. vaporariorum based on their partial sequences of the mtCOI gene by Bayesian inference. According to the results, the presence of B. tabaci MEAM1 was confirmed in crops in northern and central Mexico, B. tabaci NW1 in central and southern Mexico, T. vaporariorum in northern and central Mexico, as well as the presence of Trialeurodes abutilonea (Haldeman) in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) in northern Mexico and the species B. tabaci MED. The phylogenetic reconstruction obtained for the species complex of B. tabaci and T. vaporariorum in populations of Mexico, and their comparison with other populations of the B. tabaci MEAM1, B. tabaci NW, B. tabaci MED and T. vaporariorum identified in countries on the continents of America, Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia enabled the definiition of their evolutionary relationships. These results could optimize the management of these whitefly species in agroecosystems in Mexico, considering their differences in habits, hosts, virus transmission and insecticide resistance.

La mosca blanca del camote, Bemisa tabaci (Gennadius) y la mosca blanca de los invernaderos Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood), están consideradas como especies de importancia económica de cultivos en todo el mundo. Estas especies causan daño a las plantas, principalmente por la transmisión de Begomovirus en el caso de B. tabaci y Crinivirus en el caso de T. vaporariorum. Además, ambas especies poseen la capacidad de desarrollar resistencia de forma rápida a los insecticidas debido a su ciclo de vida corto y fecundidad alta, lo cual dificulta su control. La identificación de las especies es clave para desarrollar e implementar estrategias para su manejo eficiente, considerando sus atributos biológicos y ecológicos, particularmente su habilidad para la transmisión de virus y adquisición de resistencia a insecticidas. Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo identificar molecularmente las especies de Bemisia y Trialeurodes, determinar su distribución en agroecosistemas de México, así como analizar la estructura genética de las especies B. tabaci y T. vaporariorum, con base en sus secuencias del gen mtCOI mediante inferencia bayesiana. Se identificó a B. tabaci MEAM1 (Middle East-Asia Minor 1, antes biotipo B) en agroecosistemas del norte y centro de México, B. tabaci NW1 (New World 1, antes biotipo A) en el centro y sur, T. vaporariorum en el norte y centro, así como a la mosca blanca de alas con franjas Trialeurodes abutilonea (Haldeman) en tomate (Solanum lycopersicum L.) en el norte de México. Bemisia tabaci MED (Mediterranean, antes biotipo Q) no se encontró en las muestras colectadas. La reconstrucción filogenética para B. tabaci MEAM1, B. tabaci NW1 y T. vaporariorum en poblaciones de México, y su comparación con otras poblaciones de B. tabaci MEAM1, B. tabaci NW1, B. tabaci MED y T. vaporariorum identificadas en países de América, Asia, África, Europa y Australia, permitió definir sus relaciones evolutivas. Estos resultados podrían optimizar el manejo de estas especies de moscas blancas en agroecosistemas de México, considerando sus diferencias en hábitos, hospedantes, transmisión de virus y resistencia a insecticidas.

Rodents can harbor ectoparasites that are associated with zoonotic pathogens. This work focused on the identification of ectoparasites associated with rodents. Between August 2019 and March 2020, 25 houses in Mérida were visited to capture synanthropic rodents. In December 2019, wild rodents were also captured in a cornfield. A total of 73 synanthropic rodents were captured, including Rattus rattus L. (n = 49) and Mus musculus L. (n = 24), and 13 wild rodents: Heteromys gaumeri J. A. Allen & Chapman (n = 9) and Ototylomys phyllotis Merriam (n = 4). In Mérida, 28% (21/73) of the rodents were parasitized; 90% were R. rattus, while in the wild area, the most commonly captured species was H. gaumeri with 100% parasitism. A total of 798 hematophagous ectoparasites were obtained, including the mites Echinolaelaps echidninus (Berlese) (n = 8), Ornithonyssus bacoti (Hirst) (n = 3), Steptolaelaps heteromys Furman (n = 305), and 249 mites of the family Listrophoridae. Additional species obtained included the ticks Ixodes affinis Neumann (n = 4), Amblyomma sp. (n = 1), the lice Polyplax spinulosa (Burmeister) (n = 170), the psocids Liposcelis bostrychophila Badonnel (n = 2), the lice Fahrenholzia sp. (n = 51), and the fleas Polygenis sp. (n = 5). The tropical mite O. bacoti represents a new record in Yucatán, and the tick I. affinis represents two new hosts (H. gaumeri and O. phyllotis).

Los roedores pueden albergar ectoparásitos asociados con patógenos zoonóticos. El presente trabajo se enfocó en la identificación de ectoparásitos asociados con roedores. Entre agosto de 2019 y marzo de 2020 se visitaron 25 casas de Mérida para capturar roedores sinantrópicos. En diciembre de 2019, también se capturaron roedores silvestres en un maizal. Se capturaron 73 roedores sinantrópicos: Rattus rattus L. (n= 49) y Mus musculus L. (n= 24), y 13 roedores silvestres: Heteromys gaumeri J. A. Allen & Chapman (n= 9), y Ototylomys phyllotis Merriam (n= 4). En Mérida, 28% (21/73) de los roedores estuvieron parasitados, 90% fue R. rattus, mientras que en el área silvestre la especie más capturada fue H. gaumeri con 100% de parasitismo. Se obtuvieron 798 ectoparásitos hematófagos que incluyen a los ácaros: Echinolaelaps echidninus (Berlese) (n= 8), Ornithonyssus bacoti (Hirst) (n= 3), Steptolaelaps heteromys Furman (n= 305), y 249 ácaros de la familia Listrophoridae. También se obtuvieron garrapatas Ixodes affinis Neumann (n= 4), Amblyomma sp. (n= 1), piojos Polyplax spinulosa (Burmeister) (n= 170), psócidos Liposcelis bostrychophila Badonnel (n= 2), piojos Fahrenholzia sp. (n= 51), y pulgas Polygenis sp. (n= 5). El ácaro tropical O. bacoti representa un nuevo registro en Yucatán, y la garrapata I. affinis en dos nuevos hospederos (H. gaumeri y O. phyllotis).

Three species of the Carabidae family are reported for the first time for the state of Hidalgo, Mexico: Chlaenius (Agostenus) caeruleicollis Chaudoir, 1876, Xenodromius brachinoides Mateu, 1976, Microlestes halffteri Mateu, 1974, and the first formal record of a species of the subfamily Languriinae, Acropteroxys gracilis (Newman, 1838).

Se reportan por primera vez para el estado de Hidalgo, México tres especies de la familia Carabidae, Chlaenius (Agostenus) caeruleicollis Chaudoir, 1876, Xenodromius brachinoides Mateu, 1976 Microlestes halffteri Mateu, 1974, y el primero registro formal de una especie de la subfamilia Languriinae, Acropteroxys gracilis (Newman, 1838).

Ants were sampled in the nest of Pogonomyrmex rugosus in the state of Durango, México, in 2023, in four ecosystems: North American Deserts (DAN), Semiarid Southern Elevations (ESM), Warm-Dry Forests (SCS) and Temperate Sierras (ST). The most abundant species in these ecosystems was Pogonomyrmex rugosus. To determine the morphometry in each ecosystem and its relationship with environmental factors, 15 measurements were made (in mm) of the ant's body: head (4), mesosoma (4), legs (3), gaster (2), eyes (1), and antenna scape (1). In addition, the temperature, precipitation, radiation, elevation, and soil pH were obtained in each of the sites sampled. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was carried out on each measurement, and a correlation between the morphometric and environmental variables was obtained. It was observed that the head and gaster are larger in ESM and smaller in ST, while the eyes are larger in SCS and smaller in DAN. In addition, correlations were found between temperature with middle legs and scape, and elevation with mesosoma length.

Se realizaron muestreos en nidos de Pogonomyrmex rugosus en Durango México en 2023 en cuatro ecosistemas: Desiertos de América del Norte (DAN), Elevaciones Semiáridas Meridionales (ESM), Selvas Cálido-Secas (SCS), y Sierras Templadas (ST) siendo P. rugosus la especie más abundantes en estos ecosistemas. Con el objeto de conocer la morfometría en cada ecosistema y su relación con factores ambientales, se realizaron quince mediciones (en mm) del cuerpo de la hormiga: cabeza (4), mesosoma (4), patas (3), gáster (2), ojos (1), y escapo de la antena (1). Se obtuvo la temperatura, precipitación, radiación, elevación y pH del suelo, en cada uno de los sitios. Se observó que la cabeza y gaster son más grandes en ESM y más pequeños en ST, los ojos son más grandes en SCS y más pequeños en DAN. Además, se encontraron correlaciones entre la temperatura con las patas medias y el escapo, y entre la elevación y el largo del mesosoma.

During February and March 2019, damage was observed on the fruit of fig (Ficus carica L.) in backyard orchards in Veracruz, Mexico, caused by Zaprionus indianus. This is a new record for Z. indianus on figs in Veracruz.

Durante febrero y marzo de 2019, se observaron daños en frutos de higo (Ficus carica L.) en huertos de traspatio en Veracruz, México causados por Zaprionus indianus. Este es un nuevo registro de Z. indianus en higos en Veracruz.

Spodoptera latifascia (Walker) can damage up to 31% of tomato plants under greenhouse conditions in Oaxaca, Mexico. The larvae prefer to feed on the leaves, although the fruits are also damaged. Applications of cypermethrin 200 at 300 ml/ha control the larvae. This is the first report of S. latifascia in Oaxaca.

Carrion beetles from the corpse of a neotropical otter from Jalisco, Mexico are described, including Creophilus maxillosus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Satphylinidae), Saprinus sp. 1, Saprinus sp. 2 (Histeridae) and Necrobia rufipes (Fabricius, 1781) (Cleridae). These beetles are usually recognized as part of the necrocolous (associated with carrion) assemblages of beetles around the world.

Se registran los escarabajos carroñeros colectados de un cadáver de una nutria en Jalisco, México: Creophilus maxillosus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Satphylinidae), Saprinus sp. 1, Saprinus sp. 2 (Histeridae) y, Necrobia rufipes (Fabricius, 1781) (Cleridae), mismos que se conocen como parte de los ensamblajes de coleópteros necrocolos (asociados a la carroña) en diferentes partes del mundo.

The goal of this study was to contribute to the knowledge of termites present in urban areas and avocado orchards and identify the species that causes the most damage in the study sites of Huehuetlán El Grande, Puebla, Mexico. Direct and indirect capture methods with cardboard traps were used to collect insects from May 2021 to February 2022. Four species and a morphospecies of termites were identified, and they corresponded to Incisitermes marginipennis Latreille, I. minor Hagen, Heterotermes convexinotatus Snyder, Reticulitermes flavipes Kollar, and Tenuirostritermes sp. This research increased the records of species of termites in Puebla to eight, including four new records for the state. Additionally, H. convexinotatus was reported to cause severe damage to buildings.

Con el objetivo de contribuir al conocimiento de las termitas presentes en zonas urbanas y huertos de aguacate y conocer la especie que más daño ocasiona en los sitios de estudio del municipio de Huehuetlán El Grande, Puebla, se colectaron organismos durante los meses de mayo del 2021 a febrero del 2022 mediante captura directa e indirecta con trampas de cartón. Se determinaron cuatro especies y una morfoespecie correspondientes a Incisitermes marginipennis Latreille, Incisitermes minor Hagen, Heterotermes convexinotatus Snyder, Reticulitermes flavipes Kollar y Tenuirostritermes sp. Hare, aumentando los registros para Puebla a ocho, incluyendo cuatro registros nuevos para el estado, además, se reporta a la especie H. convexinotatus causando daños severos en construcciones.

The agaves are attacked by the agave weevil (Scyphophorus acupunctatus Ghynlled) (Coleoptera: Dryophthoridae), which can cause losses of up to 46% of production. In the State of Mexico, there are no records of studies on the spatial distribution of this insect pest, which is why the objective of this research was to determineits spatial distribution through spatial analysis by distance indexes (SADIE), the presence of the weevil was recorded in all sampling months, the spatial distribution was aggregated for all samplings, in addition, infestation maps of the insect pest were made, its spatial and temporal stability was determined in the short term and the infested surface area was calculated.

Los agaves son atacados por el picudo del agave (Scyphophorus acupunctatus Ghynlled) (Coleoptera: Dryophthoridae) el cual puede llegar a ocasionar pérdidas de 46% de la producción. En el Estado de México no se tienen registros de estudios sobre su distribución espacial de esta plaga, es por ello que el objetivo de la presente investigación fue determinar mediante el análisis espacial por índices de distancia (SADIE) su distribución espacial. Se registró la presencia del picudo en todos los meses de muestreo, la distribución espacial fue de tipo agregada para todos los muestreos, además se realizaron mapas de infestación de S. acupunctatus , se determinó su estabilidad espacial y temporal a corto plazo y se calculó la superficie infestada.

En Sinaloa el chile Capsicum annum (Linneo) es afectado por el picudo del chile Anthonomus eugenii (Cano), plaga que daña a los frutos, por lo que es necesario su control usando insecticidas. Se realizó un bioensayo para evaluar el índice de repelencia de extractos de Nicotiana glauca (Graham) obtenidos mediante Soxhlet y maceración contra adultos de A. eugenii. Para determinar el efecto repelente, los extractos se aplicaron sobre pedazos de chile a 5 y 10 mg/ml. Se realizó un tamizaje fitoquímico cualitativo a los extractos para detectar el tipo de metabolitos tóxicos. El extracto de N. glauca a 10 mg/ml mostró un índice de repelencia muy alto 0.07 (p =0.05) contra el picudo del chile, por lo que puede ser útil para usarlo en barreras físicas fuera del cultivo para evitar a esta plaga.

Pepper Capsicum annum (Linnaeus) crops in Sinaloa, Mexico, are affected by the pepper weevil Anthonomus eugenii (Cano), a pest that damages the fruits. Thus, insecticides are necessary for its control. A bioassay was carried out to evaluate the repellency index of extracts of Nicotiana glauca (Graham) obtained by Soxhlet and maceration against the adults of A. eugenii. The repellent effect was determined by applying 5 and 10 mg/ml of the extracts to pieces of pepper. The extract was qualitatively screened for its phytochemicals to determine what type of toxic metabolites it produces. The N. glauca extract at 10 mg/ml had a very high repellency index of 0.07 (p=0.05) against the pepper weevil. Thus, it can be used in a physical barriers outside the crop to avoid this pest.

This study was carried out to determine the species of leaf miner that attacks the foliage of spearmint Mentha spicata L. in ornamental plants. During the months of March to May 2023, spearmint foliage was collected in the gardens of private homes in the City of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, México. The specimens were identified based on their external morphology, and the aedeagus of the male. Calycomyza hyptidis Spencer (Diptera: Agromyzidae) was identified. The characteristic damage caused by the insect on the mint leaf and figures of the male's genitalia are shown. On a global scale, this is the first formal record of C. hyptidis L. attacking spearmint M. spicata.

Calycomyza hyptidis Spencer,1966 (Diptera: Agromyzidae) se obtuvo de hierbabuena (Mentha spicata L.), en Los Mochis, Sinaloa, México. Se muestra el daño característico que ocasiona el insecto en la hoja de hierbabuena y figuras de la genitalia del macho. Este es el primer registro formal de C. hyptidis L., atacando M. spicata.

The sorghum aphid Melanaphis sorghi Theobald (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is the main pest of sorghum, Sorghum bicolor L. Moench (Poaceae), in Mexico. New alternatives to control this insect are currently being explored, such as plant extracts and technical grade molecules. We evaluated the effects of three fatty acids (cis-10-heptadecenoic, palmitoleic and docosanoic) and two alkanes (pentadecane and octadecane) in vitro against apterous adults of M. sorghi. The results showed that palmitoleic acid caused the highest mortality rates (<72% at LC₅₀= 2,003 ppm), followed by docosanoic acid (<66% at LC50= 2,389 ppm) at 5,000 ppm after 72 h, while the control with a commercial insecticide (Confial^®, imidacloprid) achieved 100% control at 24 hours. Therefore, due to the high reproduction rate of aphids, the technical insecticides used in this research represent an effective option to control M. sorghi.

El áfido del sorgo, Melanaphis sorghi Theobald (Hemiptera: Aphididae), es la principal plaga del sorgo, Sorghum bicolor L. Moench (Poaceae), en México. Actualmente se están explorando nuevas alternativas para el control de este insecto, como extractos de plantas y moléculas de grado técnico. Evaluamos tres ácidos grasos (ácido cis-10-heptadecenoico, ácido palmítico y ácido docosanoico) y dos alcanos (pentadecano y octadecano) in vitro contra adultos ápteros de M. sorghi. Los resultados mostraron que el ácido palmítico presentó las tasas de mortalidad más altas (<72% con LC₅₀= 2,003 ppm), seguido por el ácido docosanoico (<66% con LC₅₀= 2,389 ppm) a 5,000 ppm después de 72 horas, mientras que el control con un insecticida comercial (Confial^®, imidacloprid) logró 100% de control a las 24 horas. Por lo tanto, debido a la alta tasa de reproducción de los áfidos, los insecticidas técnicos utilizados en esta investigación representan una opción efectiva para el control de M. sorghi.

Sorghum aphid (Melanaphis sorghi; SA) (Theobald) is a new invasive pest of sorghum first reported in the USA in 2013. Since then, the use of synthetic pesticides and resistant cultivars have increased, which has caused levels of differences in the populations of SAs and led to the potential emergence of new biotype(s) of SA. However, most research has concentrated on comparing SA fed on sorghum, sugarcane, and other hosts, which may have obscured any population differences that may exist within sorghum. To understand this, we collected three populations of SA that fed on sorghum from three different locations around the Rio Grande Valley, Texas. We examined possible variations in their life history traits, feeding behavior through an electrical penetration graph (EPG) and host plant defenses post-infestation of SA by growing them on sorghum-sudangrass. The results from the life history traits showed significant differences in the net reproductive rate and intrinsic rate of increase among the three populations of SA tested. However, no significant difference in feeding behavior was observed from the EPG. We also found that the epicuticular wax varied significantly on sorghum-sudangrass when fed on by the three SA populations, while the total activity of polyphenol oxidase did not. Altogether, we show that the population level differences of SA translated into variation in specific traits, but further research is merited to fully understand the presence of SA biotype(s).

El pulgón de sorgo (PS; Melanaphis sorghi Theobald) es una nueva plaga invasora en sorgo, reportada por primera vez en los Estados Unidos en 2013. Desde entonces el uso de agentes químicos y plaguicidas en sorgo ha aumentado, causando diferencias a nivel de las poblaciones del PS, y apuntando al posible surgimiento de nuevos biotipos. La mayoría de las investigaciones con el PS se han enfocado en las comparaciones entre el daño causado al sorgo, caña de azúcar, y otras plantas huéspedes, lo cual puede no haber detectado las diferencias que pudieran existir entre las poblaciones del PS en sorgo. Para discernir estos biotipos, recolectamos tres poblaciones del PS -con sorgo como planta huésped- en tres diferentes sitios en el Valle del Río Grande al sur de Texas, Estados Unidos. Examinamos las posibles variaciones en sus características de vida, su comportamiento alimenticio usando electrical penetration graphs (gráficas de penetración eléctricas, GPE), y defensas de las plantas huésped (sorgo-sudangrass) después de la infección del PS. Nuestros resultados sobre las características de vida mostraron diferencias significativas en la tasa de reproducción entre las tres poblaciones del PS examinadas. Sin embargo, no hubo diferencias significativas en el comportamiento alimenticio del PS usando GPE. También encontramos que la cantidad de cera epicuticular del sorgo-sudangrass varió significativamente con la infección del PS, mientras que la cantidad de polifenol oxidasa no varió. En conclusión demostramos que las diferencias a nivel de las poblaciones del PS se traducen en variaciones de características específicas en la interacción plantainsecto, pero una investigación más extensa se requiere para entender completamente la presencia de biotipos del PS.

An economically important pest of maize (Zea mays L.), the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) injures ear, leaf, and tassel tissue, thus, threatening the livelihood of producers. It is a recent invasive pest in countries in Africa, Asia, and Oceania, and new control strategies are needed to reduce the damage that occurs in these areas. Integrated pest management systems are strengthened by breeding maize for multi-trait host plant resistance. The objective of this study was to evaluate four experimental lines that were derived from two maize genotypes that were previously shown to vary in response to the injuries to the leaves due to fall armyworm. In 2023 and 2024, genotypes were grown in Iowa and Mississippi, infested with fall armyworm, and the degree of leaf injury was recorded after 14 days. The experimental line BS39:76-F₃ had lower scores than the source genotype, BS39, from which it was derived. It did not differ from the resistant checks at both locations in 2023 and had significantly lower scores in Mississippi in 2024. BS39:76-F₃ may provide useful levels of resistance for geneticists that are breeding maize for resistance to the feeding of fall armyworms on leaves. The experimental lines GEMN-0095:0201-F₄ and GEMN-0095:0202-F₄ varied in their responses to leaf injuries with moderate to susceptible scores at both locations in 2023 and Mississippi 2024, and resistant scores (2.3 and 3.2) that did not differ from those of the resistant checks in Iowa 2024. Understanding the abiotic and biotic factors that produce this variability in response could lead to identifying mechanisms that confer resistance in these and possibly other resistant genotypes of maize.

Spodoptera frugiperda (gusano cogollero, J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) es una plaga económicamente importante del maíz (Zea mays L.), porque daña el tejido de la planta, la mazorca, y la espiga, afectando el sustento de los productores. Spodoptera frugiperda es una plaga invasora reciente en países de África, Asia y Oceanía y se necesitan nuevas estrategias de control para reducir el daño que produce. Los sistemas de manejo integrado de plagas se fortalecen mediante el mejoramiento del maíz para lograr su resistencia de plantas con múltiples rasgos. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar cuatro líneas experimentales derivadas de dos genotipos de maíz que previamente demostraron variabilidad en su respuesta al daño foliar del gusano cogollero. En 2023 y 2024, se cultivaron genotipos en Iowa y Mississippi, infestados con gusano cogollero y se evaluaron las lesiones en las hojas después de 14 días. La línea experimental BS39:76-F₃ tuvo puntuaciones más bajas que el genotipo fuente, BS39, del cual se derivó y no fue diferente de los controles resistentes en ambas ubicaciones en 2023 y tuvo daños significativamente más bajos en Mississippi en 2024. BS39:76-F₃ puede proporcionar niveles útiles de resistencia para los fitomejoradores que están mejorando el maíz para darle resistencia al daño del gusano cogollero. We evaluated the effect of three methods of control for thrips using different insecticides in mango trees in San Marcos, Guerrero. Spinosad, azadirachtin and cinnamon extract had less effect on the fruit and caused < 1% damage in the Ataulfo cultivar compared to the treatment with a mixture of malathion and chlorpyrifos ethyl + permethrin. Azadirachtin and cinnamon extract showed the best efficacy to control the thrips in the Ataulfo and Manila cultivars during the first period of flowering. It is recommended to apply azadirachtin and cinnamon extract at the beginning of flowering in this region to control the populations of thrips to minimize harm to the environment or the growers.

Se evaluó el efecto de tres métodos de control de trips utilizando diferentes insecticidas en árboles de mango en San Marcos, Guerrero. Spinosad, azadiractina y extracto de canela redujeron el daño en frutos con menos del 1% de daño causado por trips en mangos variedad Ataulfo, en comparación con el tratamiento de malatión + clorpirifos etil + permetrina. Azadiractina y el extracto de canela mostraron la mayor eficacia para el control de trips en los cultivares Ataulfo y Manila en la primera floración. Se recomienda aplicar azadiractina y extracto de canela al inicio de la floración en esta región para controlar las poblaciones de trips, y minimizar el daño al medio ambiente o a los productores.

We provide an inventory of the fruit beetles from San Sebastian del Oeste, Jalisco, Mexico. Specimens were collected in four types of vegetation, including pine forest, oak forest, cloud forest and tropical subdeciduous forest. Eight species of Cetoniinae that are members of five genera were collected. The highest abundance was found in September in the pine forest. Gymnetis bajula wollastoni is recorded for the first time from Jalisco. All the specimens of Cotinis mutabilis have the “atrata” pattern, which is characterized by their uniform black dorsal color.

Se realizó un inventario de los escarabajos fruteros en San Sebastián del Oeste, Jalisco, México. Los especímenes se colectaron en cuatro tipos de vegetación: bosque de pino, bosque de encino, bosque mesófilo, y bosque tropical subcaducifolio. La mayor abundancia se encontró en septiembre en el bosque de pino. Se registra por primera vez para Jalisco a Gymnetis bajula wollastoni. Todos los especímenes de Cotinis mutabilis pertenecen al patrón de coloración “atrata” el cual se caracteriza por ser uniformemente negro en vista dorsal.

Herbivory by defoliating insects affects physiological processes, and it is laborious to quantify using millimeter paper. However, this process is facilitated by digital image analysis (DIA), whose automation is necessary for greater simplicity and repeatability. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the precision and efficiency of automated DIA to measure herbivory in soybean (Glycine max L.) leaflets caused by the cabbage looper Trichoplusia ni Hübner and bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) leaflets caused by the beet armyworm Spodoptera exigua Hübner. The leaflets were digitized with a desktop scanner and measured for their extent of herbivory, dimensions and shape with a Digimizer, LaminaBatch and Macf-IJ, a routine implemented in ImageJ. Resolutions of 100, 200 and 300 pixels per inch (ppi) were compared on the images of the bean leaflets. Thresholds of 115, 135 and 155 were evaluated in the LaminaBatch. The herbivory in the soybean leaflets was measured with Macf-IJ, LaminaBatch and BioLeaf and also estimated visually by six evaluators with and without the use of the Obermeyer scale. Resolutions of 100, 200, and 300 ppi were effective to obtain the dimensions of leaflets from the images and determine the dimensions and amount of defoliation in the bean leaflets, although the efficiency was inversely higher as the resolution increased. Macf-IJ, LaminaBatch with a threshold of 155 and Digimizer were effective at measuring the leaf area and loss of tissue in the soybean and bean leaflets. Macf-IJ was more efficient at measuring the amount of herbivory and the dimensions of the leaflets. The evaluators overestimated the amount of leaf loss in the soybean leaflets, and the use of the Obermeyer scale increased the accuracy. The use of Bioleaf, LaminaBatch, and Macf-IJ make it easy to accurately and precisely measure the amount of herbivory on scanned images.

La herbivoría por insectos defoliadores afecta procesos fisiológicos y su cuantificación mediante papel milimétrico es laboriosa, lo que se facilita mediante el análisis de imágenes digitales (AID), cuya automatización es necesaria para una mayor simplicidad y repetibilidad. El objetivo fue determinar la precisión y eficiencia del ADI automatizado para medir la herbivoría en folíolos de soja (Glycine max L.) por gusano falso medidor Trichoplusia ni Hübner y frijol (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) por gusano soldado Spodoptera exigua Hübner. Los folíolos se digitalizaron con un escáner de escritorio y se midió la herbivoría, dimensiones y forma con Digimizer, LaminaBatch y Macf-IJ, una rutina implementada en ImageJ. To know the diversity of Scolytinae and Platypodinae in the avocado-producing area of Nayarit, 40 bottle traps baited with ethanol were placed in four study sites in the municipalities of Xalisco and Tepic, Nayarit. The traps were reviewed monthly for 12 months (2017-2018). A total of 5,071 specimens of the Scolytinae and 3 of Platypodinae were collected; the region with the greatest abundance was the producing area of Cofradía de Chocolón, municipality of Xalisco, followed by El Aguacate, in Tepic country, followed by Camichín de Jauja and Emiliano Zapata. Twenty-four species of Scolytinae and one of Platypodinae are recorded for the first time to Nayarit state.

Para conocer la diversidad de Scolytinae y Platypodinae en la zona productora de aguacate de Nayarit, se colocaron 40 trampas de botella cebadas con etanol en cuatro sitios de estudio en los municipios de Xalisco y Tepic, Nayarit. Las trampas se revisaron mensualmente durante 12 meses (2017-2018). Se recolectaron 5,071 ejemplares de Scolytinae y 3 de Platypodinae; la región con mayor abundancia fue la zona productora de Cofradía de Chocolón, municipio de Xalisco, seguida de El Aguacate, en el municipio de Tepic, seguida de Camichín de Jauja y Emiliano Zapata. Se registran por primera vez para el estado de Nayarit 24 especies de Scolytinae y una de Platypodinae.

The Great Plains region is experiencing a biome-level conversion as grasslands are being rapidly encroached by eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana L.; ERC) which, in turn, causes abiotic and biotic changes throughout the region. These changes brought about by ERC encroachment are providing habitat for ticks and mosquitoes that increase the risk for vector-borne diseases. This study evaluated the influence of ERC on the abundance of ticks at the tree level by matching CO2 traps under individual ERC trees with traps in nearby grass patches at seven sites across central and western Oklahoma. From 3,654 ticks collected, significantly more adult and nymphal Amblyomma americanum (L.) and adult Dermacentor variabilis (Say) were collected under the individual ERC trees compared to the adjacent grass patches. Along with growing evidence that larger-scale ERC encroachment increases the abundance of ticks, this finding suggests that even single ERC trees within an encroached area provide sufficient habitat for A. americanum and D. variabilis. This study also contributes novel information about the fine-scale effects of this invasive encroaching tree species on the ecology of vector-borne disease systems.

La región de las Grandes Llanuras está experimentando una conversión a nivel de bioma a medida que los pastizales están siendo invadidos rápidamente por el cedro rojo oriental (Juniperus virginiana L.;CRO), lo que, a su vez, provoca cambios abióticos y bióticos en toda la región. A ‘limited’ statewide field survey was conducted during 2020 to provide updated documentation of the diversity and distribution of ants across Oklahoma. Oklahoma State University Extension educators and local volunteers that included 4-H members cooperated in this effort to collect ants. Cylindrical plastic bait tubes that contained raisins, chocolate chip cookie fragments and Frito^® corn chips were used to attract and capture several species of ants. Data from an ongoing collaborative program between the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry and the Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Service educators to track the locations of Solenopsis invicta were combined with the 2020 survey to provide a more comprehensive overall map of the distribution of ants. For the combined survey, ants were collected from 46 of the 77 counties in Oklahoma. For the 2020 survey, 522 ant bait tubes were placed at 498 locations, and they captured ants from 36 counties. Of 545 ants collected during 2020, 36% were Monomorium minimum, 16% Solenopsis spp. and 15% Pheidole spp. The remaining 33% comprised several additional species. A new record for Solenopsis invicta was collected from Noble County, which validated that the red imported fire ant continues to spread northward in Oklahoma.

Durante 2020 se llevó a cabo una encuesta de campo ‘limitada’ a nivel estatal para proporcionar documentación actualizada sobre la diversidad y distribución de hormigas en Oklahoma. Los educadores del Servicio de Extensión de la Universidad Estatal de Oklahoma y los voluntarios locales, incluidos los miembros de 4-H, cooperaron en este esfuerzo de recolección de hormigas. The new species Phyllophaga (Phytalus) tezoatlana n. sp. is described in this study. Specimens were collected in Oaxaca, southeastern Mexico. This new species belongs to the pruinosa species group within the subgenus Phytalus Erichson. Phyllophaga tezoatlana n. sp. can be distinguished by the following combination of characters: a pronotum and elytra covered with short, erect setae; lateral margins of the pronotum crenulated; the second protarsomere without a subapical finger-like projection; an external metatarsal spur that is short, curved, and located between the metatarsal apex and the internal spur; and the unique morphology of the female genital plates.

En el presente trabajo, se describe una especie nueva del género Phyllophaga Harris: Phyllophaga tezoatlana n. sp. Los especímenes de esta especie fueron recolectados en el estado de Oaxaca, al sur de México. Esta nueva especie pertenece al grupo de especies pruinosa, subgénero Phytalus Erichson. Phyllophaga tezoatlana n. sp. se puede reconocer de las restantes especies por la siguiente combinación de caracteres: pronoto y élitros cubiertos por sedas cortas y erectas, márgenes laterals del pronoto crenulados, segundo protarsómero sin una proyección subapical digitiforme, espuela metatarsal externa corta, curva, localizada entre el ápice de la metatibia y la espuela interna; y por la morfología de las placas genitales femeninas.

The composition of Scolytinae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) that emerged from fig (Ficus carica L., Moraceae) wood was obtained from three commercial orchards in Ayala, Morelos, Mexico. Wood samples were collected bimonthly (from trees and soil) (92 kg in total) to obtain the adults as they emerged. The beetles that emerged (22,075) were classified into two tribes (Scolytini and Hylesini), four genera and eight species. The most diverse genera were Hypothenemus and Xyleborus, with three species each. Phloeotribus opimus Wood was the species that was the most prevalent and dominant and had the highest number of specimens per kilogram of wood. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the emergence of Hypothenemus crudiae (Panzer), H. rotundicollis (Eichhoff), Pycnarthrum hispidum Ferrari, X. ferrugineus (Eichhoff), X. affinis F., and X. volvulus F. from fig wood. Continuous infestation by bark beetles accelerates the aging of plantations and increase the possibility of the transmission of pathogens.

Se determinó la composición específica de escolitínos (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) en tres huertas comerciales de higo (Ficus carica L., Moraceae) en Ayala, Morelos, México. En cada huerta se recolectaron muestras de madera (directamente del árbol y del suelo) de forma bimestral (92 kg en total) y se esperó a la emergencia de adultos. Se colectaron 22,075 especímenes clasificados en dos tribus (Scolytini e Hylesini), cuatro géneros y ocho especies. Los géneros más diversos fueron Hypothenemus y Xyleborus, con 3 especies. Phloeotribus opimus Wood fue la especie con mayor prevalencia, dominancia y número de ejemplares por kilogramo de madera colectada. Por vez primera se registra al higo como hospedera de H. crudiae (Panzer), H. rotundicollis (Eichhoff), Pycnarthrum hispidum Ferrari, X. ferrugineus (Eichhoff), X. affinis F. y X. volvulus F. Infestaciones continuas de escolitínos aceleran el envejecimiento de las plantaciones e incrementan la posibilidad de transmisión de patógenos.

We describe a new species of oak gall wasp, Andricus mazahua García-Martinón & Pujade-Villar n. sp., that is found in Mexico and known only from its asexual generation inducing galls on the twigs of Quercus crassipes Humb. & Bonpl. (section Lobatae). The diagnosis, distribution, and data on the biology of the new species are provided, and its distinctive characters are also illustrated to revise the previous records of A. bonanseai.

Se describe de México una nueva especie de cinípido de encino, Andricus mazahua García-Martinón & Pujade-Villar n. sp., conocida solo a partir de su generación asexual que induce agallas en las ramas de Quercus crassipes Humb. & Bonpl., (section Lobatae). Se incluyen datos referentes a la diagnosis, distribución y su biología de esta nueva especie. Se ilustran los caracteres distintivos es esta nueva especie y se discuten las citas precedentes de A. bonanseai.

The survival and weight of Tenebrio molitor fed diets of wheat bran (WB), wheat semolina (WS), white sorghum (WSR), oats (OA) and commercial wheat flour (CWF) were determined. The feed conversion efficiency in the larvae was determined for 8 weeks. The larvae were killed at the eighth stage by five methods to determine their sanitary quality. The composition of protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber and ash were calculated on the larvae fed the five diets. The costs of production were estimated according to the weight gained by the larvae, the feed consumed and cost of the raw materials. The results showed that although there was no significant difference between the diets with respect to the survival, there was a difference in the weight of the larvae. The feed conversion efficiency was significantly higher with WB. The killing methods showed a significant reduction in the number of coliforms following bleaching for 1 min at 94 °C and with oxidative electrolyzed water. The larvae fed WB had higher contents of protein (50.3%) and ash (5.1%), as well as a lower content of fat (30.3%). These results suggest that the T. molitor larvae were more efficiently produced with the WB diet, and it was the least expensive at 1.9 USD per kg to produce the larvae. The data obtained in this work contribute to research for the use of insects for food.

Se determinó la supervivencia y el peso de larvas de Tenebrio molitor alimentadas con dietas a base de salvado de trigo (ST), sémola (SMT), sorgo blanco (SB), avena (AV) y harina de trigo comercial (HTC). Se determinó la eficiencia de conversión alimentaria de las larvas durante ocho semanas, y al octavo instar, las larvas se sacrificaron para determinar su calidad sanitaria. Adicionalmente, se determinó la composición de proteína, grasa, carbohidratos, fibra y ceniza de las larvas alimentadas con cada dieta. Se estimaron los costos de producción de acuerdo con el peso ganado por las larvas, alimento consumido y costo de la materia prima. Los resultados mostraron que no existió diferencia significativa entre dietas con respecto a la supervivencia, aunque si hubo con el peso de las larvas. La eficiencia de conversión alimentaria fue significativamente mayor con ST. Se logró una reducción total de coliformes al blanquear las larvas por 1 min a 94 °C, y también cuando las larvas se sumergieron por 10 min en agua electrolizada oxidativa. Las larvas alimentadas con ST presentaron un mayor contenido de proteínas (50.3%) y cenizas (5.1%), además de menor contenido de grasa (30.3%). Es posible que la producción de larvas de T. molitor sea más eficiente con la dieta ST. Además, que resultó la de menor costo, US $ 1.9 por Kg de dieta. Los datos que se obtuvieron en este trabajo contribuyen a la investigación la producción de larvas de T. molitor bajo dietas con materias primas de bajo costo y con bajo riesgo microbiológico.

Cattle fever ticks (CFT) represent a significant economic burden to the livestock industry worldwide, and novel methods are needed for treatment of CFT on livestock and wildlife. Two similar botanical pesticides, Stop the Bites^®! and Arkion^® Fly and Tick Spray, were evaluated in a pen trial to control CFT on cattle using a motion activated 3-D Quik Hand^™ livestock sprayer. The cattle were repeatedly treated passively as they crossed through the sprayer to travel between compartments of the pen to access food and water/shade. Both formulations of the botanical pesticides caused significant mortality to CFT when compared to the untreated water control. The 3-D Quik Hand^™ sprayer is a novel tool for the low-volume and high-frequency application of pesticides to control CFT. This tool could provide a new option in addition to treatment using dipping vats, spray boxes, or truck mounted sprayers for use by the Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program and livestock producers. It may also be useful to treat nilgai antelope and white-tailed deer infested with CFT as they move through gaps in livestock fencing or natural or man-made funnels that lead to water or other lures. Further research is warranted to optimize the rates of the botanical pesticides and methods to deploy the 3-D Quik Hand™ sprayer in the field.

Las garrapatas de la fiebre del ganado (GFG) representan una carga económica importante para la industria ganadera en todo el mundo y se necesitan nuevas metodologías de tratamiento para su control. Dos pesticidas botánicos similares: Stop the Bites^®, y Arkion^® Fly and Tick Spray se evaluaron en un ensayo en corral para el control de las GFG en ganado vacuno utilizando el rociador 3-D Quik Hand™ activado por movimiento. El ganado fue tratado pasivamente repetidamente mientras cruzaba el rociador al moverse entre los compartimentos del corral y acceder a la comida y agua y sombra. Ambas formulaciones de los pesticidas botánicos causaron una mortalidad significativa de las GFG en comparación con el control de agua sin pesticida. El pulverizador 3-D Quik Hand™ es una herramienta novedosa para la aplicación de pesticidas con alta frecuencia y bajo volumen de aplicación para el control de las GFG. Veracruz has had outbreaks of vector-borne infectious diseases, including malaria, yellow fever, dengue, and others. This state contains 61.3% of the mosquito richness in Mexico. The Los Tuxtlas region is characterized by remarkable plant and animal diversity, and it is the northernmost Neotropical rainforest on the American continent. There have been relatively few ecological and faunal studies on mosquitoes of the family Culicidae. The impact of human activities in ecosystems can have an impact on the presence of vector-borne diseases. This study was conducted to determine the composition of species and diversity of the mosquitoes in Los Tuxtlas by sampling during the cold, dry and rainy seasons in 2010 and 2011. We collected 31 species, which represent 91.17 % and 96.8% of the expected species according to the ACE and Chao 1 indices, respectively. Pipiapan Hill was the site with the highest richness (15 species), while the site with highest abundance was Coastal Hill (CH) (n=768). The rainy season was the season with the highest richness and abundance (21 species; 623 mosquitoes). Overall, there were strong differences among the sites. The lowest degree of similarity was between the (CH) and urban zone sites (60%). We captured 10 medically important species that have the potential to transmit diseases at the three sites. Our findings contribute to the understanding of the diversity of mosquitoes that inhabit sites that are geographically close to each other but differ in their environmental conditions. This information is intended to support surveillance programs for mosquito species of medical and veterinary importance.

El estado de Veracruz, ha presentado brotes de enfermedades infecciosas transmitidas por vectores como malaria, fiebre amarilla, dengue, entre otras. Veracruz registra el 61.3% de la riqueza de mosquitos en México, sin embargo, la región de Los Tuxtlas se caracteriza por una notable diversidad vegetal y animal, siendo la selva neotropical más septentrional del continente americano. Además, los estudios ecológicos y faunísticos sobre mosquitos de la familia Culicidae son pocos en comparación con el impacto de las actividades humanas que generan cambios en los ecosistemas, que podrían incidir en la presencia de enfermedades transmitidas por vectores. Se realizó un estudio para conocer la composición de especies y la diversidad de mosquitos en la región de Los Tuxtlas, muestreando en la época fría, seca y lluviosa durante los años 2010 y 2011. Nuestros resultados muestran que se capturaron 31 especies; la curva de acumulación de especies con los índices ACE y Chao 1 estiman que se obtuvo 91.17 % y 96.8 %. El sitio con mayor riqueza fue el Cerro Pipiapan (PH) (15 spp), mientras que la mayor abundancia se presentó en el Cerro Costero (CH) (n=768). La época de lluvias presentó la mayor riqueza y abundancia (21 spp; 623 individuos). En general, existe una gran disimilitud entre los sitios, siendo la menor entre los sitios (CH) y la zona urbana (UZ) (60%). Finalmente, en los tres sitios se capturaron 10 especies de mosquitos con importancia médica, que tienen el potencial de convertirse en vectores de enfermedades. Nuestros hallazgos contribuyen al entendimiento de la diversidad de mosquitos que habitan sitios cercanos, pero con diferentes condiciones ambientales. Esta información tiene como objetivo apoyar los programas de vigilancia de especies de mosquitos de importancia médica y veterinaria.

For the management of the whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood 1856, extracts were obtained from the aerial part of the basil plant Ocimum basilicum L. 1753, which was in the vegetative development stage, the extraction of secondary compounds was carried out with solvents. organic compounds such as methanol, ethanol, dichloromethane and hexane, to determine their repellent effect on whitefly adults, under laboratory conditions with the cylinder method. Seven concentrations were used per extract and two controls: a synthetic insecticide (Endosulfan 360CE) and water. Crude basil extracts produced 64 to 99% repellency of whitefly adults. Basil extracts obtained with methanol, ethanol, and hexane, at concentrations 0.1 and 1.0% demonstrated grater repellency than endosulfan. The crude basil extract in dichloromethane reached 88 % repellency of whitefly adults, which is considered to be more effective.

Para el manejo de la mosca blanca Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood 1856, se obtuvieron extractos de la parte aérea de la planta de albahaca Ocimum basilicum L. 1753, que se encontraba en la etapa de desarrollo vegetativo. La extracción de los compuestos secundarios se realizó con los solventes metanol, etanol, diclorometano y hexano, para determinar su efecto repelente en adultos de mosca blanca, en condiciones de laboratorio con el método del cilindro. Se utilizaron siete concentraciones por extracto y dos testigos: Endosulfan 360^CE, y agua. Los extractos crudos de albahaca causaron 64 a 99% de repelencia de adultos de mosca blanca. Los extractos de albahaca obtenidos con metanol, etanol, y hexano, a las concentraciones 0.1 y 1.0 % causaron mayor repelencia que endosulfan. El extracto crudo de albahaca en diclorometano alcanzó 88 % de repelencia de adultos de mosca blanca, el cual se considera de mayor efectividad.

The diversity of scolytine species and their spatio-temporal distribution were evaluated in three coffee plantations in Chiapas through monthly monitoring and the application of diversity indices. A total of 3,229 scolytines were collected, which represented 74 species and 30 genera; 25 species are new records for Chiapas, and three are new for Mexico: Amphycranus macellus Wood, Corthylus rubricollis Blandford, and Cryptocarenus laevigatus Blandford. The most abundant species were Premnobius cavipennis Eichhoff (14.68%), Corthylus flagellifer Blandford (14.03%), Hypothenemus seriatus Eichhoff (8.3%), and Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari (7.28%). Population abundance peaks were observed from October to January, which corresponded to the fall and winter seasons, respectively.

Se evaluó la diversidad de especies de escolitinos y su distribución espacio-temporal en tres plantaciones de café en Chiapas, mediante monitoreos mensuales y la aplicación de índices de diversidad. Se recolectaron 3,229 escolitinos, pertenecientes a 74 especies y 30 géneros; 25 especies representan nuevos registros para Chiapas y tres para México: Amphycranus macellus Wood, Corthylus rubricollis Blandford y Cryptocarenus laevigatus Blandford. Las especies más abundantes fueron Premnobius cavipennis Eichhoff (14.68 %), Corthylus flagellifer Blandford (14.03 %), Hypothenemus seriatus Eichhoff (8.3 %) y Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari (7.28 %). Los picos de mayor abundancia poblacional se observaron entre los meses de octubre y enero, en las estaciones de otoño e invierno.

Damage by the sugarcane borer complex (SCBC) in sugarcane in Morelos, Mexico, was evaluated from the tillering stage to the production of stems ready for milling. The variety Lt 96-9 was significantly more infested at the end of the production stage than the varieties ITV92-1424 CP 72-2086. The SCBC infested more sugarcane in the municipality of Tlaquiltenango than in Amacuzac. One-year-old canes were infested more frequently and intensively than four-year-old ones. At the tillering stage, there was no significant difference in relation to the infestation with respect to the variety, cycle and location of the crop. The presence of the borer complex in the three varieties of sugarcane affected the "grinding stems," and the most commonly infested variety was LT 96-9. The damage from SCBC was more intense in the municipality of Tlaquiltenango, and these pests preferred one-year crops.

Se evaluó el daño ocasionado por el complejo de barrenadores de la caña de azúcar (CBCA) en este cultivo en Morelos, México, desde la etapa de macollamiento hasta la de producción de tallos listos para la molienda. La variedad Lt 96-9 fue significativamente más infestada al final de la etapa de producción que las variedades ITV92-1424 CP 72-2086. En el municipio de Tlaquiltenango hubo mayor infestación por el CBCA que el municipio de Amacuzac. La caña de un año fue más infestada y con mayor intensidad que la de cuatro años. En la etapa de macollamiento, no hubo diferencia significativa en relación con la infestación con respecto a la variedad, el ciclo y la ubicación del cultivo. Se concluye que la presencia del complejo de barrenadores en las tres variedades de caña de azúcar afecta principalmente y en mayor grado en la etapa de “tallos molederos”. La variedad más infestada fue la LT 96-9, el municipio de Tlaquiltenango fue el más infestado, y las plagas no tuvieron preferencia por cultivos de un año.

The diversity of lady beetles (Coccinellidae) encompasses 6,000 species worldwide. Beyond their extensive morphological and biological variation, these beetles are considered beneficial organisms due to their predatory behavior. However, this family has not received adequate attention and has been insufficiently sampled in certain regions of the Mexican tropics, such as the Yucatan Peninsula. In this study, biweekly sampling was carried out between July 2021 and July 2022 in 25 polyculture sweet orange orchards to assess the diversity of lady beetles with the potential as biological control agents against citrus pests. A total of 4,559 adults were collected, which represented 38 species. However, 13 were only identified at the genus level. A total of 13 species were newly documented for Yucatan, and two previously unknown species are first records for Mexico. These findings underscore how imperative it is to investigate the diversity of coccinellids in Mexico, particularly in tropical regions.

La diversidad de coccinélidos es de 6,000 especies en todo el mundo. Además de su amplia diversidad morfológica y biológica, son considerados organismos benéficos por sus hábitos depredadores. Sin embargo, ésta familia no ha recibido la atención adecuada y han sido sub-muestreados en regiones del trópico mexicano como la Península de Yucatán. En este estudio se realizaron muestreos quincenales entre julio de 2021 y julio de 2022, en 25 huertas de naranja dulce en policultivo, con el fin de conocer la diversidad de las catarinas que tienen potencial como controladores biológicos de plagas en cítricos. Se colectaron 4,559 adultos pertenecientes a 38 especies, de las cuales 13 fueron identificadas únicamente hasta género. Se agregaron 13 especies a las anteriormente reportadas para Yucatán, y se agregaron dos nuevos registros para México. Los resultados sugieren que la diversidad de coccinélidos en México se debe seguir explorando, sobre todo en las regiones tropicales.
